How To Evaluate The Choir Performance

I attended the District Choir Festival, held at Dixon Middle School on March 27, 2018. At this choir festival, I was able to watch and evaluate the Dixon Middle School Concert Choir and the Centennial Middle School Chamber Orchestra in their performances. Both choir’s sets began with the choirs filing on stage. Both choirs looked very uniform and professional, although the Dixon Concert Choir was considerably larger than the Centennial Middle School Chamber Orchestra. The Dixon Middle School Concert Choir proceeded to sing three songs; “Festive Alleluia”, a foreign song that had a title that sounded like “Etinee Tehr a Bax”, and “Rock me Lord”. As they sang, they stood tall and did not slouch. They were dressed in black clothes and angled their bodies towards the director. The Centennial Chamber Choir sang “Set me as a Seal”, “I’m going to sing till the spirit moves in my heart” and “Ave Maria”. They also stood tall, and unlike the Dixon choir had engaged faces and kept a strong energy throughout all of the songs.
The selection of songs that they chose to perform was very interesting. Several of the songs sung by the Dixon Choir were in different languages, and the first two songs were very free-flowing and gentle. The final song was similar to a gospel piece and included slides and other elements common in gospel songs. The sound itself was very unified in every piece, and although dynamics were not always employed, when they are used, it gave the song more power and was exceptional.
