In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by harper lee, Scout and Jem Finch are Atticus finch’s children. Atticus Finch is known throughout the town of Maycomb as an honest man and respected defender. Throughout the novel scout experiences things from the trial that help her see the truth in other individuals. One person that scout recognizes differently throughout the novel is Boo Radley. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, society has branded Boo Radley as an outcast and a freak, however Scout Finch reveals he is not.

For example, when Scout passes by on her way home from school she finds the first object Boo left for them, a shiny stick of bubble gum. “Two live oaks stood at the edge of the Radley lot; their roots reached out into the side-road and made it bumpy. Something about one of the trees attracted my attention. Some tinfoil was sticking in a knot-hole just above my eye level, hastily looked around once more, reached into the hole, and withdrew two pieces of chewing gum minus their outer wrappers” (44). Scout found the first items left in the tree on her own and threw them in her mouth before even talking to Jem about it. “‘Spit it out right now!’ I spat it out. The tang was fading, anyway. ‘I’ve been chewing it all afternoon and I ain’t dead yet, not even sick.’ Jem stamped his foot. ‘Don’t you know you’re not supposed to even touch the trees over there? You’ll get killed if you do!’” (45). When Jem found out about her finding the two pieces of gum in the Radley’s tree, he freaked out and told her not to go over there. Another example is when Boo continues to add personal items to the tree for Scout and Jem to find. “We were walking past our tree. In its knot-hole rested a ball of grey twine. ‘Don’t take it, Jem,’ I said. ‘This is somebody’s hiding’ place.’ ‘I don’t think so, scout’” (78). Boo Radley was adding …show more content…

In the novel Scout and Jem suspect that Boo Radley is a monster, they made up cruel games about him and made attempts to get him out of his house. Boo starts to leave gifts for Scout and Jem when their school year starts. He leaves all sorts of gifs such as chewing gum, grey twine, carved soap dolls, a medal, a watch, and pennies. The children did not realize the connection they had made with Boo, they start to realize he is kind and caring when he saves them from Bob Ewell’s murderess
