Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentleman. The term journey can to some extent act as a metaphor. It’s a term that accurately depicts many concepts from all walks of life without becoming ambiguous. It can be represented by utilising the fundamental characteristics of the word ‘journey’ itself as a journey can be representative of a process, physical travel, or any undertaking involving a goal. So what does the term journey mean to you? To me “a journey is not a trip or a vacation but it is rather a process of self-discovery” (Louis Vuitton). This process of self-discovery makes a journey special. It becomes unique and exclusive to only you. I believe that the journeys we encounter play a decisive role in who we become. Writers use this universal theme in literature to evoke certain emotions from their target audience. They are able to do this by creating characters whose journeys we can relate to. Journeys can be classified as emotional, physical and spiritual and are prevalent in literature due to their ability to describe the evolution of a character. Mao’s Last Dancer directed by Bruce Beresford and The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini are texts that use the idea of journey and incorporate it into the characters Li Cunxin and Baba. The journeys of both these contrasting characters have significantly broadened my understanding of the term journey.
