Classical Music: Is it Relevant or Not?
Julia, a teen music lover, on one of her classes, is required to listen to classical music. Upon listening, she concludes that it is too boring for her taste despite being a music lover and thought to herself, “Why do I need to listen to classical music? What is the purpose of classical music? Is it really relevant to our music industry today?” Unbeknownst to her, classical music exists and is studied and performed for a reason.
What is classical music? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, classical music is defined as “serious or conventional music that follow long established principles, more specifically, music written in the European tradition, when forms such as the symphony, concerto, and

It also has its own noble history like the rest of the music types and takes up a large chunk of the history of not just world music, but also world history. One can say that there are other types of music that are a part of history, but, classical music is the basis of them all since it is the foundation of all music. Historians are able to tell a culture of a certain place by their music at that specific period in time. If one studies the history of classical music, one can conclude that music evolves along with the milestones of history. “Romanticism was influenced by humanism. The era focused on finding and expressing human nature and the mystery they felt of creations and emotions” (Little, 2014). An example from our own history is the kundiman. Kundiman is the classic form of Filipino love song—or so it seemed to colonialist forces in the Philippines. In fact, in Kundiman, the singer who expresses undying love for his beloved is actually singing for love of country. Because of it, we were able to sympathize with the history of our …show more content…
Classical music is highly structured, organized and complex. “Classical music may take one melody and wrap, warp, invert, rephrase and re-tempo it all in one take, all at the same time” (Campbell, 2014). As a result, in order to understand a classical piece, one must be equipped with the proper theoretical and analytical skills. Because these are composed by geniuses, music theorists up to this day still continue to study and analyze how these composers wrote their music; how they can accomplish a piece that lasts for more or less an hour or how they can write a piece that requires more than a hundred instrumentalists. Thus, such a feat requires a God-given talent and skill. Another thing is the commonly known “Mozart Effect” that “suggests the improvement on the performance of spatial-temporal reasoning and short-term memory through the listening of complex music, such as Mozart’s two piano concertos” (Maglione, 2006). Also, some say that there are other tools that develop our brain, but it is classical music that lets us think and enjoy music at the same time. All of these suggest that classical music can help us in terms of improving our analytical

As Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Studies shown that classical music, specifically Mozart, help you engage in your studies better and as a result showed high test scores according to a test scientist at Stanford University held. Did you ever imagine how powerful a piece that was composed in the 1780’s could be?

Europe is one of the world's seven continents and is home to twenty-seven countries with many spoken languages. Language is a complex part of music and is why there is a wide-ranging representation of music throughout Europe. According to Terry E. Miller and Andrew Shahriari authors, of “World Music A Global Journey” European music is classified into three categories Classical, Folk, and Popular music. Classical music in Europe refers to art music created during the time of the aristocrats. It’s learned and study in a formal setting which is the opposite of how Folk music is taught. Folk music ...
Music is timeless. Its evolution constitutes part of history and through its creation history is created, as well. Music can be used to trace tendencies all around the world for each period since it has been one of the ways through which the humans have been able to express themselves. Music has also served as the tool to identify certain periods of time, that way, each generation is influenced by the iconic musical styles that prevailed during the previous one. However, the so known classical music, which is comprised by the work of great composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, or Brahms starting from the 11th century to the present day and includes the Classical period and several other, has influenced appreciably the production of popular music nowadays. The song “Karma” by Alicia Keys is a vivid example of this musical custom. In this song, the artist merges samples of Johannes Brahms’s Violin Concerto, Op. 77 to conform a mix of two very different musical styles.
Classical music was best described by Mr. Dan Romano who clearly states that its art speaking from your heart to the heart of others. Bach’s Baroque time period of western music lead to some of the most known and widely recognized organ music, and it was Beethoven’s deafness that came to symbolize a fundamental change in the way we listen to classical music. Beethoven was the most beloved and influential composers of his time. Their music had flaws and that is what made it breathtaking, comfortable and easy to listen to. It is now known that between the lives of Bach and Beethoven we can understand that though their love for composing and classical music was the same in some aspects they were exact opposites in the end when it came to their genre, musical instruments and recognition.
Classical music is known as light and smooth, also it is heavily emphasized on homophonic melodies, meaning that there is a single melody that every instrument plays. Thus, the significant turning point of classical music in humanity’s social and cultural development is that this type of music first heard became very popular in the 18th century. Classical music created energy, rhythm, and harmonic symphony and from these people advanced more and more and made these elements much better. This turning point not just improved classical music, but other music that evolved from classical music. Also, Classical music is known as one of the first music ever in the nation. When people listen to classical music they can identify the soft rhythm and how peaceful it sounds. According to the article Music Genres as Historical Artifacts, “Classical music in general is an important part of the cultural capital that gains access to scarce economic, educational and occupational resources” (Vlegels). It can be shown that just a certain type of music can give so many elements defining music and educational resources as well; which make it a significant turning point in the cultural or social development. People love music that soothes their heart and mind, and that could get their mind off of all the negativity around
Classical music in France started in the medieval times (10th century) and continues to develop now. The types of classical music in France can be broken into six different eras: Middle Ages, Renaissance, baroque, opera, romantic era, and the 20th century. Classical music is associated with secular music, meaning non-religious music. It covers a broad range dating from the 10th century to the present. The major genres are all part of the classical music, whether it be sacred, secular, vocal, or instrumental. As you look into the classical music of France you see that there are different styles within each era. This type of music would start out as one thing, then progress throughout the centuries. Many composers would experiment with different styles to create a separate and unique sound that would be recognized as French music.
Getting it's name from art history, the classic period in music extends from 1740 to 1810 and includes the music of Haydn, Mozart, the first period of Beethoven, and Bach's sons. The classical period of music coordinated harmony, melody, rhythm, and orchestration more effectively then earlier periods of music.
Mozart, Beethoven and Joseph Haydn are considered the three main composers of this time. The Classical Period took place from 1750-1820. During this time, scientific advances changed the world view. People gained faith in the power of reason and began undermining traditional authority. Music and visual arts stress balance and structure. String, woodwind and some keyboard and brass instruments were used in this era. Classical music shows a contrast in mood, both between and within movements. It also shows flexibility in rhythm, by using multiple rhythmic patterns in a piece. Classical music is mostly homophonic, but with frequent shifts. Classical music also has a tuneful, easy to sing melody. Emotions were expressed in shades of dynamics, which was related to the development of piano. In the Classical era, orchestras grew in size (though they’re still smaller than today’s). Instruments worked in four movements: fast (first), slow (second), dance-related (third), and fast (fourth). Public, ticket buying concerts became common and the rise of the music instrument manufacturing industry began. Vienna became a place where musicians came to study and seek recognition. The most common compositional forms during this time were sonatas, concerti, and
The main goal of the very talented English music composer and conductor Benjamin Zander was to convince his audience through his very interesting and inspirational video, “The Transformative Power of Classical Music” that ‘Classical Music is for every one’. He was not only able to keep the attention of his audience growing with his splendid performance but also was able to make them understand the depth of classical music. He chose the most beautiful piece of classical music in order to make sure that his audience love it.
Introduction The world is changing and so is the style of music. Often people who do not have any musical background might think that classical music is boring and only for more mature audiences. In fact, the sales of traditional Western classical music albums are decreasing and many symphony orchestras and operas are struggling to find endowments and audiences. It is considered that classical music today occupies a position similar to that of religion, as a form of art rather than entertainment or just a background noise (Johnson, 2002). Unlike popular music, classical music may be more sophisticated and complex in its form.
Classical music has a big impact in today’s music; modern music is influenced by music from the Classical, Baroque and Romantic eras. Many of today’s modern songs are inspired or even copied from music of this periods, and even when we don’t realized by listening to modern popular songs we are actually listening in some way to music composed by famous composers of the classical periods of music, that’s why I believe that without the creative intellect of famous composers such as Bach, Chopin, Shubert, Beethoven and many others modern music that we know today it would not exist because many songs are a result of the evolution of music, and their fundamental roots come from classical composers.
The Classical Period brought forward new musical innovation. The sudden change in emotion and contrast in the music from the classical era is one of the many fascinating topics. However, the topic most talked about to this very day is Mozart’s Requiem. The mystery of which parts were composed by Mozart puzzles many. Even the rumor that surrounds Mozart’s cause of death is fascinating. Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus, added more controversy to this intriguing mystery.
Listening to music releases dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is known not only for improving mood but also increasing motivation and emotional stamina. But the benefits that come from listening to music affect more than just the way we feel. Studies have shown that when listening to the right style of music at the right decibel level, students have been able to concentrate better. For studying purposes, this mainly applies to classical music. Many school teachers and professors argue that music is simply distracting, or so stimulating that it inhibits a student’s ability to focus. However, when classical music has few words, or as is often found, few English words, the mind isn’t as easily distracted by the meaning or idea of the song. In fact, what is sometimes interpreted as chaotic in classical music can provide a high enough level of exertion for your brain to comprehend, that it stimulates high l...
