Regarding one of Shakespeare’s plays, The Tempest, the conflict Illusions vs. Reality becomes a critical part of the story’s development. Illusions are things that we our senses would wrongly interpret. As a part of life, one might think about seeking revenge on someone who has sinned against him, however, in reality we only prove that we are no better than the person who has sinned against us in the matter. Sometimes, our sense of justice can trick our sense of humanity and create a twisted and disastrous state of mind. In the Tempest we learn that Prospero was focused on vengeance upon the king’s group by his sense of justice because of what Alonso, Antonio and Sebastian have wrought upon him and his daughter Miranda. Using his and Ariel’s
illusions he was able play tricks on Alonso’s and even create scenarios with the hope of making the group atone for their sins against Prospero, even Gonzalo, the man who gave Prospero and Miranda vital necessities. The real question is how Prospero could have switched from vengeance to forgiveness for those who relieved him of his dukedom and sent him to sea. In The Tempest we learn that both Ariel and Caliban become slaves of Prospero, after both being rescued from the evil witch Sycorax who previously inhabited the island before Prospero. After he used his magic to defeat the witch, Ariel served Prospero in compensation for his freedom and Caliban being forced into slavery after his mother’s defeat. Theoretically, Ariel and Caliban are being transitioned from one form of slavery to the next. From Sycorax’s imprisonment to Prospero’s enslavement solely because of their wicked sense of justice, which is the illusion that clouds their minds. CONCLUSION In conclusion, Illusions are ultimately what the mind perceives them to be. Sometimes the illusion may be our perception of a human being or even our sense of our own personality, Just as Ferdinand and Miranda were tricked by the illusion of love because of Prospero’s magic potion. In the end, we may not realize the false images that our minds conceive or our eyes’ perception of specific situations or scenarios, but in the end it only comes down to one’s state of mind and style of thinking.

It is possibly a person who does moral good in the world, or perhaps someone who stands up for those who do not have the power to do so themselves. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, but people must remember that they are still human. They do make mistakes and they can be selfish. Such is the case in both Hamlet and Tempest. Both main characters have been slighted in some way and both eventually get their revenge. They are similar and different in the ways that they go about this business. Thus, Hamlet and Prospero shall be discussed in detail to each other and how they performed as the "hero" of the play.

Finally, Macbeth’s ambition blinds him into living a life of delusion, which causes him to reach his peak of arrogance and optimism, resulting in even further detriment and ultimately his very fall. Just as ambitions are incredibly illusive and detrimental in Macbeth, they can also be incredibly illusive and detrimental in our actual, modern day society.

On the surface, he appears to be a benevolent leader doing his best to protect and care for the inhabitants of the island, especially for Miranda. On closer inspection, however, Prospero plays God, controlling and creating each individual to fit the mold he desires.

For instance, Ariel opposes Prospero’s continuous detention of the former regardless of an earlier agreement to the contrary. Moreover, Caliban expresses his dissatisfaction with the forced labor that her does for Prospero. To prove his opposition to Prospero’s authority, Caliban plans the master’s death. Miranda also makes a statement that indicates her displeasure with the way Prospero executes his authority especially with regard to Ferdinand. The imprisoned Ferdinand also indicates his opposition to Prospero’s power through a disproving statement made before Miranda.

Society experiences this, as sometimes someone appears to be your friend, when they are actually working against you. Many people hide their true identities, keeping up an appearance different from their own. Many pieces of literature utilize this theme, and a notable example would be Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Many of the characters appear to be acting in Hamlet’s best interests, but are really plotting against him, and Hamlet himself puts on an appearance of madness, unlike his own sanity.
