In order to make a book that the reader will be able to follow and make it compelling to them as well, one needs to include a variety of different elements. In Anh Do’s autobiography, ‘The Happiest Refugee,’ includes a prologue at the beginning of the text in order to capture the reader’s attention and hook them into reading further. It focuses on Anh’s emotional meeting with his estranged father whom he hasn’t met since his childhood. This event serves as a central point for the story. Subsequently, the rest of the story explains his early life with his father, why he became estranged and also the events following his reunion with his father. At the end of the prologue Anh asks what his fathers new son is called and his father replies, ‘his name is Anh. I named him after you’ (page VII) This makes the reader want to know if Anh meant so much to him why did he leave. After that sentence the story goes back into the past to before Anh’s birth and his childhood and the story is focused on building up to the event in the prologue, explaining all the background and troubles that caused his father to leave.
In the novel All The Shah’s Men we are introduced to Iran, and the many struggles and hardships associated with the history of this troubled country. The Iranian coup is discussed in depth throughout the novel, and whether the Untied States made the right decision to enter into Iran and provide assistance with the British. If I were to travel back to 1952 and take a position in the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) for the sole purpose of examining the American Foreign Intelligence, I would have to conclude that the United States should have examined their options more thoroughly, and decided not to intervene with Iran and Mossadegh. I have taken this position after great analysis, which is something that Eisenhower and his staff never did. By discussing the history of Iran, the Anglo-Iranian oil company, and Document NSC-68 I will try to prove once and for all that going through with the coup in Iran was a terrible mistake made by the United States.

The Affluent Society was written in 1958. A little information about Professor Galbraith, he was a Harvard economics professor. Served on many US president’s staffs as well as he were great writer. A lot of his theory is based on Keynesian economics. This book, The Affluent Society, is part of a trilogy. The book tackles the status of the US post World War II. It gives great insight into the political, economical as well as pop culture during the time. Each one of those areas is linked together to show the wealth gap that was beginning, that is now a huge problem in our society today. Instead of breaking down the book chapter by chapter, I would like to break down the book into vital areas that make the book what it is. It is extremely interesting how genius Prof. Galbraith is. To be able to research and connect the dots of these extreme and what seems “non relatable” subjects and make them relate in order convey a problem for us to see. Unfortunately, our country did not look at this serious enough. The book also shows a great deal of progress our country made in such little time. In the matter of a decade, the technical, social and political ups and downs of our society started this snowball effect that has now turned into modern day America.
The Millionaire Next Door written by William Danko and Thomas J. Stanley illustrates the misconception of high luxury spenders in wealthy neighborhoods are considered wealthy. This clarifies that American’s who drive expensive cars, and live in lavish homes are not millionaires and financially independent. The authors show the typical millionaire are one that is frugal, and disciplined. Their cars are used, and their suits were purchased at a discount. As we read the book from cover to cover are misconceptions start to fade. The typical millionaire is very frugal in all endeavors and finds the best discounts possible. A budget is implemented daily, monthly, and annually for a typical millionaire. They live by the budget and are goal oriented. Living well below their means is crucial for a millionaire, and discovering ways to allocate time and money more efficiently. The typical millionaire next door is different than the majority of America presumes. Let’s first off mention what it is not. The typical millionaire is surprisingly not the individual with the lavish house worth a million dollars, owning multiple expensive cars, a boat, expensive clothes, and ultimately living lavishly. The individual is frugal and often looks for discounts for consumable goods. The book illustrates the typical millionaire in one simple word: frugal. It is shocking to believe that this is true, but it does make sense. To achieve financial independence is inherently more satisfying and important than accumulating wealth. According to the book the majority of these millionaires portray characteristics of being sacrificial, disciplined, persistent and frugal. As we grow up, we develop as people, and learn things from others around us. In these selections from East Asia, there’s different elements of growing up. From these stories and poems from Korea, China, and Japan, there is experience coming of age in more than one way. There are instances of young love, war, passing friendship, and overall life in these foreign places. Through these instances there is growing up and coming of age in places never experienced. From the literature of East Asia, the process of growing up and coming of age through the use of life lessons, metaphors, and imagery.
There is something to be said about learning a concept through reading compared to learning from experience because through one’s experiences, the concept is fully grasped and understood. This novel is multi-dimensional as we view the initial endogenous culture of Nazneen who was raised in rural Bangladesh, and can just barely read and write. Nazneen was always taught to accept her fate and not going against it and it is resembled by the quote, “What could not be changed must be borne. And since nothing could be changed, everything had to be borne. This principle ruled her life,” (Ali 4). Nazneen is accepting of her fate because this is what she was raised to believe, and when she is sent to London for an arranged marriage to Chanu, she must accept this as reality as well. Her husband Chanu, an educated man in his forties is constantly boasting his higher education, and the fact that he will receive a promotion from his job with the city council. Although Chanu is an educated man, he never receives the promotion, and this is because he constantly feels that he deserves better, and is never content with what he has. The short story, "The Rich Brother," by Tobias Wolff represents the same concept that everyday people all over the world encounter. This portrays how having siblings can be an enormous part of a persons life. The rivalry between siblings is often very competitive, but at the same time similar to magnets. When they are not connected it may seem they are independent and whole, but when examined closely it is obvious they are really relying on each other to function properly. Although Pete and Donald's life are separate and completely different, they are in fact very dependent on each other.
The Richest Man in Babylon was written by George S. Clason in 1926. It is a series of didactic, interwoven stories concerning personal financial habits set against the backdrop of ancient Babylon. Clason begins his novel by introducing Bansir, a chariot builder who wishes he had more disposable income. Distraught with the reality that he has accumulated no real surplus of wealth by his later years, he seeks out the advice from an old friend, Arkad- the richest man in Babylon. Through the remaining course of the novel, we are introduced to Clason’s words of wisdom for successful management of wealth, told vicariously through the various characters and scenarios set forth as the novel progresses.
“Babies”. Is a documentary made by the Thomas Balmés. It offers a window on the lives of four infants in four completely different cultures. This is not a usual kind of documentary; there are no narration, no subtitles and actual dialogue was very minimal. The film explores childhood rituals, enculturation, socialization and parenthood. I will try to explore each of these themes and try to make the case that behaviors, values and fears are learned not something congenital. It has, in my opinion, comparative perspectives and different methods in rearing children in different societies. It achieves this by cutting the scenes in certain ways to show the differences between these different children. For example, in one part of the film, both Bayarjargal (the Mongolian child) and Mari (the Japanese child) were playing with their pet cats and then the two scenes were edited to a shot of Ponijo (the Namibian child) looking interested in flies. The four children developed in somewhat similar ways. However, there are differences in their behaviors due to the enculturation by seeing their parents or siblings who were doing what they thought to be the norms and the obvious landscape in which they are brought up. Two of the kids were born in rural areas (Namibia and Mongolia) and two were born in urban areas (the United States and Japan). The mothers of these infants were interviewed and chosen to be in the film
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is about a dystopian society where human beings are manufactured, like products, as a means of income for the government. Though this type of society might seem unimaginable to us, the citizens of the World State are conditioned since “birth”. The term “birth” is used quite loosely because in this society, a process known as the “Bokanovsky Process” is implemented in their factory. During such a process the scientists shock a female fetus which makes it divide into 96 identical embryos which then develop into 96 identical human beings. A major theme in this story is freedom. In the novel, the citizens of the Savage Reservation have freedom as well as consequences. The citizens of the World State have predestined freedom which they come to accept after rigorous conditioning and sheer ignorance and because they know of no other life. John is freer than the citizens of the World State because he can fall in love, he has morals, and because he recognizes family.
The story of Midnight’s Children parallels the real history of India from 1910 to the declaration of the emergency in 1976. The reader experiences the story through the eyes of the main character, Saleem Sinai, who was born auspiciously at midnight of India’s Independence. Although Midnight's Children is a story with political overtones, its well-written multi-dimensional characters go on an even more riveting personal journey that sucks the readers into the story without thinking about the political context of the story. Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children is both the history of a sub-continent and the struggle of the Indian people for Independence, as well as a story of a boy's coming to age and a family’s saga.
In many cultures, childhood is considered a carefree time, with none of the worries and constraints of the “real world.” In “Araby,” Joyce presents a story in which the central themes are frustration, the longing for adventure and escape, and the awakening and confusing passion experienced by a boy on the brink of adulthood. The author uses a single narrator, a somber setting, and symbolism, in a minimalist style, to remind the reader of the struggles and disappointments we all face, even during a time that is supposed to be carefree.
