One example of the theme that fear and suspicion are infectious and can produce a mass hysteria that destroys public order and rationality is portrayed in the play The Crucible, when Abigail and Betty falsely accuses many people of witchcraft. “I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! Betty, too: I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil!” (Miller 595). This quote shows how many people Abigail and Betty accused at the beginning, which would cause fear in the town, as a result to these false accusations, there have been many arrests for witchcraft as Danforth says in act 3, “And do you know that near to four hundred are in the jails from Marblehead to Lynn, and upon my signature?” (Miller 632) which shows that the jails have been filled up with those accused of witchcraft, mainly out of fear. …show more content…
