Horror films are a unique genre that captivates its audience while scaring and entertaining them all at once. Behind any horror film is a great amount of thought and work in order to ensure their audience reacts in a certain way. There are ten basic steps to creating your own horror film, whether you are a beginner or a professional. First, you need to discover your main characters and a villain (the villain does not need to be a person). You need to find a factor that will distinguish your film from all the others. It is important to reflect on your own fears as inspiration in order to further relate to the audience. For example, you can use fear of the dark, heights, or a supernatural being. Next, watch other horror movies and read scripts
In slasher films, suspense is a big factor to what makes the movie intriguing and keeps the audience watching. Suspense causes people to be on the edge of their seat with anxiety and tension with being unsure of what will happen next. It’s the feeling of not knowing what’s in a room in a haunted house when you hear strange sounds coming from it. I feel the best-known film director for his suspenseful movies is Alfred Hitchcock. To create these movies there are many techniques used to create the suspenseful feeling in the movie. In the slasher movie Halloween I reviewed, many techniques were used that made the movie suspenseful to watch, such as the use of music, back lighting, hand held camera movement and point of view shots.
The genre of horror when associated to film, it reflects on a vast variety of issues but when examined for the cultural significance it is narrower to what the aim is. This review surveys multiple scholarly sources from different aspects of the purpose of horror films. This literature review justifies that horror is derived from the fear and guilt within our psychological minds. I will argue that the cultural significance of this genre relates back to the emotional appeals that are conjured up when viewing these films.
Until 1996, American horror films had become disgustingly sad, desperately looking for a kick-start, yawn-filled predictability was the best we could expect. Then finally, we were able to leap out of our seats and gawp at Scream. It’s witty, clever, dangerous and fresh. With that giving hope to the horror movie genre, it was adhered by an amazing sequel.
Most authors use 4 utilities to make a story entertaining. They use the setting, mood, tone, and the archetypes to keep the author entertained. Cinderella by Jacob and WilHelm Grimm and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Marsha Hatfield were both scary because they showed how the tone and mood affected the story, themselves, and the readers at the same time. The horror genre is spooky and unlike other genres, because they are written to scare audiences. In order to do that authors and directors have to change settings, establish tones and moods, and use archetypes that are darker than all other genres. Multiple authors make similar decisions to create archetypes, setting, mood, and tones that uphold the horror genre.
Hitchcock's Film Psycho Ever since the first horror movies were produced they have attracted huge audiences seeking to be scared, chilled and thrilled. Horror movies are so popular because the audience can get the adrenaline rush of being scared without actually putting themselves in danger, and also the audience ultimately get a rush of relief at the end of the film when the killer is killed. This is the same reason why people go on roller coasters because you get the adrenaline rush and then the relief when you get off. Also often horror movies are highly sexual films, and what's more it's a great excuse to hug your girlfriend! Horror movies started in the 1920's with German masterpieces of the silent era such as the ''Nosferatu'' directed by F.W Murneau (1922).
A horror film should therefore make the audience imagine the terror in order to maximise the fear factor. Many horror films nowadays use similar techniques to those used by Spielberg in the film ‘Jaws’. They use techniques such as framing and mise-en-scene in order to create something called safe space and unsafe space. Safe space is the space that the camera is looking at.
There are many different forms of horror work’s such as films, books, cosplay (costume play) and photography. Horror can be explained as something that brings an extreme sensation of fear, disgust, or terror. What is horror? Webster's Collegiate Dictionary gives the primary definition of horror as "a painful and intense fear, dread, or dismay." It stands to reason then that "horror fiction" is fiction that elicits those emotions in the reader. An example of a horror film is "The Shining", directed by Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick was a well-known director, producer, writer and cinematographer. His films comprised of unique, qualitative scenes that are still memorable but one iconic film in his collection of work is The Shining. Many would disagree and say that The Shining was not his best work and he could have done better yet, there are still those who would say otherwise. This film was not meant to be a “scary pop-up” terror film but instead, it turned into a spectacular psychological, horor film in which Kubrick deeply thought about each scene and every line.
Horror films are designed to frighten the audience and engage them in their worst fears, while captivating and entertaining at the same time. Horror films often center on the darker side of life, on what is forbidden and strange. These films play with society’s fears, its nightmare’s and vulnerability, the terror of the unknown, the fear of death, the loss of identity, and the fear of sexuality. Horror films are generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas, or dark locales with unknown human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about. These creatures can range from vampires, madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists, demons, zombies, evil spirits, satanic villains, the possessed, werewolves and freaks to the unseen and even the mere presence of evil.
A girl runs frantically through the woods trying to escape an axe wielding villain. The defenseless victim suddenly trips and collapses to the ground. The villain laughs wickedly as he lifts the axe above his head. The girl releases a final scream as the weapon quickly ends her life, causing the audience to go silent as they watch the villain drag away the lifeless body. Death, blood, guts, suspense, screaming, and terror are all just a few things to expect when watching a modern day horror film. What is horror? The effectiveness of Pompeii’s story by Robert Harris comes from the seemingly accurate description of ancient Roman civilization. The believability of Pompeii comes from the details of everyday Roman life that Robert Harris describes. Consequently, the end of the story is known by most readers yet Mr. Harris keeps the curiosity of the reader by unfolding events prior to the demise of Pompeii. Additionally, an eye witness account of the destruction of Pompeii remains to this day detailed by Pliny the younger an Roman senator (Damon). The relatability, accuracy
In any good horror story line you have to have certain aspects or traits to be categorized as a good horror story. What do the readers look for in a horror story you may ask. Well the primary ingredients for making a fearsome, shuddery, monstrous story are foreshadowing, fear, suspense, mystery/surprise and imagination of course. Without every single one of these elements, the reader would not be involved and wouldn 't even continue to finish reading the full story. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Phillip K. Dick and Edgar Allen Poe are only some of the great representations of who have constructed frightening yet delightful stories for us to read.
Would you rather be horrified beyond repair or thrilled to the point of no return? In horror, the main purpose is to invoke fear and dread into the audience in the most unrealistic way. Horror movies involve supernatural entities such as ghosts, vampires, teleportation, and being completely immortal. As thriller films are grounded in realism and involve more suspense, mystery, and a sense of panic. Though both genres will frighten the audience, it will happen in two different ways. Whether the horror thrills or the thriller horrifies, a scare is always incorporated.
SPEAKER CREDIBILITY: I love horror flicks, in fact I’d rather watch a scary movie than any other genre there is. There’s something about the spine tingling chillers that get me excited and wanting more blood. I am charismatically enticed by horror flicks and simultaneously disgusted by them. I have been watching in various forms monsters chase young victims through dark homes and alleys, with knifes, chainsaws, drills, axes, and other weapons for years. The violence is so foreseeable, that I often know when the bad guys will appear, who will die and in what order. The arrangements of killer pictures are familiar, but nonetheless disconcerting. At night, after watching a horror film from, I switch on an extra light to help ease my discomfort, at times I've even resorted to sleeping with my mother and putting on a happy cartoon.
