Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world. They are in charge of educating and preparing kids for the future. However, in order for a learning environment to function, effectively, students, teachers, and parents must work collaboratively to achieve successful outcomes. A collaborative relationship requires all parties’ engagement: teachers, students, and parents. When one of the parties fails to complete their tasks, the results will be catastrophic, causing the student to fail the educational system. The duty of the teachers is to educate the student for approximately four years in order for that alumni to move on to the next level of education. In “I just wanna be Average” Mike rose stated “If you’re a working class kid in the vocational track, a teacher will have to deal with constrained students in a certain way: you’re defined by your school as “slow”; you are placed in a curriculum that isn’t designed to liberate a students but occupy , or; if you are lucky, train you.” (Rose 350) Class segregation has now taken place and has deeply affected the education of a human. Students education should not be determined by their way of transportation to school, whether it be a car or the bus, students must be offered the same education. Teachers have different mentalities for their students. The students that live in the rich neighborhood are expected to be prepared because most of their parents have experienced high school and have a received degree from a university. On other hand, students that lived in low income neighborhoods are labeled as “slow” because their parents are most likely undocumented and don’t speak the native language. High School students are trained to scream the answer that their teachers want to hear, but not what they think. This causes them to have to adapt to the communities that they are a part of. This act of adapting to the difference in normative expectations is what Morton refers to as “straddling the gap” or “code switching”. These students not only have to navigate differences in language and dress codes but they have to switch dispositions to ones that are unfamiliar to them, which can come into conflict with those at home (Morton 276). The lack of cultural capital is especially drawn from the video we have watched in class on “Tammy’s story” which was about Tammy’s cultural capital and how it has a big impact on her aspirations, opportunities, and achievements. Poorer schools with more diverse populations have poor educational programs. Teachers methodically drone out outdated curriculum on timetables set by standards set by the state. Students are not engaged or encouraged to be creative thinkers. They are often not even given handouts or physical elements of education to touch or feel or engage them into really connecting to the material being presented by the teacher in front of them. Time is not wasted exploring any of the subjects in a meaningful way. As much of the curriculum is gone through as the teacher can get through given the restriction of having a classroom of students that are not picking it up adequately enough according to standardized tests scores. So time is spent re-droning the material to them and re-testing before the cycle repeats in this classroom and other subject classrooms in these types of school. This education is free. Many tend to shy away when anything concerning race is involved. The article’s title “Modern-Day Segregation in Public Schools” calls the issue directly out. Everyone realizes what segregation is. There is no question that the topic should be taken seriously. Kohli relates the issue back to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v. Board of Education of 1954, “…which mandated the desegregation of America’s public schools.” The Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education will forever be known as a highly historic and heart-wrenching decision. An emotional tactic was used as seen through an actual experience with a student. Walter Fields, the father of an African-American New Jersey student has seen firsthand the effects of tracking becoming another form of segregation. Field’s daughter scored high enough scores to be placed in an accelerated course at her high school, but was not placed in the course due to a lacking recommendation from her teacher. Fields stated “You can…look in a classroom and know whether it’s an upper level class or a lower level class based on the racial composition of the classroom.” This saying that the lower level classes are predominately comprised of African-Americans and the higher level classes are predominately comprised of white students. The situation is worsened when students who do not speak English are thrown into the schooling system and are expected to keep up with their English-speaking counterparts. Kristina Rizga describes a situation in her article titled “Everything You’ve Heard about Failing Schools is Wrong” where Maria, a high school student, is faced with difficulty learning because English is not her first language. But despite the daunting task ahead of her, she didn’t give up. She became very proficient in English and earned top grades in all of her classes. However, once standardized tests rolled around, the story changed. Rizga states, “But on the big state tests--the days-long multiple-choice exams that students in California take once a year—Maria scored poorly” (Rizga 253). By receiving high marks in her classes, Maria was given a false sense of security. Maria attended Mission High, a school in a troubled community that was far from the best school in the state. It has been known for decades that students, such as minority students and the learning disabled, are not challenged and are often stuck in underfunded schools (Rizga 258). This explains why Maria scored poorly on the standardized tests even though she scored very well in all of her classes. There is still inequality in the educational system, and minorities’ experience with education is shaped by discrimination and limited access, while white people’s experience with education is shaped by privilege and access. The educational experience for minorities is still segregated and unequal. This is because the number of white children that are withdrawn from school by their parents is higher than the number of people of color enrolling. White parents are unconsciously practicing the idea of “blockbusting,” where minorities begin to fill up a school; whites transfer their children to a school that has a small or no minority population. They unconsciously feel like once their child is in a school full of minorities that school would not get the proper funding from the federal government. Bonilla-Silvia (2001) states that “[i]nner-city minority schools, in sharp contrast to white suburban schools, lack decent buildings, are over-crowded, [and] have outdated equipment…” (97). The “No Child Left Behind” Act, which holds schools accountable for the progress of their students, measures students’ performance on standardized tests. School is the training ground for molding students to know their place in society and prepare them for the role they will play as adults in the disunited world. These standards are very stringent and enforced heavily by teachers and sometimes the students themselves. Lower class students have a very low bar set and usually do not have any intentions on surpassing that bar as they are unaware that socially there is not much expected out of them. According to Rose “Students will float to the mark you set. I and others in the vocational classes were bobbing in pretty shallow water" (126). Students are categorized into social class groups that restricts the level of education they will reach in their academic career. Educational systems can help or hinder the prospect of social mobility. Although many teachers work hard to ensure against favoritism, this is not always the case, partly because of the stigma attached to social class. Educators may give special opportunities to certain groups of children. Particularly children from high-class families are sometimes viewed as being more intelligent than those from lower social classes but if you have a good teacher that see’s the potential in you they will help you excel in school. Class influenced my choices of school, place of residence and most importantly the friends I make.
A teacher today needs to have an ability to relate to and create partnerships not with their students, but also families, administrators and other professionals. This ensures that all persons involved with the education of the student are on the same page. Teachers also serve as leaders in their classroom. They share their vision and goals with their students promoting positive attitudes in the classroom. Just like it is important for principals to respect and understand what their teachers need, students also need the support, understanding, respect and empathy from their teachers. When teachers demonstrate commitment in the classroom and set high expectations they raise the level of learning in the classroom. Teachers that work with the students and their parents to understand and meet their needs will achieve positive academic outcomes.
