In the Shakespeare's play Hamlet is not the tragic hero, Polonius is. Polonius is the loving father that died for his false convictions .Hamlet on the other hand is the main antagonist of the story and is the cause of all the calamities. With these two characters Shakespeare knowledges and criticizes the fundamental dilema with how royal families function. How innocent people are left in the crossfire of royal feud.

Throughout the play Polonius is an odd character. For the most part it seems like Polonius was just a placeholder or a person of importance. However, Polonius has two attributes and that most characters do not have in Hamlet. The first noticeable characteristic is his compassion for his children and their well-being. Before his son, Larize left Polonius councils him. He augers him what not to do and what to do, and he also counsels his daughter. The second attribute that puts him above the rest is his conviction to follow through on his beliefs for his family. No one else is more willing to risk not only their career for someone else, but risk their life for someone else. One key difference between Hamlet from being a hero is his absolute lack of empathy for others. There are only two things Hamlet truly cares about and that is power and revenge that it. All collateral damage that comes from acting does not matter to Hamlet. Furthermore the one time he lets his anger boil over is when he kills Polonius. Then after he did the devilish deed Hamlet then tries to hide the body and hide what he has done. This leads to Ophelia to commit suicide and Larize to seek vengeance identically to how hamlet seeks vengeance for his father.
