Sometimes one can wonder if a trend impacted pop culture or if it was pop culture that started a trend. It can seem that most of the time it is a combination of both. It appears our culture is drawn to viral videos and trends. This may be because by taking a few minutes of our day to watch what is popular, we are able to connect with thousands (or even millions) of people. One can analyze our pop culture by examining what has become popular in Youtube culture as it has 1 billion active users each month (The Huffington Post), making it present in the life of most internet users. With an estimated number of 300 hours of new content uploaded to Youtube per minute (expandedramblings) it should be no surprise that many Youtubers try to copy popular …show more content…
Not only were videos with people completing the #polishmountain challenge spreading across Youtube, they also were posted by many Instagram accounts. This connects to pop culture because it shows how fans can create an impact. If fans did not recreate her video then it would not reached mainstream media, showing unrecognizable people’s influence on pop culture. Soon, news outlets started writing articles on this craze. For example, the websites Popsugar.com, cosmopolitan.co.uk, Inquisitr.com, and dailymail.co.uk all have articles on Cristine’s 100+ coats of nail polish video and #polishmountain. Some sites and people were critical of Cristine and the craze. The Daily Mail claimed that Cristine had, “Too much time on her hands,” (dailymail) even though she works full-time as a “crime statistics data analyst” (@nailogical twitter). To be fair, the 12 hours she spent to complete her polish mountain is excessive and if the video did not become viral, it would have probably been considered a waste of time. On the other hand, it shows her dedication to her fans. This dedication relates to pop culture because at this time it’s popular for people to only support or dedicate their time to those who are willing to show their support back and dedicate time to their fans. With so many giving entertainers on the …show more content…
It transformed from the polish mountain challenge to the 100+ layers challenge. The 100+ layer challenge had an extreme variety of videos under its name with people putting things on their body or face. From “100 layers of hair extensions” to “100 LAYERS OF CANDLE WAX ON MY FACE AND HANDS!” to “100 LAYERS OF KYLIE LIP KIT!” to “100 LAYERS OF FOUNDATION [makeup]” to “100 Layers of Fake Tan!” and to many more absurd 100 layer videos. A lot of famous Youtubers jumped onto the trend and faced the challenge in their own way. For example, Jenna Marbles (16 million subscribers), Joey Graceffa (6 million subscribers), and WolfieRaps (2 million subscribers) all made videos doing the challenge. Like the polish mountain craze, its spin off also caught the attention of new outlets and had many articles written about it. This trend astonished people. Many never imagined that people would spend time making videos like these or wasting time watching them. I do not think anyone would have guessed that this would be the next craze but after it happened it all seemed to make sense that it became popular. Like past trends, this one has an absurdity to it that people find humorous. In addition, the idea of 100 layers of things is intriguing to many and some people think of the videos are satisfying to watch. It is popular to try to connect to people online and by creating similar connect they are creating a community. This community of
How exactly do social trends start and how do they become such huge phenomena? The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell explains how ideas, trends, and behaviors reach a “tipping point” (Gladwell, 2000). According to Gladwell, a tipping point is the peak of a particular phenomenon. The Tipping Point describes exactly how health epidemics, fashion trends, television shows, products, etc. become popular and last for elongated periods of time. In this summary, I will attempt to reiterate what Gladwell means in reference to “how little things make big differences.”
In comparing the sixties and the nineties, my first thought was how much popular culture has changed since then and how different society is today. The strange thing is, the more I tried to differentiate between them, the more similarities I found. Both the sixties and the nineties were about youth, creativity, free-thinking, and expression. With the nineties coming to a close and the popularity of anything ?retro," I decided to compare the fashions, people, music, and issues that defined pop culture in the 1960?s and its influence on pop culture in the 1990?s.
In addition to the 23 albums (counting soundtracks and separate US and UK releases) released during the band's life (1960-1970) there have been more than 150 compilations, recorded interviews and videos issued. Hundreds of books have been written about their personal lives, their music, and their influence on pop culture and rock
In the summer of 2012, the full music video of “Gangnam Style” was uploaded onto YouTube and was immediately a sensation, receiving over 500,000 hits on its first day and racking up millions of more hits in a matter of a week. By the end of the year 2012, the song had topped the music charts of more than thirty countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Being the first ever YouTube video to reach the milestone of one billion hits, the song took the social media by storm. These staggering statistics indicate how “Gangnam Style” was able to achieve a tipping point, thus igniting an epidemic. What made it go viral? The two main reasons responsible for the cause are the Power of Context and the Stickiness Factor.
Today, pop culture shapes America and other countries alike. Influencers of pop culture include actors, musicians, writers, and politicians, mostly from those still living. However, many others have shaped our modern culture, even from days long past. One of them, William Shakespeare, is one of the most famous playwrights of all time. In our day, he continues to influence our culture through his poems and plays. Many of his phrases people use commonly, without a thought given to the creator of them. He also made many words through his legacy of playwriting. Shakespeare has influenced culture through his plays, his clever wordplay, and words he added to the English dictionary.
The number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2012 was 6,488. The number of American women murdered by a current or past partner during that time was 11,766 almost twice the amount of people we lost to war. However, this does not just affect women. 1 in 4 women will be victims of severe violence in their lifetime, but 1in 7 men will be, too. In this paper, I propose that popular culture contributes to the high rate of domestic abuse in the United States. I will prove this by analyzing popular music, movies, and even looking at the news in today’s culture. I will make connections with today’s culture and the high rate of domestic violence in the United States. Then I will talk about how popular culture can change
Our society today is extremely different than it was a hundred years ago. People don’t just dress differently; they act differently and see things from new perspectives. Life will never go back to the way it used to be. But how did our culture change so much? What happened in our past that brought society to this point? The answer lies in the 1960s. Various aspects in pop culture during this time period caused American society to become what it is today.
1) I agree that pop culture is always changing and that the young generation are the ones who are mainly in control of it. The reason I believe this is because there are new videos and memes that become popular that younger people are always coming up with. Something that I had a question about was the concept that pop culture was a part of capitalism because that didn’t make much sense to me seeing as though pop culture is just what’s popular at the time and not controlled by higher status people.
Music videos began to rise in the 1980 's and ever since then have had a long lasting effect on both the music and television industries. One of music videos most groundbreaking successes was that of MTV, which had a monolithic appearance in the cable TV industry and in American culture. However, MTV as a channel is now that of a dying one. The music video industry continues to thrive due to the developments, expansions, and improvements in technology over the years. In this Post-Network Era, different methods of distribution, for example, YouTube, has allowed there to be a much growth in regards to music videos. Music videos are no longer made by just big television network corporations. They are also made by regular people that can get their
The diffusion of innovation theory is a multifaceted tool that can be used for many purposes. It allows for a look at as to why an innovation succeeds or why it fails and it can also tell you how that innovation spread and to who it spread to over a certain period of time. The culmination of a life time of work by Everett M. Rogers who is the leader in the field of innovation diffusion and utilized by many that gathers most of the information needed through surveys. When applied to the field of the spread of media through the internet it can give a picture as to the types of things people find entertaining and it can also map how that media diffuses into society.
Popular culture is often dismissed as frivolous, unimportant or simply mindless entertainment, both by media critics and by academics. However, it is important to examine and think critically about popular culture and what it can tell us about the society that we live in. In the specific case of the relationship between gender and popular culture, popular culture is informed by the way gender is structured and the structure of gender is, in part, reinforced by popular culture.
The Effects of Popular Culture on Society Popular Culture is music, dance, theatre, film,T.V., poetry and Art which is enjoyed by a wide group of people. Some people would argue that popular culture in the 1960's cause harm. Other people however argued that other factors brought harm and change to society. Some people would argue that music would cause harm because of the lyrics in pop songs. Lyrics like 'Lets spend the night together' by The Rolling Stones, influenced young people to have casual sex.
Popular culture embodies the beliefs, ideas, perspectives, attitudes, and images of various cultures. Popular culture is heavily influenced by mass media, key celebrity figures, movies and related entertainment, as well as sports and news. However, in the past decade, the Internet and social media has come to be a significant influence on pop culture.
Popular culture has given people the opportunity for people to have a chance to shine, and many have had their lives changed. For example, when American Idol had launched in 2002, the winner, Kelly Clarkson, had her chance to shine for the entire time she was competing and eventually won the competition. Her success provided her with the ability perform not only nationwide, but also worldwide. But how exactly does popular culture enable Filipino Americans to have a chance at success? In order to answer that question, one must look for the means which drive them to popular culture. Although Filipino Americans were involved in the community, nevertheless they chose to get involved in popular culture, which gives them success. Through popular
Pop culture is a reflection of social change, not a cause of social change” (John Podhoretz). It encompasses the advertisements we see on T.V, the clothes we wear, the music we listen too, and it’s the reason Leonardo DiCaprio has not won an Oscar yet. It defines and dictates the desires and fears of the mainstream members of society; and it is so ingrained into our lives that it has become as natural as breathing. Moreover, adults never even bat an eyelash at all the pop culture and advertising that surrounds them since it has become just another part of everyday life. Pop culture is still somewhat seen as entertainment enjoyed by the lower class members of society; but pop culture standards change over time. A notable example of this is the sixteenth century author, William Shakespeare, since his works were considered pop culture, entertainment that could be enjoyed by everyone, but now they are considered literary classics. While pop culture encompasses most aspects of our lives, its influence is most obvious through each generations reaction to media,
