1890-1938: The early years
IBM was incorporated in the state of New York on June 15, 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company. But its origins can be traced back to 1890, during the height of the Industrial Revolution, when the United States was experiencing waves of immigration. The U.S. Census Bureau knew its traditional methods of counting would not be adequate for measuring the population, so it sponsored a contest to find a more efficient means of tabulating census data.
The winner was Herman Hollerith, a German immigrant and Census Bureau statistician, whose Punch Card Tabulating Machine used an electric current to sense holes in punch cards and keep a running total of data. Capitalizing on his success, Hollerith formed the Tabulating Machine Co. in 1896.
In 1911, Charles R. Flint, a noted trust organizer, engineered the merger of Hollerith's company with two others, Computing Scale Co. of America and International Time Recording Co. The combined Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co., or C-T-R, manufactured and sold machinery ranging from commercial scales and industrial time recorders to meat and cheese slicers and, of course, tabulators and punch cards. Based in New York City, the company had 1,300 employees and offices and plants in Endicott and Binghamton, N.Y.; Dayton, Ohio; Detroit, Mich.; Washington, D.C., and Toronto, Canada.
When the diversified businesses of C-T-R proved difficult to manage, Flint turned for help to the former No. 2 executive at the National Cash Register Co., Thomas J. Watson. In 1914, Watson, age 40, joined the company as general manager.
The son of Scottish immigrants, Watson had been a top salesman at NCR, but left after clashing with its autocratic leader, John Henry Patterson. However, Watson did adopt some of Patterson's more effective business tactics: generous sales incentives, an insistence on well-groomed, dark-suited salesmen and an evangelical fervor for instilling company pride and loyalty in every worker. Watson boosted company spirit with employee sports teams, family outings and a company band. He preached a positive outlook, and his favorite slogan, "THINK," became a mantra for C-T-R's employees.
Watson also stressed the importance of the customer, a lasting IBM tenet. He understood that the success of the client translated into the success of his company, a belief that, years later, manifested itself in the popular adage, "Nobody was ever fired for buying from IBM."
Within 11 months of joining C-T-R, Watson became its president. The company focused on providing large-scale, custom-built tabulating solutions for businesses, leaving the market for small office products to others.
The third reason for the title of Captain of Industry is that he surrounded himself around the right people and using very wise tactics in growing as a worker. As a young worker, he did his best as a citizen to become close with Thomas A. Scott. The two would begin many stock investments which were paying dividends of more than $5,000 a year. He then united companies with George Pullman by making a joint proposition calling their company "The Pullman Palace Car Company.
Mr. Blake took over the position, which was held by Bob Nardelli who was forced to resign his post over the controversy surrounding his lucrative pay package. However, the underlying reason had just as much to do with his handling of the transformation of the company after he took the reins in December 2000 (Azzato, M.). With no previous retail experience, Nardelli's gruff management style is said to have alienated several key top-level managers.

Everyone has a different perception of what really is heaven and hell and where people end up in the after life. Some people are not even religious and have their own personal thoughts about what is next after death. The Inferno or to be more precise “Hell” can be described and defined as a place where people end up after death in the natural world, when people have not followed God’s ways and laws of living. It is has been depicted throughout the years of time that suffering in hell is horrific, gruesome, and unimaginable. In Dante’s Inferno, Dante portrays the protagonist as he is guided by his ghostly friend Virgil the poet through the nine chambers of Hell. The transition from one circle to another is very shocking and graphic at what he witnesses through each circle. Dante uncovers where each sin will lead people to once the sinners souls face death. He faces many trials and tribulations through the beginning to end of the Inferno. Dante felt impelled to write the Inferno because he was going through his own personal struggles at the time. In a way he was extremely depressed because he was exiled out of Florence, and the love of his life Beatrice died. While Dante was in exile for so many years, it allowed him to write some of his most significant works of literature that people still read to this day.

Dante Alighieri's The Inferno is a poem written in first person that tells a story of Dante’s journey through the nine circles of Hell after he strays from the rightful path. Each circle of Hell contains sinners who have committed different sins during their lifetime and are punished based on the severity of their sins. When taking into the beliefs and moral teachings of the Catholic Church into consideration, these punishments seem especially unfair and extreme.
In 1854 there were two systems consisted of 13 separate companies. In 1856 the company was named the “Western Union Telegraph Company”. Soon there were a lot of telegraph companies everywhere. One of the most important take-over was carried out by Sibley when he negotiated the purchase of the Morse patent rights for the Midwest for $50,000 from Jeptha H. Wade and john J. Speed, company (EMTC). Sibly switched to the superior Morse system. He also hired Wade, a very capable manager, who became his protege and later his successor. After a struggle Wade and Morse obtained the EMTC from Cornell in 1855.

In the Inferno, Dante gives his audience the clear view as to what he believes as a Christian follower, that hell has to offer. He shows that worldly sin every single sin has a fair punishment. An example in Dante would be when Cocytus was frozen because he committed the cold crime of fraud. The deeper that Virgil and Dante go into hell, the greater volume of sin is committed. In each level of hell, the criminals are punished equally depending on what their crime was. Dante learns that God's punishment is just and that his power is divine. He sets forth one of the most fully developed Christian understanding of justice on this earth. He describes this justice as what we do as human beings will determine what happens to us when it is our time to go based on Gods judgment. An example of this divine power would be when the Furies will not let Dante and Virgil get past the Gate of Dis.

Without knowing the history of Microsoft, there would be no way of forming an accurate opinion of whether Microsoft should be broken up or not. Microsoft first came into existence in 1975 and was founded by William H. Gates III (Bill Gates) and Paul Allen.
The first part of Divine Comedy, the epic poem by Dante Alighieri, is named Inferno. In general, Inferno is the underworld Hell that is broken up into three major layers; Upper Hell, Lower Hell and the Center of Hell. In this portion of the poem, the author, Dante, recollects and narrates his own trip taken through Hell from beginning to end by means of visualization (Dante).
Computer engineering started about 5,000 years ago in China when they invented the abacus. The abacus is a manual calculator in which you move beads back and forth on rods to add or subtract. Other inventors of simple computers include Blaise Pascal who came up with the arithmetic machine for his father’s work. Also Charles Babbage produced the Analytical Engine, which combined math calculations from one problem and applied it to solve other complex problems. The Analytical Engine is similar to today’s computers.
After graduating from college, Welch found himself working as a chemical engineer at GE in 1960. In 1981, he became the company’s youngest CEO. His approach to his position as a CEO was about creating personal and meaningful relationship. He met with the employees and the customers, talking with them to create a positive atmosphere.
The Divine Comedy is a very interesting story, even though it is fiction one may wonder if hell is something similar of Dante how describes it to be. If one is a Christian one must not only believe that Heaven is a real things, but that Hell is also a real thing that people go to. However, a lot of Christians do not believe that Hell is a real place for them to go to until it is too late. Many people get caught up in the worldly things instead of focusing on the godly things on Earth, however the worldly things will catch up to one if they let it. The worldly things will catch up with them when their time on Earth is done and it is time for them to be judged, however by that time it will be too late. Technology continued to prosper in the computer world into the nineteenth century. A major figure during this time is Charles Babbage, designed the idea of the Difference Engine in the year 1820. It was a calculating machine designed to tabulate the results of mathematical functions (Evans, 38). Babbage, however, never completed this invention because he came up with a newer creation in which he named the Analytical Engine. This computer was expected to solve “any mathematical problem” (Triumph, 2). It relied on the punch card input. The machine was never actually finished by Babbage, and today Herman Hollerith has been credited with the fabrication of the punch card tabulating machine.
