When Imogene King developed her Goal Attainment Theory she focused on the relationship between the nurse and the patient. When a patient seeks out health care the relationship between the patient and the nurse will play a crucial role in the patient’s outcome. For health promotion to occur the nurse and the patient must establish goals that are mutually agreed upon. The goals are establish when a positive interaction occurs between the nurse and patient. If the interaction is positive and effective the goals are more likely to be reached. system and the social system. Imogene King’s personal system concept focuses on the nurse. In order for the nurse to establish a strong interaction with the patient the nurse must be confident in the care they will provide to them. Imogene King emphasizes the nurse will effectively interact with the patient if they are knowledgeable, have a strong sense of self, are non-judgmental and are able to use their own life experiences to enhance their understanding or empathy. The interpersonal system is focused on the nurse-patient interaction. This is where the nurse will interact with the patient and establish a relationship. If the nurse has a strong knowledge base and sense of self the nurse will be able to identify the patients coping mechanisms, stressors and identify the goals the patient wants to obtain. The goals to restore the patients health will be established by both the nurse and the patient. The concept of the social system includes the nurse and the patient identifying their roles and boundaries in the relationship. Trust will be established and goals will be identified that will promote the patients’ health.
During my career as a registered nurse I have had the privilege of caring for my patients at the bedside and meeting their needs holistically. The APRN listens and engages with the patient as care and compassion take place. As the nurse discerns what the patient’s needs are and considers obstacles to achieving optimal care the application of theory is necessary as the process is not always quantifiable. The APRN who does not learn nursing theory may focus primarily on EBP and miss this engagement opportunity with the patient. One may prescribe medication; however, if the patient does not take the medication, then the nurse assumes the patient is noncompliant. Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.
Nursing in this theory is described as an art that helps individuals who are in need of health care, and goals are attained threw following a series of steps in a pattern. The nurse and the patient have to work together threw this process to achieve said goals. The Theory of Interpersonal Relations is a process that starts with the roles of the nurse, and those roles began with the nurse as a stranger, teacher, resource person, counselor, surrogate and leader (Nursing Theories, 2012). The theory begins with the role of the stranger, which is defined as the introductory phase and is an environment where about the patient is meeting the nurse and developing a trusting relationship. The nurse as a teacher allows the nurse to provide knowledge and information on a particular interest while the resource person provides specific information to a problem or situation. As counselors the nurses help to make life decisions and provides guidance. The surrogate role acts as an advocate on the patients’ behalf, while the role of the leader has the nurse assuming most of the responsibility to help patients meet treatment
This care includes supporting the people I care for in their journey through life, encompassing their mental, physical and emotional make up. I see this approach as a shared world view between my nursing peers and myself, and other health care professionals. Goals that I encompass in my everyday practice and that I find important to uphold would include providing safe care, high quality care, promoting a safe environment and increasing my personal knowledge base. All these goals will have a positive impact on the patients helping them return to health, improve health promotion or provide comfort care. Another goal is to lead by example, through showing compassion, understanding, empathy and the ability to respect the decisions of others. This paper will provide as an example to how we as nurses can be successful in applying the nursing process and various technological advances to promote the health and well being of our patients. Involved in this process, we must include the following criteria: a understanding of health promotion, a value of health promotion, strategies and content to promote health, involve the patient in the process, address barriers to successful health promotion, and utilize facilitators to health promotion (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
