Listening skill is one of the vital skill during the process of constructing and building meaning, responding to spoken or non-verbal messages. A good listening skill contributes a big aspect in the field of developing a language that consists of speaking and reading. On the other hand, a successful listening varies from different types of advantages taken by the learners of the language during the process of listening being carried on. The learning surrounding plays a crucial role in developing types of listening such as conversations, simple instructions, basic interviews and also discussion in the sub field of spoken discourse. Moreover, spoken discourse is used in daily life through technology resources like internet. The learning surrounding …show more content…
There are two important advantages of comprehension model towards the listening skill. First, it relates to our experience and exposure we have gone through. Comprehension model gives a good exposure by target language to natural samples meanwhile experience enables to build a message logically. Then, the next importance of comprehension model is where long-term listening should be enhanced. As we all know, it allow students to pass their exams. However, the comprehension model has its own weakness towards teaching listening skill. The raw material will be different and readers would face difficulties by assuming that listening is more demanding compared to reading skill. In brief, teaching lessons should be enhanced than they carry out in future in order to make listening understandable and valuable. Then, information in texts is permanent as information about listening is always updated time being to time so the permanent texts stay and this may lead to confusion among the …show more content…
This process called meaning building is emphasized on how it is used in decoding process to make inferences, gathering information and understanding derived meaning. It is shown that teachers could approach the learners better regarding listening skill through this process in the classroom. This approach clearly demonstrates on how listening skills lessons should be carried out in higher level educational programmes, lesson plans and classroom activities. Meaning building process is carried out for the learners to build good scale in decoding messages using their knowledge that they have acquired which is known as prior knowledge. The meaning building process enables a learner to improve their understanding towards speaker’s message. However, meaning building process is different and unusual compared to the decoding process. It is different because the meaning building is mostly upon a person’s prior knowledge and experience. In brief, a listener should put much effort in order to decode the sound signals and message so that they would be able to carry out the meaning building process. Hence, the listener has to play their role attentively by paying more attention on decoding words in order to fill in the gaps and have a better understanding of what is being spoken by interpreting information using prior
Comprehension is the purpose of reading. Comprehension is the process of constructing meaning from a given text and applying that to the students background knowledge.
As indicated by Ziegler and Goswami (2005), reading is the process of understanding and making sense of speech or written down thoughts. The initial goal of reading is to gain access to the meaning of sentences. To achieve reading student must learn the letters used by their society for representing speech or thoughts as series of visual symbols and they also found that the critical characteristic to develop reading depends on phonological consciousness. Ziegler and Goswami (2005) focused on the psycholinguistic grain size theory, reading acquisition and...
Bercow (2008) refers to the importance of communication as central to all learning. Cherry discusses this further referring to the significance of hearing and listening with regards to the development of language and literacy. The EYFS (EE,2012) reiterates this placing ‘Listening and Attention’ as a subsection within the ‘prime area’ ‘Communication and Language’.
A vital aspect of interpersonal communication is the style in which one listens. While every individual possesses their own preferred method of listening in communication, it can be enlightening to analyze our own strengths and weaknesses so as to maximize effectual communication. Within the confines of four main listening style categories, I have chosen those which best describe my own personal listening style.
The article, written by Kimberly Tohill, discusses about the rise in popularity of podcasts and how they could be implicated in the classrooms to help students in the process of learning another language. Tohill talks about how learning a new language as people getting older becomes harder than when they were children. The reason being children are more exposed to the language while growing up through parents whose native language was not English. For students who attempt to learn another language as adolescents or older, one of their exposures to learning is through the classroom environment.
Primary schools that introduce language learning at an earlier phase may do so for a number of purposes, but it is because of the benefits of learning a language at a younger age that this paper has chosen Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) as its target scheme of work. For the purpose of this assignment the focus language will be French (but the strategies to be discussed will apply to any MFL). The ideas within the scheme of work will be critically discussed as part of university experience, school practice and relevant research.
They may have difficulties or problems using language such as speaking, listening and understanding. This essay will discuss the situations of individuals
The stages of language knowledge develop by stages, and it is suggested, each successive stage approach more approximates the grammar of the adult usage.
How do children acquire language? What are the processes of language acquisition? How do infants respond to speech? Language acquisition is the process of learning a native or a second language. Although how children learn to speak is not perfectly understood, most explanations involve both the observations that children copy what they hear and the inference that human beings have a natural aptitude for understanding grammar. Children usually learn the sounds and vocabulary of their native language through imitation, (which helps them learn to pronounce words correctly), and grammar is seldom taught to them, but instead that they rapidly acquire the ability to speak grammatically. Though, not all children learn by imitation alone. Children will produce forms of language that adults never say. For example, “I spilled milk on hisself” or “Debbie wants a cookie”. This demonstrates that children have the desire to speak correctly and have self-motivating traits to communicate. This supports the theory of Noam Chomsky (1972)-that children are able to learn grammar of a particular language because all intelligible languages are founded on a deep structure of universal grammatical rules that corresponds to an innate capacity of the human brain. Adults learning a second language pass through some of the same stages, as do children learning their native language. In the first part of this paper I will describe the process of language acquisition. The second part will review how infants respond to speech.

Children’s acquisition of language has long been considered one of the uniquely defining characteristics of human behaviour.
A skill, according the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, is a learned power of doing something competently: a developed aptitude or ability. The skill of listening is a skill that I believe everyone should have but most people lack. Many people do not realize that listening is not merely the act of hearing a sound but of paying close attention to what someone is saying and trying to understand the message that they are trying to relate to you. Most times people say they are listening when in all actuality they are merely hearing you but not even attempting to understand what is being spoken of. The advantages of being a good listener are vast. This skill can positively affect many parts of our everyday life and interaction with people. Nevertheless, it is a skilled that is overlooked in today’s unmindful society. The reason I believe that listening is of such importance is because nowadays people have developed the mentality of “every man for himself.” People are not concerned about their fellows anymore. We are only concerned about our own issues and problems. Listening is a skill that is acquired throughout a lifetime. It is an important virtue when it comes to communication.People should be taught from childhood the importance of learning how to listen. If we realized how much we would benefit from being good listeners, I believe that things would change. Lack of listening skills affects marriages, parents and children, teachers and students, employers and employees, foreign affairs, and the list goes on.
Language learning is no longer limited in the certain classroom. Students could learn the language at any time and any places. For instance, students can memorize vocabulary when they are waiting for the bus to come, they can finish their online homework before their practice begins, and they can also review what they learn today before going to sleep just simply by taking out their phones. Mobile assisted language learning enables students to save “the time fragment” to learn a foreign language, instead of only learning in the classroom during a certain time of the day. Moreover, by using mobile assisted language learning, speaking, listening become more accessible to students. In a traditional classroom, language learning focuses more on vocabulary and grammar, which means students can practice reading and writing a lot, but they do not proactive enough listening and speaking. However, in the real world, speaking and listening are much more important than reading and writing, because people need to use language to communicate with each other. With mobile assisted language learning, it would be easy to practice speaking and listening even if there is no teacher around. Since the majority of mobile devices are internet based, there are plenty of listening and speaking resources online to help students experience the authentic language environment. Those could include news radio, movies, music, chatting room, and language education websites. Mobile devices provide students with a more interactive environment to practice their language skills. However, in traditional foreign language class, the teacher cannot make sure they help every student to learn speaking and listening, since those skills require individual communication, and it is almost impossible for teachers to actually talk to every student on by on all the
Speaking is a natural ability given to most reluctant individuals. Since the beginning of time, it has been assumed that we have a right to speak and use words, thus we naturally begin our development of language during the early stages of live. After years of grasping and perfecting our vocabulary and language, it seems unnecessary to study the purpose of our development. Why, then, should we study “oral communication?” There are many purposes, benefits, and institutions that branch from oral communication. Of course, communication is the basis of interaction with other individuals through the use of expressions and words; however, through studying oral communication, one can take the words and expressions being used and apply them to his or her own life. After all, the most effective and useful knowledge is applied knowledge.
One of the main aspects in communicating is listening. An effective listener is one who, not only comprehends how the speaker feels but, also understands what they are stating. Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas. Listeners should avoid being judgmental. The individual does not have to agree with the ideas, values or opinions of the speaker; however, to fully understand them, one must put aside their criticism. Speakers will believe that they can trust the listeners with their information when they know that they will not be judged. Miscommunication happens frequently, listene...
