Human Interaction via the Internet
Throughout the course of this class, and more specifically the process of generating an idea for my final project, I found myself drawn time and again to the way people interact with each other electronically namely the internet. Having been involved in computers and nearly everything related for the majority of my life I have experienced a number of different tools and applications from chat rooms to online games to instant messaging that provide a means of interacting with others in a number of different ways. This experience and other concepts and ideas that Ive either read about or envisioned stood as my foundation in deciding on and formulating this project.
The many methods of electronic interaction can be overwhelming. With the relatively recent emergence of online gaming we have been exposed to yet another. This form of interaction however is more involved than most. There are monsters and quests to distract you and keep you busy doing other things. This is probably not the ideal environment for the casual chat room user. On the other hand a standard chat room or even slightly more visual instant messaging programs may not hold the interest of the avid gamer. I wanted to do something that would appeal to both sides while at the same time staying true to the social interaction that from which so many of the online games tend to stray. By combining a familiar chatting environment with the visual graphics of a digital environment a hybrid experience a more engrossing experience can be achieved.
Your average chat room focuses on text as the main resource for transmitting and gathering information about the many different users. In the world around us a much larger portion of perception is taken from imagery. However, we often use words and images in combination to present information that could not be conveyed by either one alone.* By combining the two, a more complete picture is formed. Likewise, by adding a world environment that each users custom, animated avatar can move around in people can express them selves in a completely new dimension that has never really been explored in a chat environment before. Not only would each user decide on a unique name, they will also be able to decide on the physical appearance of their own character. From gender to hair style and color to clothing everyone will have enough options to be able to choose a unique look all their own.
Hatshepsut stands apart for her historical legacy as opposed to Cleopatra, “Egypt’s Cleopatra looms large more for her romantic exploits than her historical legacy. One Egyptian queen stands apart, however: Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt for some two decades at the beginning of the fifteenth century B.C. A strong and effective pharaoh, she oversaw a cultural renaissance that influenced the arts in Egypt for more than a millennium” (Roehrig and Dreyfus
Today the internet serves as a major source of communication in several different ways. When thinking about communication
“His majesty, herself”: ruler of consequence and inconsequence. She was one of the most controversial rulers of ancient Egyptian history. The discovery in 2007 of her remains and tomb creating more questions than answers. The Addition Severity Index is a well-known and widely used tool for use in treating alcoholics and other addicts. It is an approximately 45 to 60 minute long interview comprised of questions about the patient’s life. The interview covers eight subscales focusing on many different parts of a person’s life which helps to provide a comprehensive understanding of their life. The severity is scored on a ten point scale ranging from no problem or treatment indicated to extreme problem, treatment absolutely necessary. The scale helps the interviewer determine the seriousness of a client’s problem and to plan an effective course of treatment. The ASI can also be found in a self-administered paper-and-pencil form and an interactive CD-ROM multimedia version for the computer (Maleka, 2004). This test has been found to be reliable by most but some others do not agree. It is difficult to say whether or not the test is a reliable and valid measure of treatment due to the complexity of the questions. Once a client’s psychosocial needs are identified it is easier to find treatment suitable for that client. There are some problems with the test such as it is not properly designed to cover such a wide population (Maleka, 2004). Other problems include irrelevant questions for alcoholics and other drug users, difficulty remembering relevant information, and lying and exaggerating information for the best interest of the patient (Maleka, 2004). Use of the ASI can be found to be particularly problematic when used with the homeless or double-diagnosis patients. The ASI can be used in a wide range of treatment settings including clinical, research, and administrative. This comprehensive evaluation is a useful tool that helps professionals understand the
Hatshepsut was one of ancient Egypt’s most outstanding rulers. Hatshepsut meaning ‘Foremost of Noble Women’ was the first female pharaoh of Kemet, she was the longest reigning female pharaoh reigning for more than 20 years. She built sensational temples and successfully defended Egypt’s borders very well. However, after her death in 1457 BC, her monuments were pulled down, her name and legacy were demolished from history. It would be over 3,000 years before her story was talked about again.
Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt during the 18th dynasty, was one of a small handful of female pharaohs. Despite her many achievements, her reign is most remembered for the fact that she was a woman. Her unique story has been a source for dispute among scholars, which has led to a number of conflicting views. The small amount of Hatshepsut’s life that has been documented does not allow us to see the more intimate details of her life. Historians have a broad range of opinions on her, but one thing is certain: her reign provided Egypt with a period of peace and prosperity after 100 years of foreign rule. There are a number of theories involving Hatshepsut’s personal and public life.
This article describes the rating scales for depression and why Hamilton Rating Scales were once the “gold standard” in assessing depression. It explains several scales
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is defined as a psychological response resulting from exposure to a traumatic event or extreme stressor where an individual has felt significant fear, hopelessness or horror. When the liver consumes alcohol for the first time the body treats it like a negative foreign substance. The consumption of alcohol has a similar effect on every person’s body. The greater the amount of alcohol that a person drinks, the greater the changes of developing some kind of problem with the body. Some research has been done to test how alcohol addiction is classified in individuals. In their experiment, researchers “analyzed the characteristics of 1,484 people participating in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions who fit the criteria for alcohol dependence” (Elliot, 2007). The analysis found that 31.5% could be considered as “young adult” drinkers that tend to drink less frequently, but when they did, it was to excess and more likely to be involved in dangerous drinking. 19.4% of people could be considered as “functional” drinkers because they earn more money than other drinkers and had a higher chance of having college degrees. Another 18.8% were “intermediate familial” since they had bigger chances of having a disorder or a relative with a similar disorder. According to the study, 21.1% were considered “young antisocial” since they were the most likely to start drinking early and develop alcohol problems. There was also one last category, where 9.2% were labeled as “chronic severe” because they are “most likely to have other
In the January 18th, 2012 New York Times article “The False Ideals of the Web”, Jaron Lanier attempts to take a very difficult issue – one that many view in terms of black or white – and find some middle ground. Unfortunately, what he ends up doing in the article is create an either/or situation, rather than find any middle ground. In the end we are left in the same situation that we started with.
Throughout history, developments in technology and communications have gone hand-in-hand in society’s advancement. However, the most significant impact of technology is in the communication department, because the spread internet has made sending emails, chatting, paying bills and finding a date affordable and quick. People can use Facebook, Skype, Yahoo or Gmail to communicate efficiently and instantly to their friends and loved one’s for no cost at all if they choose to.
