Mobile phones have been in our lives for a little over thirty years now, in that time they have changed our society drastically. When mobile phone technology was being developed, “The world’s first mobile phone call was made on April 3rd, 1973, when Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, called a rival telecommunications company and informed them he was speaking via a mobile phone.” (Goodwin) Ten years later mobile phones went on sale to the public for around 4000 dollars. With a high price these phones had a target consumer of businessmen due to their busy lifestyle and always being on the move away from the office. The first Mobile phones were very different from the phones we have today, they were much larger in size and weighed Dr. Martin Cooper was one of the main developers of this phone and with his help it made it to market after fifteen years. This phone was known as the first of many generations of mobile phones. The second generation is considered to be the phones that come out in the early 1990s. Mobile phones in the early 90s had access to a new mobile network that was all digital. This network was known as the 2G network and was much faster than previous networks that mobile phones used. The mobile phones that used these networks were smaller than the ones in the late 80s, and could even fit in your pocket. Smaller cell phones were made possible by technological advances in battery size and computer chip technology; because of the new portability and more reliable network, mobile phone use increased exponentially. The third generation came shortly after the second due to even more advances in technology. This new generation came with a new network which was called the 3G network. These new phones came with way more features than old generations, some of these included SMS text messaging, internet access, and email. These features have opened up many more uses for today’s cell One could even say we might see Martin Cooper’s first mobile phone in a museum in the near future and look at it as if it were ancient history. But without it we wouldn’t have the cell phones in our pockets, or that pizza you ordered last night with the tap of a finger. Cell phones have undergone many changes sense the start, what was once a large mobile phone the size of a person’s head has turned into something that could fit in someone’s pocket and connect them to the entire world in an instant. Sadly with that we have developed a society that is so engrossed in their phone they can’t even look at the road when they’re driving. Cell phones have also fostered a group of individuals who don’t know how to talk to others because they have only done it a handful of times.
