Hurricanes and tornadoes

Floosh! My house is gone! Tornadoes and hurricanes can cause devastating damage. Tornadoes and hurricanes can be very different but they also have a lot of similarities, they both happen frequently, they have all different kinds of wind speeds, and they happen in certain locations. These are just some of the similarities. Tornadoes can even be inside a hurricane (according to Spencer Adkins meteroligst on channel 13)!

To begin with, tornadoes and hurricanes happen frequently. Usually, 5 hurricanes hit the U.S in three years. So, they don't happen very often. Around 1,300 tornadoes hit the U.S. each year ("Protecting life and Property"). You can definitely tell that tornadoes happen more often than hurricanes. Anyways, you can get a more advanced warning about a hurricane than a tornado. You usually only get a 15 minute warning of a tornado. Hurricanes have something called categories. there are 5 categories they are just based on the speed of the wind. if it is closer to one than the hurricane isn't that bad, but if it is near five then it's very severe. Well, tornadoes can have winds speeds up to 300 miles per hour. Tornadoes have something called F.E.'s. F.E. are just like categories, but for a tornado instead of a hurricane.
