A story that hooks a reader and keeps them hooked, is one that utilizes the happy medium of knowing and unknowing. Ed’s inability to control and overcome his fears offers the anxiety that makes the readers crave to know what happens next. For example, as Ed watches the woman being raped by her husband he explains, “My heart begins to suffocate me. It keeps rising until I can taste it. I can almost feel it beating on my tongue. I tremble, pull myself together, then tremble again” (Zusak 1.5.24). The author engages the readers with the ability to feel the same fear for the woman being raped that Ed feels. This disquietude is also apparent in the decisions Ed makes out of fear. After witnessing the rape and running away from the situation, Ed narrates, “At this point, you can probably tell what I've decided to do about the whole Edgar Street situation. Or at least you'll know if you're anything like me. Cowardly. Meek. Positively weak. Of course, in my infinite wisdom, I'm choosing to leave it for a while. You never know, Ed. It might just work itself out” (Zusak 1.7.1). The story evokes more feelings of anger and anxiety from the reader with this decision because of the need for Ed to change and be the hero the reader wants him to
