It begins by saying, “Kids who get called the worst names oftentimes find
each other. That's how it was with us. Skeezie Tookis and Addie Carle and Joe Bunch
and me.” Skeezie, Addie, Joe, and Bobby have been friends for a long time. They joke
together and have lunch together. They even gather once a week at the Candy Kitchen to
eat and talk about important issues. They call it The Forum. Life isn't always fair for
them, but they have each other and all they want to do is last the seventh grade.
To survive the seventh grade, they always stick together. Bobby says, “We call
ourselves the Gang of Five, but there are only four of us. We do it to keep people on their
toes. Make 'em wonder. Or maybe we do it because we figure that there's one more kid
out there who's going to need a gang to be a part of. A misfit, like us.” Although getting
through the seventh grade is more of a challenge than any of them had expected. It starts
with Addie's refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance in homeroom and her persistence on
creating a new political party to run for student council. The Gang of Five is in for a long
year. Along the way they learn about politics and popularity, love and loss, and what
Puck and Natty It all began with an interracial rap group called Puck & Natty. One half of this group was Berkley graduate Stephan Jenkins. Together, this duo's fifteen minutes of fame came on the 90210 soundtack, which gave Jenkins enough to buy groceries. The group eventually split, and Jenkins was on his way.
This book was brilliant. There were moments that made me laugh, moments that made me tremble in my chair, moments that made me cry, moments that melted my heart, and moments that made me want to rip my hair out at the roots. This book has it all, and it delivers it through a cold but much needed message.
I loved this book, it is so incredibly moving and you want to cry and
well as a group. When there are dances or football games at school we each take

Black Humor in Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle The phrase Black Humor has the broad meaning of poking "fun at subjects considered deadly serious or even taboo by some"2. This definition is simple, and yet embodies an important idea that is often lost in more complex definitions: the idea that Black Humor can actually be "fun", and provoke laughter. This is not, of course, the only important aspect of the term, and I shall explore some of the other important defining features of Black Humor before moving on to discuss its use in Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle3. Many critics have attempted definitions of Black Humor, none of them entirely successfully. The most significant recurring features of these definitions are that Black Humor works with: absurdity, ironic detachment4; opposing moral views held in equipoise, humanity's lack of a sense of purpose in the unpredictable nuclear age, the realization of the complexity of moral and aesthetic experience which affects the individual's ability to choose a course of action5; and a playing with the reader's ideas of reality6.
Gang involvement has been quite higher than past years. The 2008 National Youth Gang Survey estimates that about 32.4 percent of all cities, suburban areas, towns, and rural counties had a gang problem (Egley et al., 2010). This represented a 15 percent increase from the year 2002. The total number of gangs has also increased by 28 percent and total gang members have increased by 6 percent (Egley et al., 2010). This shows how relevant gang related activity is in today’s society. More locations are beginning to experience gang activity for the first time. Gang crime has also been on the rise in the past...

This is an odd little book, but a very important one nonetheless. The story it tells is something like an extended parablethe style is plain, the characters are nearly stick figures, the story itself is contrived. And yet ... and yet, the story is powerful, distressing, even heartbreaking because the historical trend it describes is powerful, distressing, even heartbreaking.

Many stereotypes of gangs have been fabricated. The problem is that a majority of gang members do not fit these stereotypes, which, in turn, makes it hard for the to be caught (Klein). Traditionally they organize their group around a specific neighborhood, school or housing projec...
