For the purpose of writing an extra essay for my class in the Underground Railroad I have decided to analyse human trafficking in my home country of Switzerland. Switzerland is consistently one of the wealthiest, safest, and most beautiful nations to live in. Many Swiss are diligent, wealthy, and Christian. However, many internationally do not know of the trafficking which exists within Switzerland’s border. Historically known as a neutral country, Switzerland’s system of government contains many libertarian aspects with citizens voting on everything from Jam tax to army conscription on a daily basis. Switzerland believes in women’s rights, and the right to one’s body, as such, it allows women to prostitute themselves without a pimp. However, this also means many women work sexually to pay off the debts which arose due to being smuggled into Switzerland. Due to Switzerland’s high salaries, and low taxes it is one of the most desirable nations for women from poor countries. Specifically Eastern Europe, the Swiss government discovered recently that Eastern European women, specifically Roumanians, were trafficked for sexual exploitation. Having lived in Roumania, and knowing the language I can see the desire for these women to escape. According to the U.S. Government's 2011 Trafficking in Persons report, Switzerland was rated in "Tier 2" for its efforts against human trafficking. Unfortunately, Switzerland does not wholly follow international requirements. However, the 2014 Trafficking in Persons report indicates that Switzerland is a "Tier 1" country, indicating that the government "fully complies with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking." I can find no reason for Switzerland lapsing to 2nd Tier from 2011-2014 except that the SPS political party was in power who are known for being inefficient, often wasting the budget gained from the different
