• What is a challenge to reporting to more than one manager in a matrix organization? What might be a benefit?
The main challenge of a Matrix Organization is to keep the stability between product management and department management. The employees, in this kind of organizations, are expected to respond to two lines of management. Taking directions from two sources may lead to opposing directions, and consequently, lead to disputes among management teams. The primary benefit of the two lines of management is the higher efficiency; In this kind of organization formal and informal communication are very high, and technical issues are fixed quicker as well as customers demands.
• What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of being employed by a boundary-less organization?

What is the greatest benefit?
Learning organizations for their nature must invest so much in new projects to acquire knowledge. I think that these are the riskiest yet revolutionary companies in the market. They are very risky because new projects need a lot of money to be sustained, and no one knows if the project will succeed or not. They are the most revolutionary too because the most significant inventions or the greatest products always need a little bit of madness and faith to be conceived. The most notable benefits of these companies are the capacity to adapt to the changing environment and the high potential they have.
• Which kind of organization would you like to work for? Why?
I really reflected much on this question because I think the answer is not immediate. I would exclude the matrix model because of its ambiguity between the lines of management, and I believe that this model is not suitable for the changing environment we live
There will be a cluster of different skills working together. This also saves time in inter-departmental communication. A matrix also lets people lower down the organisational chart use their skills. Weaknesses of a Matrix structure It can be expensive if extra help is needed. Staff may be divided in loyalties because they wouldn’t which job is most important.
Innovation has rapidly assumed a position of prominence in world competition on a global scale. To compete in this environment, organizations need a level of innovation. As competition becomes more global and time-based, organizations must develop and deliver new and superior products or services in less time. The challenge for modern organizations is to revitalize them so they can successfully and continuously develop newer products and enhance business development.
The second issue arising is their inability to have a standardize form of collecting and presenting data. In the case of H&M, they had adopted matrix structure, one of the traditional organizational structure, into their business. Organizations must operate within structures that allow them to perform at their best within their given environments. According to theorists T. Burns and G.M Stalker (1961), organizations require structures that will allow them to adapt and react to changes in the environment (Mechanistic vs Organic Structures, 2009). Toyota Company’s corporate structure is spelt out as one where the management team and employees conduct operations and make decisions through a system of checks and balances.
Over recent years companies have become less dependent on paper and more dependent on technology. Take American Honda Motors for example; the Davenport Parts facility recently converted computer systems to more efficiently manage its inventory. Prior to its new system months of preparation was needed in order to ensure a smooth change over. Without the four basic functions of management all working together success would not have been possible.
The market-oriented structure groups workers according to the market they serve, such as product, project, client, or geographical area. Large companies that implement a market-oriented structure may have market-based divisions or create a conglomerate of separate subsidiaries (Judith R. Gordon, 2002). I believe that this structure is more adoptable by those multinational corporations which have to respond to diverse cultures and meet the unique needs of various countries. The teams have the same goal meeting the market demands.
Managerial decisions are an important component in achieving the objectives of the organization. The success or failure of a business depend upon the decisions made by managers (Jurina, 2011). Today’s increasing complexity in the world of business brought forth greater challenges for both the firm and its managers. The rapid rate of technological and digital advance as well as greater focus product innovation and processes that influence marketing and sales techniques have contributed to the increasing complexity in the business environment.
Organizational structure within an organization is a critical component of the day to day operations of a business. An organization benefits from organizational structure as a result of all it encompasses. It is used to define how tasks are divided, grouped and coordinated. Six elements should be addressed during the design of the organization’s structure: work specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, spans of control, centralization and decentralization. These components are a direct reflection of the organization’s culture, power and politics.
Managers should take note of the value in inquiry, development, and forecasting future technological innovations in order to keep ahead of their competition.
