American Senior Assistance Programs is Huntsville’s first geriatric care management company. Many of the clients that the company serve are senior citizens between ages fifty and ninety. According to Erikson’s human development theory, many of the clients ASAP serve are at the last stage of development. In total, there are eight stages of human development. The last stage is Integrity versus Despair in which majority of the clients at ASAP are in. Clients must cope at these stages of development because it is important. What is the History of the Human Development Theory? Many of those who are not behavioral science majors may not be familiar with the Human Development Theory. This is the stage where serious relationships form whether its family, friends, or significant others. This is also the period where adults that lack intimacy find themselves isolating from it. The success in this stage will lead to the virtue of what love is. The seventh stage is generativity vs stagnation. This stage is during middle adulthood ages forty to sixty-five. This is where careers, families, and achievements should be settled. If these things are not happening during this stage of live then some may feel stagnate and …show more content…
This stage of life is for senior citizens that are sixty-five and older. In the last stage of human development, having integrity at an elderly age is rewarding. Elders should look back at their life and think about the accomplishments that they have made in their life. This is the period of their life where acceptance is important. Those who cannot accept where they are in this stage of life will more than likely feel the opposite of integrity, which is despair. Despair is the stage where elders look back on their life and feel regrets. An elderly may feel depressed that they have wasted opportunities in this stage. This is why ASAP serves the elderly making sure they cope with this stage of human development by ensuring they have the best quality of life. This psychosocial theory is one of the main reasons why ‘changing the way America ages’ is what American Senior Assistances Programs is all about. Many elders want to look back on their life and enjoy what they have done. However, not everyone is as fortunate to grow old and healthy. This could mean that many elders begin to see signs in decreasing health and become incompetent. Therefore, caregivers, care managers, or even guardians have to be appointed in order to take care of the elders
The seventh stage, generativity vs. self-absorption, begins at middle adulthood. This is the age of caring, producing, and loving people. The video shows an example of a man obtaining generativity by raising his children.
Upon growing older there are many decisions to be made. Among one of the most difficult and perhaps most important decisions is where the elder person will live and how long-term care needs will be met when he/she is no longer capable of doing so independently due to the incapacity that accompanies many with old age. Nursing homes seem to be the popular choice for people no matter the race, gender, or socioeconomic status with 1.5 million Americans being admitted to them yearly.[3] Because nursing homes are in such a high demand and are not cheap, $77.9 billion was spent for nursing home care in the United States in 2010 alone, they are under criticism of many professions including the legal profession, which is in the process of establishing elder law as a defense to issues with in the elder community. Nursing homes have a duty to provide many things to the elderly including medical, social, pharmaceutical, and dietary services so that the individual may maintain the highest well-being possible.[4] Stated another way 'a nursing facility must care for its residents in such a manner and in such an environment as will promote maintenance or enhancement of the q...
Integrity vs. despair is Erikson's eighth and final stage in development, which occurs in Old Age. Older adults look back on their lives and evaluate the outcomes. Those who view their life as productive and satisfying feel a sense of integrity. Those who do not see their life as productive will feel disappointed causing despair.
To begin to understand an individual must start to understand the current status of care for the elderly people with dementia. In the twenty-first century there are differences that occur that are unlike past elderly care (Bookman & Kimbrel, 2011). One difference that is looked at is the six key groups that people look for in outsourcing are health care providers, nongovernmental community-based service providers, employers, government, families, and elders themselves (Bookman & Kimbrel, 2011). Roberto and Jarrott (2008) discuss one of the key groups that Bookman and Kimbrel (2011) talk about. In Roberto and Jarrott’s (2008) article they explain that older adults have to rely on family member for instrumental support and more intense care activities.
One consequence of a caregiver having an ageist attitude can be the overmedication of geriatric patients. Overmedication can occur if medical providers offer misguided health recommendations based

Assisted living is an effective type of care facility programmed towards helping older individuals with their increasing disabilities. “The fit between individual capacity and the availability of satisfying activities within an environment is an important aspect of positive aging and an especially salient issue for ALF [Assisted Living Faculty] management, given the role of activities in the consumer selection of assisted living”.2 This isolation of this quote is “positive aging”. Positive aging is important since it leads individuals to have a happier and more fulfilling life, and it can be supported through everyday activities and through the living environment. In nursing homes, each individual needs help with making sure that they are given care that meets their needs. This varies through different states and also communities. The purpose of the quote is to show that each person should be evaluated individually, meaning everyone needs a different approach to deal with the aging process.
Older adults are a very knowledgeable population and have had a lot of life experiences. As people age, things start to change physically, mentally, and socially. It’s important to understand the process of aging, so that older adults can be taken care of properly. I interviewed P.R. who is a 71-year-old male that lives alone in his home. P.R. is a retired coal miner, and is currently living off his social security and savings. He lives close to both his daughter and son, who frequently help him out with things that are needed. P.R. was able to give me a lot of insight about specific challenges that he has experienced in his life that is associated with aging. I will be discussing challenges that P.R experienced physically, mentally,
In today’s society, what was once said to be true and taken as fact regarding older people is no longer the whole story. As Laslett states, “At all times before the middle of the twentieth century and all over the globe the greater part of human life potential has been wasted, by people dying before their allotted time was up.” (1989a), and to a great extent a lot

Today, the world’s population is aging at a very fast pace and the United States is no exception to this demographic change. According to the U.S Census Bureau, senior citizens will account for 21% of the American population in 2050 (Older Americans, 2012). Although living longer lives may not seem like a negative sign, living longer does not necessarily mean living healthier. Older adults of today are in need of long-term health care services more than any generation before them (Older Americans, 2012). Because of the growing need for senior care, millions of families are facing critical decisions on how to provide care for their parents.
Middle adulthood is the generatively vs. stagnation stages in which an adult must care of others and realize that they need a family or a legacy. During this stage, people will nurture their own family or find ways to nurture others that need to be nurtured outside their immediate family. If an adult does not overcome the crisis during this stage, then they will not grow which will result in them being selfish and
Adults are self-motivated learners. Adult’s great desire to learn is brought about by immediate need to solve practical problems. Adult learners decide what to learn, the need to learn, how to learn and when to learn. This concept applies to the topic of providing care to the elderly and resolving practical problems. Adults want to learn how to solve problems and why they are doing it (which is improving the emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing of loved ones). As problem centered learners adult care givers take responsibility in learning ways to solve this
Before I took this class, I wrote about the fear I faced in relation to the loss of independence that will come with ageing. After taking this class, I am still dreading this loss of independence, but am encouraged to do as much as I can for myself, for as long as I can. I take comfort in the types of long term care options that are available. Before this class I assumed that all long-term care would almost completely strip the resident of
In the article Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development it talks about how Erikson focuses and breaks down each developing stage off personality in a persons life. His ideas and thoughts about this were highly influenced by the great Sigmund Freud, however Freud was an id psychologist where as Erikson was an ego psychologist. This meant Erikson glorified the role of culture and society and problems that can take place within the ego, unlike Freud who focused on the conflict between the id and the superego of a person. Erikson came up with a lifespan model of development of taking five stages up to the age of 18 and the three more stages into adulthood. These stages are somewhat guidelines on how to successfully establish
