Explain why the human body requires relatively stable internal conditions.
The human body maintains a constant internal environment which is homeostasis, the cells in the body have common basic needs such as water, nutrient and oxygen to satisfy the body. Survival in the body depends on relatively stable internal environments such as the kidney, digestive tract, endocrine, nervous system and optimum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, pH and blood glucose. When the temperature goes up, the enzymes in the body get denatured and if it goes down it will not function appropriately. The enzyme catalysed response increases as the temperature goes up. Changes to internal temperature can be harmful. For example, when the body loses too much heat, the muscles spasm (shivers) uncontrollably to produce heat. Hormones that regulate the amount of water in the body is called antidiuretic (ADH) which is also known as vasopressin. Antidiuretic is produced in the hypothalamus in the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. In the hypothalamus are osmoreceptors that detect osmotic pressure in the blood tissue fluid in the hypothalamus. If there is more water, osmatic pressure reduces the blood perfusing in the hypothalamus. Less antidiuretic influences the kidney by causing the kidney to produce a larger volume of urine excreted from the body. If there is too much water there is less antidiuretic and more diuretic effect gets rid of excess water, fluid and the osmotic balance is restored. If there is less water in the body, osmotic potential is increased in the blood tissue fluid in the hypothalamus.
