The sound of an ice cream truck can stop time for just a moment, but as soon as the time starts, the flood of children can wipe out an entire ice cream truck with their impatience and eagerness to fill their tummies with delicous ice cream. Especially for one little five year old boy. The little boy’s name was Tommy Jones; he had blond fine short hair with beautiful hazel eyes with fair and soft skin. He never knew that ice cream existed until that one summer. Little Tommy would cry of happiness to anything related to ice cream, but now he cries of sickness to the words ice cream. The day Tommy’s ice cream fever started. It was summer, school was out and chidrens were enjoying the freedom from learning. It was a sunny and hot afternoon, childrens were playing in the park. Imagination were released out of their little souls and adventures were filled in the atmosphere. Among those children there was a little boy named Tommy, playing tag with the other kids on this hot summer day. Beads of sweat were running down his forehead as he ran through the ray of sun. He was running from the little girl in a white sundress that was “It.” Suddenly, the little girl stopped chasing after him as soon as the sound of music was played. Heard by everyone, they paused for a moment. Toys dropped to the ground and everyone ran towards the melody. Except for Tommy, every single child in the park ran like little olympions chasing for the gold cone. Tommy did not understand this strange music and why all the children were running straight into the truck. Frantic and tired Parents also scurried to catch up with their joyfull children with cash and coins grasped in their hand. Tommy’s mom went up to confused Tommy and told him, “Lets go see what is in the... ... middle of paper ... ...faintly smell the vomit in his mouth. He was cleaned up and in his pajamas, laying lifelessly as if the world was going to end. He felt horrible for two whole weeks. The thought, the sight, and the smell of ice cream made Tommy feel sick. Never again did Tommy touch ice cream again. The horror of that day has left a sick impression on ice cream. The music of the ice cream truck, was like the sound of joy and excitement that whispered through the tiny ears of these tiny people. It can stop their world of imagination and adventure that runs through these tiny souls. It was not music to Little Tommy’s ears. Instead of happiness, the reminder of that day filed was burned into his mind. It left Tommy an ice scream stain in his mind. The pain still haunts Tommy when the ice cream is mentioned. Tommy was over loaded by ice cream, which turned into an overload of sickness.
In the short story “Fiesta, 1980” by Junot Diaz, the main character Yunior suffers from car sickness which causes him to vomit all over his father’s newly acquired Volkswagen van. His father is portrayed as cold, argumentative and somewhat abusive not only to him but also the rest of the family. An example of this father’s abuse is seen when the
In Concord, Massachusetts, Eddy Hall, an eighth grader, on his birthday got a new bike. He left it on his front porch through the night. Next morning the bike had vanished, this disappointed Eddy because he knew that his aunt and uncle could not afford to buy another bike. Eddy wanted to find out who did this. While he was at school, his aunt received a box from India. It had an old bike that once Eddy looked at he rejected right away. A couple of days later he decided to look at his bike from his distant uncle. He looked at its speedometer, but it was not one, it was a clock. Then by his characteristic of curiosity, he looks closer on to the clock and finds two dials that say: DAYS and YEARS. He looked at the tag on the bike and he noticed it said “The Time Bike.” Next Eddy shows the theme of the story by trying to take the easy way out and jump finals week so he can graduate 8th grade. Then he finds out that he fails every class, which then makes him go to summer school.
In The “So Called Iced-Cream” by Daniel Barwick and “How Not to Get Into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation” by Alfie Kohn both demonstrate that life is meaningless without having passion for the things you do and things you wish to achieve in life. First of all, from Barwick’s essay Monty Burns has everything in gross excess yet cannot bring joy into his life. For instance, the narrator writes, “How could it be that Mr. Bums is unhappy? He has his own Xanadu, a nuclear power plant that he runs with his iron fist, a chauffeur driven Rolls-Royce, control over the local Republican Party… He was even reunited with his precarious teddy bear, Bobo. What, then, might the problem be? (Barwick, 3) Despite

Together we started making the sounds the trucks make vroom! rumble! zoom! As I read the book I encourage Alejandro by asking him questions that will allow him to think deeper that just naming the objects of the pictures. Why do we need recycle trucks? He responded that we need them for the trash. I evaluated his response and added that it is true that we need recycle trucks for the trash I emphasized the importance of these trucks in keeping the environment clean. If we did not have trucks that pick up the trash there would be trash everywhere. We continued reading the book Alejandro finished my sentences. I kept asking him about the different trucks and their jobs. He then told me about the U-Haul truck and how it is used to move people. He told me that he saw one when his parents were moving to the Bronx two months ago. I also asked him about the pictures and what he saw in their surroundings. He mentioned how all the trucks were connected to a letter in the alphabet. Alejandro also noticed that the letters were written in clear and big bold fonts. When we got to the last page of the book he shouted, “day and night, just watch and
He grew up in this small town and knew he would live there forever. He knew every landmark in this area. This place is where he grew up and experienced many adventures. The new journey of his life was exciting, but then he also had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach of something not right. Three weeks ago John, twenty-four years old, finished his fourth semester of college.
(Attention Getter) Growing up, I would always pay a visit to my every year to Florida during the summer. It was one of those typical hot summer days when out of nowhere the most terrifying incident just happened in front of me. My uncle's son like numerous of others had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes ever since he was born. It was an ordinary sweltering summer day when my uncle’s son (Adam), my other cousin(Jude) and I were playing volleyball at a nearby lake.
The story starts with Eddie, an old man (Eighty years old to be exact) who works at Ruby Pier, a carnival-like amusement park. Eddie has worked there for most all of his life (except when he served in the war), and, even though today is his birthday, he still does everything the same way he would do things any other day. Today would be different though. A thrill ride called Freddy's Free Fall had been stuck with all its passengers at the top of the ride, and it was rather tilted towards the ground. Eddie raced over to tell the man running the ride to get the passengers off and then press the release button. The man did and when he pressed the release button, the cart where the passengers had been fell to the ground. In the midst of all this, Eddie saw a little girl right under the spot where the cart would fall, and, despite his bad leg, he ran over to save the little girl as the cart was falling. All he felt was her little hands and then, pain followed by the feeling of floating.
The small legs that whisked back and forth in the open space of the vehicle were full of energy. The young girl spent the day with the two people she admired the most. A bigger version of herself sat in the passenger seat with her husband driving next to her. They laughed over conversation. Every so often, the girl would stick thin fingers against her mother’s shoulder to receive her attention. She would say something trivial and obvious, but her mother would still entertain her. She absorbed every phrase her daughter said as if each filled her with a tremendous joy and was the greatest thing ever spoken. Her mother had selected a black dress for her today with a large white ribbon tied around her midsection. Her hair had been combed back in two braids so that the tips were touching her shoulder blades. They were coming home late from a Christmas party at church.
As I entered the building which housed the rink, the warm, nostalgic scent of popcorn hit that part of my brain where dusty, cobwebbed memories live, memories of my own adolescence. I made my way past a group of exuberant teenagers at the snack bar until I reached the skating rink. Skinny, hard benches, made for small butts, lined one wall. I took a seat and scanned the rink. My eyes paused to read a sign; white, block letters on a black background warned, "Skate at Your Own Risk."
"The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream," Wallace Steven's writes in his poem "The Emperor of Ice-Cream" (8). This line proclaiming the ice-cream maker as important as an emperor is used metaphorically to describe the selfishness of human nature. One the surface, the poem is about the wake of a poor, old woman. However, if the metaphors and symbols of the poem are examined, the poem's deeper message becomes apparent. The attenders of the wake, who represent human nature, are uninterested in the dead woman; they are only concerned with their own wants - eating ice-cream. Therefore, the "emperor of ice-cream" is truly the mourners' emperor, for the ice-cream maker represents the power of human selfishness, a power present in all humans.
On page 18 of "Attaboy" the author describes the ice milk as ,"vanilla flavor and the color of pus. It had been frozen for so long that I, as a child, was made to feel old." No one can hear an ice cream described like this and not cringe a little. On the next page, when Tommy is eating this pus- colored, frozen treat that was portrayed in such a negative light by the author, it caused me to suffer nausea. I believe that the only true way to tell if the author did a good job of illustrating a gross object is when the reader cringes just by reading about it. Another great example of David Sedaris's vivid details in this story would be on page 13. He depicts a toddler as being "volcanic" and when I read that i just had to laugh. I've never heard
It had been wet and cloudy since that morning--a typical Oregon day--and as I made my way to the back of the bus, the faint smell of rain mingled with the rubbery-plastic smell of hundreds of little rain boots. When I finally got to my seat, I was rather unnerved to find that not only was someone sitting in my seat, but that that someone was none other than Nathaniel Larson, the most obnoxious kid in the 5th grade. I took a deep breath and said, in the kindest voice I could muster, "Nathan, you...
