Cyrano De Bergerac is a famed drama written by Edmond Rostand. Rostand was a French poet and dramatist best known for the above-mentioned drama, which he penned in 1897. Cyrano De Bergerac is a romantic tragedy with main themes of love, honor, and self-sacrifice. The drama is a fictionalization of the life of the real Cyrano, a French playwright and duelist in the 17th century. Written in verse, Cyrano closely follows the classical Alexandrine form. The female protagonist is Roxane, Cyrano’s cousin. She is portrayed as beautiful, charismatic, and witty. Rostand allows her to play a role in the drama as more than a mindless love interest and gives her personality, despite her role being simply that of the love interest. #2 In Paris in 1640, Cyrano de Bergerac, a skilled poet and swordsman, is in love with his cousin Roxane but feels unable to confess his feelings due to his #QA enormous and impending nose. Christian is a handsome but ineloquent nobleman and cadet who is also in love with Roxane. Cryano gets involved in a duel and wins, impressing Roxane. She later #SV confesses her love for Christian to Cyrano. Cyrano agrees to protect him, and he also converses with Christian and chooses to help him court Roxane through love letters secretly created by Cyrano. Roxane and Christian decide to marry #’ly secretly. Roxane, still in mourning for Christian, wears his last love letter (actually written by Cyrano) in a necklace. She requests Cyrano read it to her, and as he takes his last breath she realizes he is the one she fell in love with. Cyrano De Bergerac is a play about love, loss, and honor, and the two protagonists are dynamic and interesting characters. Central to the plot of the drama is the love interest Roxane. Rostand depicts her as a multi-faceted character and throughout the drama her decisions and actions are based around love but are intelligent and #QA astute, though she is still only there to act as a love interest. Rostand describes Roxane as a beautiful and charming woman who catches the eye of many men, but he also dares to give her personality. She is witty and perceptive and she #SV constructs schemes and plans. She is given a voice, which is rare for female roles in older and even modern media. She even passes the Bechdel test by having a conversation with her Duena about something other than men (CITATION).
