Health informatics is one of the emerging fields in today’s world. In this field, information technology is used in healthcare to improve business. Health informatics systems can improve medical care, reduce duplicate procedures/tasks and automates manual tasks. Electronic health record systems (EHR) comes under Health informatics. EHR systems are real time patient centric information resource for practioners, which represents a major domain of health information technology (HIT). EHR products proved to provide better care for patients by reducing the incidence of medical errors, allowing access to evidence based tools to make decisions about patient care etc. [41]. This system uses role based access control where access to different modules are restricted based on roles. For example, students can be restricted from performing order entry whereas instructors are allowed to see different patient reports like an administrator etc. Moreover, this system uses open source softwares so it can be customized further as per the end user’s requirement. The system is also cloud-based, which means, there is no infrastructure needed, no software installations and also student/instructors can access the systems from anywhere – classroom, library, home etc. This system will be useful for schools who want to introduce academic EHR in curriculum with a limited …show more content…

In 1960s, as clinical care became more complex, providers realized that in certain situations the patient’s complete health history would not be accessible to them. The availability of comprehensive medical information when needed has paved the way for innovation of storing patient’s information electronically. Improvement of patient care was and is the catalyst for the electronic health record (EHR) [3].
An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a digitized version of a patient’s medical history, which is maintained by a clinician/provider over time, and may include all of the key administrative medical data relevant to that person’s care, including demographics, health issues, medications, vital signs, past medical history, immunizations, laboratory data etc. EHR enables access to information and has the ability to streamline the provider’s workflow. It also supports other healthcare-related activities directly or indirectly through various interfaces, including evidence-based decision support and quality management.
