Building Respect “True public safety requires a collaboration between law enforcement and the community” (Hodges). Our local and state law enforcement works so hard to keep our communities safe, and the people of the communities should have a lot of respect for their effort. We can build respect for local law enforcement by welcoming police officers into our school, having social gatherings, using social media, and by having fundraisers. Building respect for our local and state law enforcement is very important.
The first way our local communities can build respect for our local and state law enforcement is by welcoming police officers into our local schools. The local schools can have police officers come for visits such as assemblies or

One example of a social gathering that we can do is having meals. An example of a kind of meal we can have is breakfasts in the mornings. We could also have dinners in the evenings. Another example of a social gathering that will build respect for our local and state law enforcement is by going to bingos. Some bingos could be held in the day or night time. A final example of a social gathering that is open to the community and builds respect for our local and state law enforcement is by having a walk through of the station. During this walk through we could meet our local police officers. Also during the walk through we could have a look at the equipment and police cars. I feel if we get to know our local police officers our respect will enhance …show more content…
There can be fundraisers at local schools. The first type of fundraiser the schools can do is selling pizzas. The second type of fundraiser the schools can do is book fairs. There can also be non school school fundraisers. One example of a no school fundraiser is car washes. Another example is standing outside of Walmart and asking for donations. The third type of fundraiser that can build respect for our local and state law enforcement is by having a game day at the police station. The police officers can set up a dunk booth. The police officers could also rent a bouncy house for the children. Fundraisers would increase a lot of respect for our local and state law enforcement from both children and
nursing homes or helping to paint a neighborhood school. Since we are a nonprofit organization, we rely on fundraisers for our funding. Some of the fundraisers we have are car washes and selling donuts, cookies and pizza.
Law enforcement agencies nationwide have repeatedly been shaken by controversy and forced to make undesirable concessions. Has law enforcement failed to maintain the high standards required by the profession? The cost of public trust is high. It increases each time faith must be regain. Historically, law enforcement agencies throughout the nation have experienced periods of low confidence in communities preceding episodes deemed to be a breach of trust.
At some point in our lives, everybody eventually comes in contact with a law enforcement officer, some people for different reasons. Law enforcement officers work around the clock to keep citizens safe. Many people do not know a lot of things about law enforcement, some of those will be discussed. Those topics are agency administration, issues with law enforcement in today’s society, and law enforcement history.
Along with gaining the support of law enforcement officers in the community policing effort, members of the community must also take a stake and become an integral part of the movement. A study noted by Lord, Kuhns and Friday (2009), researchers found that more than 45 million people over the age of 15 encountered the police in some fashion. Of those encounters, one quarter involved members making first contact with police officers. Unfortunately, citizen encounters with law enforcement with negative connotations were more influential to decrease satisfaction with the police than were positive encounters to increase satisfaction (Lord, Kuhns, & Friday, 2009).
Community policing allows officers to be actively involved on the streets alongside the community. Their focus is not only to solve crimes but to interact with the people in their neighborhood, establish a rapport with them. This initiative has gained popularity within recent years as the police and leaders of the community pursue more significant ways to promote public safety and to enrich the quality of life of their community members. The police and the citizens often come in contact with each other for a multitude of reasons other than criminal purposes. Police officers often engage in community service by providing an abundance of information for those in need, and they offer educational services at schools and outreach
Every action the law enforcement community makes should leave a positive, everlasting effect on the community they serve. The negative view of law enforcement should not be the actions of a few but the unseen actions of many. The bad apples of law enforcement always make the news and the headlines, but the officer who went above and beyond to affect a family for the rest of their lifetime, goes unnoticed.
There has always been a love-hate relationship between the public and the police. When called upon to help, they can be something sent from God, but when they are writing tickets, or taking a friend to jail, the view changes from a savior to a presence that is unwanted and often hated. An effort to improve the public view of law enforcement is being attempted by many departments. Using different styles of policing techniques, mainly community based policing, has proved to be the best way to improve the image of law enforcement.
In order to have effective policing I believe integrity and ethics play a huge part in helping build trust within communities. Sound conduct by police improves community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder. There are three ways that police departments can strengthen community relationships just by training officers about procedural justice, bias reduction, and racial reconciliation. If we implement these concepts, we can create an environment in which effective partnerships between the police and citizens can flourish.
Hence, there are obstacles and challenges that must be overcome to achieve the mission in maintaining a collaborating effort to promote a systemic partnership for the good of society. The relationship between law enforcement and the community is an essential component which needs to be a priority within the entire field of law enforcement. In response to preserving a positive affiliation with the neighborhoods law enforcement are serving, many progression measures have been implemented. For instance, in the Los Angeles Police Department is formally governed by the Board of Police Commissioners which includes a five-person civilian body with each member appointed by the mayor (I.A.C.P., 2015).
This police activity is composed of difficult decisions and activities, which include the discretionary use of authority and prevention of crimes by a strong police presence. It also involves maintaining good relations within the community. Cops, at times, have to reach out to citizens to help them do their jobs. Examples include obtaining information in trying to solve a crime and helping to maintain order. About one month ago, we had some individuals come into the store and walk out with some expensive merchandise. The security cameras were unable to read the license plate on the car that they drove off in. Luckily they had work done on their vehicle in the automotive department, and when the police arrived to gather information about it, I was able to aid them in tracking them down because we had their license plate on file. If I am able to help law enforcement in any way, I do so. I know that working in law enforcement is challenging in this day in age, and the levels of trust are not where they should be, so whatever I can do to show other people that cops are there to help, I take advantage of the
To conclude, Community policing represents a major development in the history of American law enforcement, but the extent to which this approach is a success and dominates contemporary policing remains a source of debate. In my point of view, community policing is good for communities. It has challenged the traditional concept of the police as crime-fighters by drawing attention to the complexities of the police role and function. In addition to the police officer hard work; citizens can also make a difference and contribute to make neighborhoods a better place to live. For instance, citizens can hold community meetings to talk about concerns and agree on solutions help organize healthy activities for children in your neighborhood, join or starting a neighborhood crime watch program, and talk to your community police officers and share information and concerns.
Does anyone under the age of 25 show any respect to police officers? It’s a question that has been coming up in political debates everywhere as of late. Most people have been saying that the police are to blame for the problems. However, in this article, William Grigg shows how the true problem lies in the lack of respect for authority. As a result, everyone has turned against the police and only the image the public wants see has been shown on the news.
We need the children to grow up and have a more positive outlook on law enforcement. A lot of programs are not used as often as they should because of budget issues and pressures (Massey, 2014). Funding is a problem, but maybe cuts can be done elsewhere or the community can work together and fund it. The uniting factor within a community has been lacking over the years. A strategy called Community-oriented policing needs to be conducted more often.
The majority of peace officers are committed to the profession they chose. They view the career as a calling, a dedication to perform a public service to their community. Being a police officer requires one to continually strive for perfection, but there is no such thing as a perfect cop. What makes a good cop turn bad? Many factors can attribute to police corruption, but the question that should be asked is if it can be stopped. Although police agencies have progressed greatly from its beginning, police corruption is the black mark that will forever leave a stain of embarrassment within an organization.
Understanding the issue is just part of what’s needed. The purpose of the section is to identify a solution, or as may be the case, solutions. So, the question here is what can we do to improve the relationship between the police and the citizens. Over the years there has been many books written and studies conducted, all in an effort to find the best way to improve police and citizen relationships. To do this we must look at all available information. According to The Study Circles Resource Center’s Protecting Communities, Serving the Public: Police and residents building relationships to work together (2000), “Bring police and community together. We need to meet not just when there is a crisis or a big crime. We should do things to build relationships that are not so full of conflict. Then it would be easier to work together. We can build respect and trust for one another when we make time to meet with and learn about each other. This is the only way to do it.
