From the epic Beowulf, Hrothgar is the king of the Danes in the story. He is an important character and is the one who guides Beowulf into defeating the evil monster Grendel. While Beowulf is the hero and Grendel is the villain, Hrothgar in this scenario is more of a bystander despite being “a great king” as stated in the story. He faces many hardships when it comes to the evils that threaten his people. We know that despite being a powerful ruler, he still had his faults alongside his accomplishments. There are many things that prevented the king from being able to protect his people as much as he wanted to. One thing that Hrothgar faced was his old age. Hrothgar also lost his closest friend, Grendel’s mother. He again calls for Beowulf saying, “Save us, once more, and twisted gold, heaped-up ancient treasure, will reward you for the battle you win!” He needs someone to save his people as he cannot. This shows his vulnerability in the situations at hand. Despite all his struggles, Hrothgar was a good king. In fact, he was the one who built Herot, the “gold-shining hall”. He was a wise and generous king, who, after Beowulf and his army defeated the evils, were gifted treasures for their victory. In the story, the Danes often say that they “did not find fault” with Hrothgar because, “for that was a good king.” Hrothgar has been shown to really care for his people. When Grendel begins his attack on the hall, the story states, “Hrothgar, their lord, sat joyless in Herot, a mighty prince mourning the fate of his lost friends and companions, knowing by its tracks that some demon had torn his followers apart.” Hrothgar had a connection with his followers.
