Now more than ever, people are learning about Human Trafficking, talking about it, and attempting to do something about it. January is now National Slavery and Human Trafficking prevention month (Jesionka, n.d.). There is also the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, which clearly defines trafficking, poses penalties for trafficking, and offers protections and services for trafficking victims (Jesionka, n.d.). Now is a great time to gain knowledge about Human Trafficking. The definition of Human Trafficking includes recruiting, moving, harboring, or obtaining a person through force or fraud. Human trafficking is a particularly cruel type of slavery because it removes the victim from all that is familiar to her, rendering her completely isolated and alone, and often unable to speak the language of her captors or fellow victims (Soroptimist). Many times the reasons for trafficking is twofold, economics play a major role so does levels of vulnerability (jesionka, the muse). A family that doesn’t have enough food or shelter may choose to sell themselves or their children into an exploitative labor situation so that they can get things such as cell phones, a new roof, or even high-end bags (jesionka, the muse). The poorest and most unstable countries have the highest percentages of human trafficking; extreme poverty is a common bond among trafficking victims (Soroptimist). An increase in women’s part time and informal sector work, push women into poorly-paid jobs and long-term and hidden unemployment, which leaves women vulnerable to sex traffickers (Soroptimist). Though national and international intuitions may attempt to regulate and enforce anti-trafficking legislation, local governments and police forces may in fact be participating in sex trafficking rings.
