Humans have many imperfections, from which we can never be able to escape. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, it depicts a situation where British boys in the 1950s land on a deserted island and have to survive with order and authority. The story diversifies into a dystopian island where there is savagery and chaos. The story uses many symbols to display the imperfections of man and how they control society, such as the beast, the conch, and the masks. These three quotes show that William Golding had a dark view of society and believed that everyone was vile and had many imperfections within themselves. In this quote Simon, one of the main characters, explains how he believes that the beast is really just themselves, and that they are the reason they are falling into savages. This is a very influential moment in the novel, because later Simon is killed by the society because they thought he was the beast. This supports Golding's view on society, because it shows that society is dark and is controlled by human imperfections. The first one to use a mask is Jack, who is the antagonist in the novel, and he is the first to go savage.
