Technology has a major impact in our society today and the way we interact with each other. Relationships are affected everyday by technology and the way people use it in their personal lives. Technology can increase the amount of conversation people have with each other. Technology can cause barriers with communication if misunderstood. Lastly, technology can create relationships that would have never been possible without it. Technology has effects on relationships, the three main being, increasing communication, causing in person barriers and also creating relationships.
First, technology effects relationships by increasing the amount of communication people have with one another. Technology can be convenient when separated and not physically with the other person in the relationship. This is also more convenient if there is a quick question rather than having to wait until the two people see each other again. Another reason this increases the amount of communication is because most people are more confident over the phone then when actually talking in person. This allows them to communicate more and not to be as shy when having a conversation. Technology has many effects on relationships, one

Although technology can be an amazing source of communication it can also be a destructive source to a relationship. One of the ways this could apply would be if one of the people in the relationship is always playing on their phone, this causes distraction and is not respectful to the person that is trying to spend time together. Another way this could cause a barrier would be texting and the confusion with no being face to face with someone. When you text someone they are not seeing your facial expressions or your tone, which could cause confusion and arguments if taken the wrong way. Technology in relationships could cause miscommunication and cause barriers if not
Technology has advanced immensely in the last 50 years. We are living in the digital age where technology and social media have become a part of our everyday routine. Majority of the nation owns a cell phone equipped with the ability to text. Since technology has become a very convenient way of communication, it has even managed to change human interactions and become apart of relationships. Texting limits relationships because its simply impossible to express emotion the way you can in person. Physically communicating and connecting with a person will never compare to texting or any social media.
“Habits in relationships,” “build their relationship,” “strengthen a relationship,” are all examples of how Wortham uses it to show the importance of technology between two people. Many couples work different hours, which could lead to them not seeing as often as they would like or need. Technology is an excellent way to keep in touch with people, whether that be your significant other or a distant family member. Building and stabilizing a relationship can be difficult face-to-face, imagine trying to do so when you live two hours apart. Technology lets couples regularly speak on everyday
This is in contrast to Turkle who talks about how it is ruining our communication skills, Wortham states that technology is doing just the opposite and bettering our connections with others. Wortham, even though her article is a bit shorter than Turkle’s, still is able to get across the idea that without the technology that we have today, she wouldn’t be able to have the relationship she has with her boyfriend. This goes for everyone who is in a long distance relationship, or those who are far away from their families. The use of video chats, texting, and calling improves communication for those who we can’t see on a daily basis. Wortham believes that without these options of technology she would not still be in the relationship with her current boyfriend, or if she was in the relationship still they would not be as close as they are with the use of the video chat dates they have.
This makes kids forget how to socialize with one another and not know how to carry on a conversation. Along with socialization becoming obsolete, technology causes addiction, and the replacement of jobs throughout America. The reasons why technology is impacting society in a negative way is how people are forgetting how to socialize and becoming antisocial, automatics are taking the place of jobs for humans, and the internet is making millions addicted along with more mental health problems.
Technology Is What You Make It The articles “How Computers Change the Way We Think” by Sherry Turkle and “Electronic Intimacy” by Christine Rosen argue that technology is quite damaging to society as a whole and that even though it can at times be helpful it is more damaging. I have to agree and disagree with this because it really just depends on how it is used and it can damage or help the user. The progressing changes in technology, like social media, can both push us, as a society, further and closer to and from each other and personal connections because it has become a tool that can be manipulated to help or hurt our relationships and us as human beings who are capable of more with and without technology. Technology makes things more efficient and instantaneous.
In Jenna Wortham's article "I Had A Nice Time With You Tonight. On The App.", she argues that today's technology is a great way to keep our long and short distance relationships stable, I disagree. Though technology is a great way to stay in contact with our loved ones, it can ultimately make people forget how to interact face to face and ruin our relationships. "Using an application in place of real-world,face-to-face interactions is have a detrimental effect on how we prioritize offline communication and, potentially, on our ability to interact even when we aren't relying on technology as a mediator."
Although the idea that texting and online communication is weakening our ties to actually being able to have face to face communication is common, it is not so true and I agree with Stobierski in that this social form has both positives and negatives, but the repercussions of texting and online communication ultimately outweigh the bright side.
Although one-on-one relationships have broadened across the world, many individuals struggle to keep the ones in person in tact over their relationships over technology. It has become harder for people to really feel the connection in person verse to when they are talking over technology. People are too consumed with their phones all day they forget to pay attention to the ones who are
Relationships can be unsuccessful and have difficulties from technology because there is a lack of face to face communication. Conversations work best when the two people speak in person
In our culture, technology serves as an instrumental aspect of our lives. Regardless of where you turn, you are constantly surrounded by technology. Whether it is our cellphones that spend their entire lives within an arm’s reach of us, our computers, or the newest wave of technology that is moving us towards tablets, much of our life is lived in front of screens. With these advancements comes the notion that there is an application that can solve every life problem we may have. Thanks to technological advancements like text messaging or social media networks, there are plenty of ways a relationship can be sustained for a significant period without personal contact. Unfortunately, most people have a misconstrued belief that these resources are a great substitute for personal time in relationships that have periods of long distance separation. Scientists and relationship experts debate the usefulness of technology in relationships and many do not share the above mentioned belief. They debate if technology helps sustain relationship or helps ruin relationships. Just as social media can be a great way of keeping up with others while they are away, it can also be used to spy on others and assume an intimate connection between anyone who posts on your significant other’s wall often.
Social networking and other social technology allows for interactions to occur between friends and family regardless of their location. While people remain social through communicating at a constant rate, the essence of face-to-face interactions is in part affected. In romantic relationships, open and honest communication with one’s partner is critical to the trust and development of the relationship. Young adults use social technology such as the Internet and mobile phones on a daily basis to maintain their relationships. Due to the miscommunication that often occurs from not a lack of face-to-face interactions, social technology shapes the way romantic relationships function. Therefore, social technology impacts romantic relationships through a technological determinist outlook, leading to trust and dissatisfaction issues through the Internet and mobile devices, thus negatively changing face-to-face relationships. Different rhetoric of online communication shapes and transforms problems such as deception in online dating, social monitoring and control on social networking sites, creates negative interpretations and implications of text messages, and thus creates a new image and mindset of romantic relationships.
Over the last century, information technology, such as the Internet, has brought our society forward and helps us get through life more efficiently and conveniently. In addition, it helps making global communication easier and faster as compared to hand-written mails that may take days if not weeks to reach its intended recipient. However, with such luxury and convenience, there is a debate whether the way we currently interact with fellow human beings with the help of technology is good or bad to our personal relationships. The Internet has increased the amount of communication globally, yet ironically the very technology that helps us increase our communication hinders our ability to socialize effectively in real life and create a healthy interpersonal relationship.
Technology in itself is not damaging to us. In fact, many forms of technology help us in our everyday lives. Even so, practically every problem that stems from technology can also be related to overuse of electronics. For example, looking around at a restaurant, a person might find almost every young or old patron on their cell phone. This takes away from dinner conversation and can be frustrating to try to talk to someone who is playing on their cell phone. Being on your phone all the time can also cause romantic relationships to fall apart in certain cases. Another way it is harmful to social interactions is through social networking sites. While social networking has the ability to reconnect old friends, see what family and friends are up to, and stay informed, it also has a dark side. Problems with romantic or even platonic relationships can arise from something as small as who your friends are on Facebook or whom you follow on Twitter. A more likely situation is that romantic relationships could face turmoil if one person finds out that the other has been talking to someone else privately. Under certain circumstances, one partner could think that the other is cheating on them.
Technology has improved our way of living. Due to many advances of technology most Americans will not be able to live without it. The most impactful revolution that has occurred to the social life of a regular American is the Digital Revolution. The revolution brought new ways to communicate. With Social Media Americans can now connect to friends and family members across the world with ease. Many mediums of communication have been born out of the Digital Revolution.
Technology has impacted our society in a positive way it has also brought on many challenges which lead to loss of human interaction. Technology has allowed many people to do everything they need with just the touch of a button. This takes the pressure off of people to remember important numbers and dates. It has given humans the availability and opportunity to connect with friends and family all over the world, which makes it easier to maintain long-lasting relationships and stay connected no matter the
