How the Gates Foundation Reduces Poverty
“We all have the chance to create a world where extreme poverty is the exception rather than the rule, and where all children have the same chance to thrive, no matter where they’re born” (Guacci).
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation started in 1997 when the Gates family read an article about the millions of children in poor countries who were dying from disease. They have been working to reduce poverty and poor health throughout the world ever since as well as create a better world for both future and present generations. The Gates Foundation is one of the few truly transparent organizations in the world where no money is going into the pockets of the founders. The two founders of the foundation are Bill Gates, who is the co-chair and a trustee, and his wife Melinda Gates, who is also, serves as co-chair and trustee. Other trustees are Warren Buffet and William Gates Sr. Several others work for the organization as both permanent staff and volunteers. We will be looking at their areas of focus, strategies, and main goals. We will also review how they give out grants and their overall effectiveness ("Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.").
The Gates foundation focuses mostly on trying to decrease poverty and improve health in developing countries as well as address the failures of the American education system. They have many strategies for reducing global poverty and an overarching goal to digitally connect people. This essay reviews their work in global poverty reduction ("Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.").
As an organization they believe that they can accomplish more by looking at fewer issues rather than being overwhelmed with multiple problems, which is why they largely focus...

...e where we want it to be today, with all the starvation and poverty it is almost unbearable to look at the facts. The Gates Foundation is trying to change that. Poverty is something that may take many years to overcome but with the Gates Foundation in the lead I am confident that we can succeed.

The writer behind “Singers Solution to World Poverty” advocates that U.S. citizens give away the majority of their dispensable income in order to end global suffering. Peter Singer makes numerous assumptions within his proposal about world poverty, and they are founded on the principle that Americans spend too much money on items and services that they do not need.

When most people hear about Bill Gates the first thing that comes to mind is the obscene amount of money he has made through out his career. Owning many different foundations, the most common foundation known to most college students is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that provide many different scholarships. However, this foundation also does various things to give back to communities and aiding suffering countries. Within this foundation there are also various branches such as the United States Program, The Global Development Program and the Global health program that have grown over time making the Gates a commonly used household name.
Global poverty is often defined in absolute terms of low income nearly half of the world's population-more than 3 billion people- live on less than $2.50 a day, for example. In this article Mr. Gates elaborated on his inpatients with the shortcomings of capitalism, advocating for a revision of what most consider the free will of capitalism. Planning to call for a "creative capitalism" that uses market forces to address the poorer-countries needs that are being ignored. The 2008 documentary The End of Poverty? is a film that focuses around global poverty and how it became the tragedy that it is today. Poverty was created by acts of military conquest, slavery and colonization that led to the confiscation of individual’s property and forced labor. However, today the problem remains because wealthy countries who take advantage of developing third world countries. The film interviews several activists who discuss how the issues became and several ways in which they could be eliminated, as well as interviews from individuals who are experiencing it firsthand.
Bill Gates is now helping people in developing countries get water and an education full time. He created what is called the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “In 2008 he left the company to devote himself full-time to his charity the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation”(Harris 1). He has worked his whole life to get the success and money that he has today and instead of keeping it to himself he has given it back to society in many generous ways. He also is helping developing countries with their needs that aren't accessible to them. “They helped vaccinate African and Asian children against diseases like polio and malaria. And they have been very successful in helping get rid of these diseases for good.”(Harris 1). This foundation helped poorer countries get the medical help they need to get rid of illnesses that should have already been gone by now. Bill and his wife had had an impact on the world by doing these things
Far too often do we view a subject from the distance. Its meaning, its core, is only observed, studied, but never truly grasped. Poverty. A disease that plagues the homes of over 3 billion people. 3 billion, half of the world’s population, lives in a state of struggle, hunger, and pain that is unimaginable. But, in the same breath, especially in the western dialogue, we tend to lump these souls in the “other category.” The “starving” Africans, the “malnourished” Indians, and rarely does the dialogue extend into our own backyards. The fact is, poverty impacts every nation, and every country, and it is important to emphasize just how global this parasite really is. It is easy to explore poverty when discussing it from a distance, because it does not seem as real, it does not seem as scary. Movies, like Slumdog Millionaire, serve a purpose to entertain as well as begin
The very first global challenge that I identified is global poverty. Poverty is based mostly on the lack of income or wages that the poor is receiving. Based on the “11 Facts of Global Poverty”, more than 3 billion people in the world live with less than $2.50 per day and nearly half of that amount live in extreme poverty, with just $1.25 per day (2015). This problem extends to the extreme where the article also stated “22,000 children die each day due to poverty”, which has a serious affect on the world’s population (2015). According to the article “Quick Facts about Poverty”, 80% of the global poor are located at Sub-Saharan Africa and also South Asia (2015).

The elimination of poverty is crucial; however, one cannot attempt to abolish global poverty while living in a state of unawareness. Individuals must question both the local and global statistics, analyze the effects of poverty, and reflect on potential causes of this global phenomenon. Without basic knowledge, eliminating poverty is an unmanageable concept. However, although daunting, this complex issue is of great importance. With understanding, one can begin to effectively contribute to the eradication of local and global poverty. Individuals must strive to develop a broader knowledge of the topic of global poverty in order to better prepare to contribute to its
Poverty is an issue which the world faces everyday. It is a constant struggle that cannot be ignored anymore. As you can see defeating poverty would take great efforts and contributions from all. We must better educate the youth and have education available for everyone all over the world. We also need to ensure that everyone has a job and that they are properly skilled for the job. People need to realize that poverty affects everyone, not only the poor and uneducated. Our world would be a much better place if everyone pitched in to help defeat a major problem around the world, poverty.
Poverty, also known as the silent killer, exists in every corner of the world. In fact, almost half of the world’s population lives in poverty. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were 46.7 million people living in poverty the year of 2014 (1). Unfortunately, thousands of people die each year due to this world-wide problem. Some people view poverty as individuals or families not being able to afford an occupational meal or having to skip a meal to save money. However, this is not the true definition of poverty. According to the author of The Position of Poverty, John Kenneth Galbraith, “people are poverty-stricken when their income, even if adequate for survival, falls radically behind that of the community”, which means people
