According to Stanford’s Children health, almost 215,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for football related injuries. This isn’t even including the NFL or people over 14 years old. Football is a dangerous sport and the most common injury/most fatal in some cases are concussions. In football, there is an estimated 64-70 percent of concussions. The main equipment you need for football in order not to get injured are; a helmet, mouth guard, shoulder pads, thigh pads, knee pads, butt pad, cleats with ankle support, chin strap, and possibly gloves. Not wearing this equipment or wearing equipment that isn’t fitted to your body can result into serious injuries during football considering this is one of the highest impact contact sports. Ways you can prevent injuries in football are staying hydrated, using correct form while playing, and most importantly, …show more content…
According to Daniel E. Matthews and Jo A. Hannafin of Stop Sports Injuries, there is an estimate that more than 1.6 million injuries are associated with basketball each year. The most common injuries in basketball would consist of; ankle sprains, jammed fingers, knee injuries, deep thigh bruises, facial cuts, and foot fractures. Basketball is a very fast paced sport. These injuries however, can be reduced or even prevented if the correct precautions are taken. Although there is little to no safety equipment used, if the the rules of the game are followed and players are careful, there is little to worry about. The most important precautions you should take are stretching before the game, staying hydrated, knowing when you should take a break, and keeping your coach informed on current
OUTLINE Thesis: Although most hockey athletes believe that by wearing required equipment keeps them safe from injury, however I believe that these regulations should be stricter because of the severity of recent and past injuries. Wearing headgear has many positives, reducing injuries is the most obvious one and it could be argued that its help reduces the chance of injuries and even death. At an elite level, Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech is convinced that wearing headgear saved him from suffering extended injuries after colliding with Fulham striker Orlando Sa back in September 2011. Headgear offers a form of padding when worn. It allows juniors and elite athlete’s the reduced chance of head wounds. By this it means it allows for less “cracked skulls”, scars, wounds and so on. It gives a stronger protection on the softer part of the skull which is more prone to damage...
Explain the term "injury prevention" and give examples of ways to prevent at least three specific injuries.
This is because the equipment does not protect the important parts of the body that are most vulnerable to injuries. Furthermore, they also don’t make football players hit or tackle other players correctly, leading to serious injury and some have even died, due to concussions or other serious injuries.
American football is full of exciting competition, but do we realize the danger! Helmet safety in football remains an immense problem as the sport accounts for the highest incidence of concussions. Since leather football helmets, the technology for safer helmets has improved drastically and continue to improve. The development of newly designed helmets and technology has lowered the risk of head injuries for players. Furthermore, improvements in helmet testing methods have led to better understanding head injuries and the protectiveness of the helmet. In respect, football helmet safety still remains a challenge, such as a necessity of a proper categorization system to rank helmets and regulations to improve helmet safety. Regardless, standards and regulations attempt to address helmet safety through government intervention and a proper measuring system for football helmets. Despite the cultural perception of football, measures are taken to ensure safety, such as the reforms and education with regards to playing safer football. I intend to address the technological advances and regulation of football towards the discussion of helmet safety. Therefore the aggresivity in football’s culture should embrace stronger helmet standards and regulation that are promoted through improved testing methods and innovations because of the need to prevent further dangerous head injuries, especially concussions.
There are many ways you can prevent injuries from happening before they do occur. Make sure you lift the right amount of weight to ensure that your body won’t wear down or you won’t injure yourself. Lifting more than you need to will only make your body worse. Using poor form can get you hurt quicker and easier than any other way. Make sure that you are using the correct form even if that means hiring a trainer or having a spotter. Workouts that you know can help because you will know the correct position. Workouts without machinery and weights have a lesser risk of hurting you. Cassidy says, “Years of intense workouts take a toll on your body..... Cartilage wears down and muscles, tendons, and ligaments can become less limber” (1).
Your equipment needs to keep you safe in this sport. The football helmet is the most important one because it protects your brain and keeps you from having a head injury or from becoming paralyzed. You also need a mouth guard to protect your teeth because who wants to walk around with no teeth in their mouth. Next, you have thigh, hip, and knee pads, these protect your lower body, and they prevent you from damaging your lower body. Then we have the shoulder pads, these pads protect your chest and shoulders. Last we have football cleats, these help you keep grip to the grass or turf so you won’t twist an ankle or etc.
To summarize, football is a dangerous sport that can cause multiple serious injuries like brain damage, concussions, fractures and or death. The majority of people still think football is a menace, especially for teens that are still growing and developing. Equally important, there are analysis and programs indicate a number of injuries between high school exposures and collegiate football exposures and trying to find safer ways to play. Then again, there are doctors, trainers, and N.F.L players that are recommending new ideas to create a safer game for everyone to play without risking injuries as
The problems and injuries that come with playing football have been obvious since the beginning, and to this day are still being discovered and researched in hopes of finding solutions so that the sport is not so dangerous. Malcolm Gla...
Football is a very exciting sport to play and watch. Boys enjoy getting a touch down and kicking a field goal. People love to sit and watch their friends and family perform. Even though everyone gets a lot excitement out of it, football can be very dangerous. The danger can occur within getting tackled or just by running up and down the field. "Football is at a crossroads," says Jodi Balsam, a sports law professor at Brooklyn Law School in New York. "And that crossroads is about convincing the next generation of players and their parents that the game is safe to play and that the rewards of playing outweigh the risks." (New York Times Upfront, Charles) Football has always been a sport known for hard tackles and rough play, making injuries inevitable. Football is a dangerous sport because it can lead to problems with the head like: concussions, brain damage, and head trauma.
Many people are more active today than they were many years ago. Injury prevention and diagnosis plays a big role in today’s society. Preventing an injury is important for many athletes all over the world, and for people that are physically active. Preventing injuries can benefit an athlete in the long run. Athletic trainers help athletes and physically active people stay healthy for what they do on a daily basis.
Contact sports in America, like football and boxing, carry a rich history of the spirit of the game, and the feeling of victory. These games bring us together as we cry out and cheer for our team or fighter as they deliver the winning touchdown, or the knockout that brings them the undisputed champion belt. However, these players are facing injuries that can destroy their career and affect their brain for the rest of their lives. We shouldn’t outlaw contact sports, but we should force safety to become more important. If we want to keep our players safe and continue the tradition of the contact sports we enjoy as a country, then we must evolve our safety in sports, and change the way we view contact sports as a country.
Head Injuries In Football Since football was created in 1869, head injuries have been an issue. Constant contact and bodies colliding give the sport its bad reputation. Football is America’s most popular sport but many fear the game due to its reputation. All football leagues have been improving helmets to reduce injuries but the head injuries can still be prevented greatly.
