In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald published his book, The Great Gatsby. Since then, the popularity of the book continues to grow, is still taught in schools, and has been made into a movie twice. The book takes you through an adventure of a hopeless romantic who throws extravagant parties hoping one day he would discover someone to help him find the girl he has always loved. Gatsby puts his lover, Daisy, on a pedestal and believes she is larger than life. Everything he does to win her over is ideally perfect, but not realistic. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald highlights the concept of Idealism versus Realism throughout the book.
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was very intelligent and had a gift for writing, and his first piece of writing appeared in a school newspaper when he was 13. When he was 15, his parents sent him to Newman school in New Jersey. Later on, he attended Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. He joined their Triangle club and wrote scripts and lyrics for their musicals. He liked to party with his friends and ended up showing signs of an early drinking problem. When he attended a dance his sophomore year of college, he met a 16 year old girl names Jennifer. He was told by her father that, “Poor boys don’t marry rich girls.” ( The Great American Dreamer). He began to fail school so he decided to drop out and join the war and then imagined himself as a war hero. He attended a party while waiting to be sent off to war and met his future wife Zelda Sayre, the daughter of a Supreme Court judge in Alabama. He ended up publishing his first book, This Side of Paradise, and was very successful with it. He and Zelda were at an all-time high in their lif...

...reams and imagination and reality. Fitzgerald did a fantastic job creating this book, especially because there is a little bit of himself and things done in his life that he portrayed in the book. The real reason this is still taught in schools today is because it’s so dynamic. It teaches a lot of lessons and gives insight on what the 1920’s was like to live in. It shows the reader why, “Rich girls don’t marry poor boys.” It shows the reader what it is like to be so obsessed with something or someone that the idea or dream they are creating to be with them can never come true because it is so unrealistic. It all still relates to today’s day and age. For being written in the 1920’s, this book is able to connect with people still today because everyone has that one person they can never be with at one point in their lives. The Great Gatsby is truly a fantastic book.
The message of numerous literature novels are connected to the context of the time and can enlighten readers to understand the meaning. This is true of the novel, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and first published in 1926. It highlights a materialistic and consumerist society where social and moral values were slowly decaying. Portrayed through the eyes of the narrator, Nick Carraway, itillustrated the world , the people surrounding him and their values; starting with Daisy and Tom Buchanan and the infamous Jay Gatsby, a man chasing after his first love.
The Great Gatsby is a well written and exemplary novel of the Jazz age, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald desired writing his books about the roaring twenties and would explain what happened during that time frame. The majority of the characters in The Great Gatsby cared more about money, power, and having a good time then the people in their lives. This lack of caring for others resulted in the hardships the characters faced. Especially, Jay Gatsby was one of these cruel characters.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby was a remarkable book. Fitzgerald Made the characters of the book as real and as personal as possible. Three characteristics stood out in the novel to me. Tom’s Jealousy of Gatsby relationship with his wife, Gatsby’s lies about who he is and his life, and Daisy’s ways to tempt Gatsby to fall in love with her. The novel was inspired by the way he fell in love with his wife Zelda.
The Great Gatsby unravels in death and destruction due to one man’s need, for one girl. His admiration and ambition for this girl shows how the American dream can lead to so much havoc. Even though Gatsby has everything he wants, he still has a want for that girl. Fitzgerald does a wonderful job of expressing that through Gatsby and showing how a pursuit of that dream can lead to so much death and destruction. Fitzgerald shows how that American dream demands more than you have and causes harm to Gatsby and people around him. All the events connected well and tied in beautifully with the plot. It affects more than just himself and he was blind to that due to his passion for the American dream.
F. Scott Fitzgerald is well known for being an excellent writer, for expertly describing the Jazz Age, and for having a drinking problem. However, he is not so well known for creating deep and intriguing characters. In The Great Gatsby, the majority of the characters remain one-dimensional and unchanging throughout the novel. They are simply known from the viewpoint of Nick Carraway, the participating narrator. Some insight is given into characters in the form of their dialogue with Nick, however, they never really become deep characters that are 'known' and can be identified with. While all of the participants in the novel aren't completely flat, most of the main characters are simply stereotypes of 1920's people from the southern, western, and eastern parts of America.

Each of the characters, while part of the same story line, have different priorities and agendas, each character working towards achieving what they think would benefit them the most. As The Great Gatsby’s plot thickens the characters constantly show their discontent of the American Dream that they are living, always expressing their greed for more, three particular offenders of this deadly sin are Tom, Daisy and Gatsby himself. The characters motives stem from a mixture of boredom, a need and longing for the american dream, and simple selfish human desire.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a fictional story of a man, Gatsby, whose idealism personified the American dream. Yet, Gatsby’s world transformed when he lost his god-like power and indifference towards the world to fall in love with Daisy. Gatsby’s poverty and Daisy’s beauty, class, and affluence contrasted their mutual affectionate feelings for one another. As Gatsby had not achieved the American dream of wealth and fame yet, he blended into the crowd and had to lie to his love to earn her affections. This divide was caused by the gap in their class structures. Daisy grew up accustomed to marrying for wealth, status, power, and increased affluence, while Gatsby developed under poverty and only knew love as an intense emotional
“He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it; he did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in the vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.” (Fitzgerald, 180).
