Jazz’s impact on World War 1
The period of time after World War 1 is known as the roaring 20’s. Throughout this Era many people were negatively impacted by the destruction on countries and people lives. This eventually developed the formation of the Great Depression. Civilians, slaves, and soldiers fighting all experienced a sense of comfort and change to there life when the jazz popularity was on rise. The war began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. Throughout this time period of the war many were killed, wounded, and scarred. The military introduced many new and advanced technologies into World War 1; which lead to unprecedented high levels of destruction and carnage. According to the article, World War 1 was established to us as, “the first modern war.” Many referred to the war as this because, of technologies we associate as military conflict today. Like today, the behavior of the actions that were encountered in the war put many through a phase of sadness, leading up to the great depression. It was very hard on many soldiers to withstand the results from the war and for wives who had to stay strong and help support their husbands returning home. Famous jazz composer and producer wrote carillon for voice to help populate the music and comfort soldiers. Jazz was a type of music that was originated to distract soldiers and help them through the outcomes of the war. Many new technologies were also displayed in the music category which helped many of the soldiers to listen and conduct their own Jazz music. Several soldiers were lost in the making of their own music; but it later on was founded, sung, and heard about while fighting. “Jazz was different, more visceral and raffish, hinting at the prurient origins of the word itself. The normal respectable sound of brass instruments took on a new character.” This music was a way of soothing the mood and calming the soldiers which defeated depression and help ease their mind. As said in the article, many feel they wouldn't have been able to continue without the making of Jazz music.
