When it comes to our identities everyone has a different one offline and online. As in for social media’s everyone expresses themselves differently on their profiles not everything said can be a 100% true but then again it can be. That’s the tricky part about reading into someone online versus face to face. Someone can make themselves seem perfect online; but in reality nothing in their life is how they describe it online. In the articles “Identity Management in Cyberspace” and “Putting Your Best Cyber Face Forward” a few things mentioned caught my attention. I feel as though more and more teens of this generation are using social media in order to seek approval of attention of others. Since they are expected to use social media in a way to create an online audience, they post pictures of themselves and activities so that they can get a “yes” or “no” response from their audience. If someone posts a picture online and someone who is considered a “friend” makes a positive comment on the photo, then they have received approval of their actions. If someone makes a negative remark on the photo, then they have received disapproval. She uses various examples of how young adults use social media to create a persona of themselves, such as when girls post sexualized pictures of themselves and create avatars of themselves (Orenstein, 448). This means that how they are seen online will affect how they act in real life. When Orenstein says that “the self, becomes a brand”, she means that young adults have to act in a way that is perceived to be socially acceptable by their peers, and the image of how everyone sees you. Ever since the dawn of time, people have been communicating with others around them and with today’s technology people can interconnect with people across the globe. People’s second online identity is always on an aggressive defense, paranoid to the point of any wrong thing said or unsaid could lead to a fight, and they tend to only be happy when there is someone to attack. In “Straddling Online and Offline Profiles, Millennials Search for Identity” Rachel Lowry writes to discuss the idea of how millennials are facing an identity crisis, and search for their true self. In an article called “Relationships, community, and Identity in the New Virtual Society” Arnold Brown explains two different identities one that he calls “found identity” and the other “made identity” (34). The found identity is one that is created by one true self, it’s based off your background, your religion, your sex, everything that truly defines who you really are. And then there’s your made identity the one you make for yourself and how you wished to be seen. As technology advances, the easier it will be for young girls to create these made identity’s of out these famous celebrities, having them focus on things that don’t matter instead of valuing who they really are.
When people create different identities, it may be to distort reality. People may create identities to fulfill fantasies or just to impersonate others(in other words, distorting reality). Everyone has done it whether it was from acting in a skit or creating a false photo identification card or just giving someone a fake name. All of those above are different ways of distorting reality and different ways of changing an identity.
A person can have more than one identity to be recognized as but when identity are thought of, people will mostly focus on the external markers of identity; what we can see on our self, physically.
It’s certainly true our habits define us. But how true is this when it comes to our digital habits? Do we act the same online and offline? Back when the internet was nonexistent, it was probably safe to presume that our online behaviors didn’t say much about our real-world personas. But as the internet gained importance in our lives, especially the millennial generation, we gave up the anonymity and the urge to mask our real identity online. In fact, online activities are no longer separated from our real lives, but a fundamental part of it.

Multiple identities have been increased by the creation of cyberspace communications according to "Cyberspace and Identity" by Sherry Turkle. Turkle uses four main points to establish this argument. Her first point is that online identity is a textual construction. Secondly she states that online identity is a consequence-free moratorium. Turkle's third point is online identity expands real identity. Finally, her last point states that online identity illustrates a cultural concept of multiplicity. I disagree with many aspects of her argument and I have found flaws in her argument. Technology is an area that does not stand still and consequently outpaced Turkle's argument.
