'How School Taught Me I Was Poor'

Social injustice is a true and real issue kids and adults are facing in the world today. It is sad to see what children and their parents go through on a day to day basis whether that is financial struggles or economic discrimination against them.
Several real examples of economic discrimination and real problems children face were shown in the article “How School Taught Me I Was Poor” (How School, 1). Some of the examples that prominently stood out to me were; a quote from the child narrator starting, “Because of Ricky, I felt self-conscious about doing the family tree assignment.”. Another quote stated was, “. ..My mom says you're divorced and you don’t have a father and you are poor, white trash.”(How School 1). To me it is hard to fathom the fact that children as young as 8 years of age are bullying their peers because of their economic standing in the world. The information these young kids know must be the works of their parents, therefore to me it's hard to understand why parents with young kids talk about their sons and daughters peers in negative and condescending ways leading for their child to …show more content…

In the article “Thank you, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes a boy attempt to rob a larger women of her purse. The boy falls down and the women grabs him and doesn't let him run. But she sees how dirty he is and realized he's poor and probably does not have a family. She takes him under her wing cleans him and tries to teach him right from wrong. This story to me shows the good people have in their hearts and how not to discriminate against the poor or certain kinds of criminals (minor offenses) before knowing why and knowing their background. This women in the story went through similar events in her life so when she was faced with another person going through what she went through she was able to put all the being poor and being dirty aside and help the young man
