Donald Trump: How One Man Can Ruin American Politics Policies and statements that may seem like boastful, fraudulent, shenanigans to educated, politically sound Democrats and Republicans alike are nothing but the truth in the mind of Donald Trump, and can be seen on his campaign website, www.donaldjtrump.com. Backed by supporters that seem blind to anyone in the outgroup, Trump is sweeping the polls and booths in nearly every state he visits. Evidently, the stark contrast between what most people believe Americans stand for and Trump’s success via promoting just the opposite begs the question: How can he gravitate so many would-be moderate Republican voters so far to the right of the political spectrum? Aside from his grandiose, overtly blunt …show more content…
personality and pre-political fame, the answer lies in persuasion from faulty argument -- more specifically, sweeping generalization, red herring, and damning of the source.
An onslaught of direct or indirect of sweeping generalization is the basis of what Trump uses to sway people his way-- it is how he gets people to back the same things he does, the engine of his campaign. As seen on his campaign website, trump labels illegal immigrants as both rapist and murderers explaining, “In recent weeks, the headlines have been covered with cases of criminals who crossed our border illegally only to go on to commit horrific crimes against Americans. Most recently, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, with a long arrest record, is charged with breaking into a 64 year-old woman’s home, crushing her skull and eye sockets with a hammer, raping her, and murdering her.” This fear mongering consequently instills a racist view of all Mexican immigrants into Trump’s supporters. The generalized criminal …show more content…
image of a murderous, no good Mexican is what those who rally behind Trump see, not a logical, political reason to secure the southern border. More so, the generalization of Mexican immigrants being the bane to American society instills a groupthink originated, almost Nazi like obsession with hating the designated scapegoat. To worsen things, Trump uses a similar approach to Muslim people across the world. To be put simply, he manages to generalize all Muslims into the terrorist persona. For example, on December 7th, 2015, Trump called for “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on”. Thus, the generalization of all Muslim people as threats to the country's welfare is nothing more than a dangerous, fear mongering scheme to gain support. In social politics, someone as powerful as Trump can trigger a chain reaction of countrywide generalization, and consequential groupthink and scapegoats have historically resulted in catastrophe. To heighten matters, Trump also has illogical arguments that are consistently backed by his supporters. Recently, Trump has dubbed global warming as a concept “created by and for the Chinese to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive”. Despite the fact that this notion is simply not true, he fails to back up his claim with any evidence, statistics, or even a co-sign from an actual scientist. Often jumping to conclusions after offering little or no proof, what Trump says is concise and hard to directly oppose due to his unwavering stubbornness. Climate change aside, Trump has used circular arguments and quick conclusions in order to promote his rallies and supporter showout. For example, he once cited that the majority of people agreed with him because his rally supporters cheered him on- only to conclude that his rally supporters cheered him on because everyone supports him. The circular arguing makes it hard for people to consider him wrong, especially those who already support him. Although Trump has reasoned that his claims are simply him going against the long played out political correctness of American politics, what he is doing to minority groups, undecided voters, and even his own party is extremely harmful.
Yes, trump is blissfully completely out of the political correctness spectrum, but he fails to see that he is completely off the morally correct spectrum also. Trump thinks without acting, and consistently says hurtful things with no remorse. While he may call it whatever he thinks; toughness, honesty, or “frankly not having enough time for political correctness”, the majority of America sees his antics as either rude, racist, or both: all attributes that are quite hard to confuse with political correctness. More often than not, while exercising his right to be politically incorrect, Trump damns the source of his opposition, whether it be his opponents, the media, or a political
party. More than once has he attacked his adversaries with off subject, insulting sentiments, and more than once has it caught the attention of his supporters. For example, he discredited Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for not being able to satisfy her husband and former president, Bill Clinton. Similarly, he has attacked Jeb Bush for his brother's administration, as well as Ben Carson for his “mediocre” surgical abilities. In a debate on national television, Trump even attacked the physical looks of Carly Fiorina exclaiming, “Look at that face, Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president. I mean, she's a woman, and I'm not s'posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?” In a political sense, attacking other candidates for things outside of politics is a way to lessen their voter’s faiths, as well as to make oneself seem more capable simply because of character or physicality. It can easily be concluded that Donald Trump's use of fallacious argument is not only harmful to politics, but to the American people as a whole. Despite tainting the election process, the harmful views of trump can taint a whole generation of young people’s political views and means to validate their arguments. The next generation of Americans cannot live in a world where Trump has banned entire religions, and damned an ethnicity of people in the eyes of everyone. He has to be beaten banned, or impeached before he can further his damage.
In, “The Lie Factory” by Jill Lepore, she examines what attracts a voter to a candidate. “You can put on a fight (‘he likes a good hot battle, with no punches pulled’), or you can put on a show (‘he likes the movies; he likes mysteries; he likes fireworks and parades’): ‘So if you can’t fight, PUT ON A SHOW! And if you put on a good show, Mr. and Mrs. America will turn out to see it.” (Whitaker qtd. in Lepore) In the case of Trump, he combines both fighting and showmanship to create a dangerously alluring combination. The more ostentatious he can be, the more support he earns. Every hateful remark, every verbal jab is given media coverage, until Trump is spoken and known by everyone, becoming an almost mythical figure. He repeats the same mantra, everyone is bad, and I am the victim. I am rich so I will make you rich. I will make America great again. Every day, there is a new more vicious and personal attack, yet he has desensitized us to the point in which we no longer abhor such comments, but instead laugh, and find comedy and entertainment. To some, even acceptance and
As has been demonstrated by Ochoa and Rios’s findings, labelings’ repercussions are negative and assign expectations that in turn limit life opportunities. In Gonzales and Tobar’s books, we see the over reactions and distorted views that labeling migrants as criminals creates. The repercussions of this is to further propagate fear to quell dissent within the migrant population.
What would it be like to wake up everyday knowing you would get bullied, mistreated, and/or abused just because of where you were born? Discrimination still exists! “Discrimination remains and there is an increase in hate crimes against Hispanics, Latinos and Mexican-Americans, as one of the perceived symbols of that discrimination, the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence, nears completion. Instead of pulling together in these difficult times, we may see a greater polarization of attitudes” (Gibson). But why are hate crimes increasing towards Latin and Hispanic aliens and what types of discrimination are occurring against them? Understanding violence towards the Hispanic and Latin alien is divided into three main classes; the difference between legal and illegal aliens, the attacks and effects, and the point of view of different people towards aliens.
Is Donald J. Trump the cause, or the effect? Many politicians agree with Shelby Steele’s point of view which states, “Donald Trump is not the cause, he is the effect.” I believe Trumps election was the effect, of an endless list of political and economic disasters; hence making the political and economic disasters the cause.
Trump has said and believes that all immigrants that enter the United States are bad and are set out to endanger the lives of all individuals
To explain this, people have to reflect back to the way the Mexican Americans were being singled-out in the 1940s. For instance, Mexican Americans were said to be criminals rather than adolescents that used a style of clothing as a way to express themselves. The newspapers and police officers were discriminating against the Mexican Americans by implying they were criminals. To illustrate this, the discrimination in the 1940s by the Los Angeles paper wrote an article explaining how to “de-zoot” a “zoot suiter” the Los Angeles paper wrote in great detail how to remove the piece of clothing known as zoot suits and how to assault Mexican Americans (People & Events: The Zoot Suit Riots of 1943). Comparatively Mexican Americans are going through a similar case of discrimination by the elected Republican candidate, that is running for the 2016 presidency. In his presidential annocement speech, Donald trump said, “When Mexico sends their people they are not sending their best they are not sending, you. You, they are sending their people who have lots of problems. They are bringing those problems here, they are bringing drugs, they are bringing crime, they are rapist and some I assume they are good people” (Donald Trump Doubles down on Calling Mexicans 'rapists' - CNN Video.). Statements like this, such as the one the Republican candidate Donald Trump made towards Mexican will only continue racism and
Jeff Sessions and his speech can be broken down to a sociological perspective with the elements of a moral panic. Sessions would a represent the Politico-Moral Entrepreneur element in a moral panic. He is a political figure with a lot of background knowledge of security. So when he speaks about undocumented immigrants committing these crimes, the audience will believe it. The "Linking behavior to a Dangerous element" element is also relevant Sessions links these crimes, drug trafficking, and sexual assaults to the undocumented population. Sessions state "Under the President's leadership and through his Executive Orders, we will secure this border and bring the full weight of both the immigration courts and federal criminal enforcement to combat
In the midst of one of the most controversial presidential elections in history, both political parties are struggling to prove that their candidate is the best choice. Clinton and Trump’s disapproval ratings are very low, but one has to ask, is there really a lesser evil to choose from? While Clinton has had her own fair share of past discrepancies, Trump’s track record proves much more troublesome. Donald Trump has proven to be an untrustworthy presidential candidate because of his misogynistic actions, his racial bias, and his corrupt business history. During the Republican debate on August 6, 2016, Trump had a falling out with Fox correspondent Megyn Kelly after she questioned him about some of his comments on women, where he referred to them as “’fat pigs’, ‘dogs’, ’slobs’, and ‘disgusting animals’,” (Bahadur).
In addition to hosting a reality TV show one of Donald Trump’s main successes was the founding of Trump Entertainment Resorts, a hotel and gaming enterprise. With a weak background in politics, it was shocking to millions when entrepreneur Donald Trump, announced his presidential candidacy for the 2016 election. Trump’s forward, harsh, and critical characteristics set him aside from any other candidate in American history. In this essay, the term demagoguery and the characteristics necessary required to be considered a demagogue will be defined and analyzed and related to the current debates of presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
Any immigrant who commits murder or other offense after coming to this country will be dismissed. Their legalization will never come. Most illegal immigrants who come to this country are asylum seekers. These immigrants seek refuge and peace in the United States. Nevertheless, some illegal immigrants come here for disastrous reasons. These immigrants come here to harm United States citizens. In an article by Breitbart called “Illegal Alien Accounts For Over 30% of Murders in Many States” it asserts, “Between 2008 and 2014, 40% of all murder convictions in Florida were criminal aliens. In New York, it was 34% and Arizona 17.8 %”(Tancredo). These immigrants who commit serious offenses like murder, do not deserve to be here. These immigrants will not receive the chance to become rightful
A second argument is that foreigners – both authorized and unauthorized alike – are apt to be deported in the case of their committing a violent crime, suggesting that the incarceration rates for immigrants may be artificially low as well. The data in Sampson’s research is designed to circumvent these issues by relying on testimony from neighborhood residents – both legal and illegal – rather than police statistics. Sampson concludes that “police arrest biases or undercounts can’t explain the fact that first generation immigrants self-report lower violence than the second generation, which in turn reports less than the third generation.” (2008). It would appear that President Trump’s “Bad Hombres” have very little basis in data.
He doesn't care what's politically correct and what's not. I think the fact he ran for president shows that he really just wants to help fix America after so many bad politicians messed it up. Yes some of the things he says are outrageous but you can't blame him. Look at his age, the way he grew up. The 60’s and 50’s were times when racism and sexism were problems. But back to the point... Trump wants to "make America great again". Although...If you’re still mad about his plan to build a wall.... Let me just says this. Look at your backyard. Many Americans have a fence in their backyard. Now let me ask you, what does that fence do? It keeps people out right? It keeps your yard YOUR YARD. You keep what you want in it. You put what you don't want out on the streets. Your backyard is where you feel safe because you know that this is yours. This is what trump wants to do. He wants to have America be something where we can all say it's like your
American Politics are known around the world for being one thing, and it’s for being complete shit. The politicians and political parties we bring into office who are supposed to influence and change government for the better don’t do anything to help us but instead make it worse. The American people don’t help much either with our constant attacks against our own government. American Politics are broken from these politicians caring more for themselves and political parties only caring for their own agenda, and the American public weakening the government. America, the once great country we live in used to be a strong and independent Nation.
Donald Trump’s presidential success has had many people wondering why someone voted for a man who doesn’t shy away from controversy, someone who undoubtedly subjects himself to a racist, misogynistic and xenophobic narrative and has no real political experience. Donald Trump has impressed and won the vote of mainly uneducated older white people, but he has also enticed the upper class, highly educated people, moderate and conservative Republicans, Independents and even some minorities. Why did they vote for Trump? Well, according to political scientists it is much easier to explain than you might have thought. This is known as authoritarianism, which allows us to gain a better understanding of the ideology behind a Trump supporter.
Trump states "There are territories and terror states and terror nations that we 're not going to allow the people to come into our country,” which proves his hatred towards Muslims. Trump also plans to build a wall on the southern border, which would separate America and Mexico and have the Mexicans pay for it. This is Trump’s way of saying that Mexicans are also banned from America. In an interview, Trump says “I don 't want people coming in from certain countries. I don 't want people coming in from the terror countries. You have terror countries! I don 't want them, unless they 're very, very strongly vetted." This shows his strong detest for people from terror countries. Trump has his own beliefs, but I personally think his demands and promises are foolish, and in the twenty first century, we should already be at the stage of equality where we allow everyone the right to immigrate.
