My Little Beowulf: Fighting is Magic
Beowulf and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic have many similarities. The main character of My Little Pony, Twilight Sparkle always thinks of others first, she also has a powerful weapon, the elements of harmony. Twilight Sparkle has the courage, and leadership skills to fight whoever comes her way. Beowulf likewise, is an excellent leader; he has strong capability’s that enable him to lead his solders, and defeat anything that comes in their way. Twilight and Beowulf are very similar for their values and beliefs.
Beowulf and Twilight Sparkle are surprisingly alike. Twilight Sparkle is born with immense power; so much power that when she gets the opportunity to showcase her powers so that she can get into a school, she has so much power that Princess Celestia notices and decides to take her under her wing. The most important thing to her is friendship and family. Twilight Sparkle harvests the element of magic, which is part of the elements of harmony, which is composed of all her friends. When they come together, they can be extremely powerful, and together nothing can stop them. Beowulf has a common set of values, in the end of the story when Beowulf is struggling to say his last words, "My days have gone as fate willed,... As I knew how, swearing no unholy oaths, seeking no lying wars. I can leave/This life happy; I can die, here, knowing the Lord of all." (2735-2743) He expresses his values by saying what matters is family, loyalty, glory and courage. Twilight and Beowulf both have courage and love for family in as common values. The similarities between Beowulf and Michael start with their fathers. Beowulf's father was a great warrior who had earned a reputation as being strong and courageous; however, Beowulf's father was killed and never saw his son do great things. All of these traits of Beowulf's father are similar to that of Michael's dad. Michael's father, James Jordan, was a great professional baseball player who had earned a reputation as a hustle player and a good lead off man. James was killed later in life, and was never able to see his son do great things. Just like Beowulf's father.
Beowulf and Gilgamesh are similar; they both experience a hero’s journey. Beowulf hears of Grendel and how he harasses Hrothgar’s kingdom. He returns to Hrothgar and shows that he has killed Grendel’s Mother. Beowulf then returns to the land of the Geats. In Beowulf, the essence left behind by a true hero is extremely important. In epics such as this one, leaders tend to have the determination and boldness of a hero. On the other hand, the main character, Beowulf, does not only display these certain traits. In this heroic poem, respect and trust come naturally. Honor and integrity are present throughout the poem. There are many moments in Beowulf that manifest the many traits that a person should have. This proves how important these attributes are to the characters and the Anglo-Saxon society. Although Beowulf has no known author, it embodies many of the beliefs and morals of the early Germanic society. The author of this epic poem uses many approaches in order to demonstrate that respect and trust are fundamental characteristics of a leader and hero.
All authors, who actually produce well written stories and novels, tend to have one thing in common: the way that they describe and characterize each character. The diction and tone that they incorporate into the work assists in producing characters with extreme qualities, both good and bad. Two such characters are known as Beowulf and Gilgamesh. These two beings possess similar qualities but are expressed by the author in extremely different tones and word diction. Gilgamesh has a slightly negative tone while Beowulf contains a vibrant tone. The two characters possess two characteristics that are quite similar: strength and confidence.
Beowulf displays his leadership skills in an abundance of particular ways. It takes mental strength and determination to develop leadership skills that Beowulf has. Throughout the text, Beowulf leads his people through various victory’s. To do this, he has to have the ability to lead his people with determination and strength. Dr. J. Michael Stitt has said, “the poem ultimately shows the importance of a leader that is adorned by his people.” This has abundant accuracy when talking about Beowulf. He went out of his way by his travels from Geatland to Denmark to resolve a conflict with Grendel’s common attacks. Beowulf did not anticipate his fight with Grendel’s mother, but when the time comes he is prepared to battle and defeats her. The battles are not limited to Grendel and his mother, but also include a fight with a mighty dragon. The older warrior, Beowulf, is now weaker than he once before but does not give up. His awesome leadership drives him to fight the dragon despite it being much harder than it once was. All three battles are reasons Beowulf is idolized and an inspirational, major character in the poem. The Movie Beowulf directed by Robert Zemeckis is an animated film which is an adaptation from the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf whose author is unknown. There are many differences between the film and Anglo-Saxon poem that include Beowulf’s characteristics, Grendel’s fight with Beowulf and how Grendel dies, Grendel’s mother and her fight with Beowulf, Hrothgar and his actions, Beowulf’s kingdom and the fight with the dragon. The Differences between Beowulf the poem and Beowulf the movie are very large.
Although Gawain and Beowulf share many similarities, their characters are almost complete opposites. Both aim for some sort of fame, one more than the other; differing in the way they attempt to achieve this success. Gawain remains true and looks to humility to guide him, whereas Beowulf is very prideful and selfish, loving nothing more than boasting about his virtues. Regardless, both go through tremendous changes throughout their quests, dealing with repercussions, and many challenging obstacles along the way.
Another similarity of course is violence. Violence is obviously present in Beowulf’s world. The determinant of status holds its roots in violence. The only way for a warrior to prove himself is through battle, or violence. Specifically this can be seen through the character, Unferth. He was not respected as a warrior due to his inability to win battles. He tried to find faults in Beowulf to raise his own ego. The disrespect given to this man was due to his unsuccessfulness in violent engagements.
In the stories of Beowulf and A Knight's Tale, there are many different themes. One of the major themes is the religion that runs through both of them, yet both stories have a very different view of religion. In Beowulf, it seems as if God has chosen where our life will end and where it will begin, everything happens by the will of God in a fair and just way. In The Knight's Tale, we see Greek gods playing with the characters and when they "play" with them, there is no real pattern to how they choose things. Each vies is different and this affects the stories in different ways.
In countless ways Beowulf and the Harry Potter series can correlate through specific themes, events, etc. In ways they contradict each other, and in some, they concur thoroughly. Throughout both the book and the series they have roughly the same central idea which is to vanquish the evil that remains in a fixed world and bring it into safety again. Each character has his individual weaknesses and powers, which are used to their advantage during the course of the story.
Beowulf is one of the most influential works in literature and there have been many different stories that pulls from the ideology, character traits, and the foundations of the story. The most popular author to have done this would have to be J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien who was a life-long Beowulf Scholar would go on to utilise major themes from the story, as well as most of Beowulf’s characteristics that made him an epic hero. An example of this would be the fight between Gandalf and the Balrog. In this fight, Gandalf and the Balrog fall into a deep subterranean lake. Gandalf details this fight to Gimli in the LOTR: The Two Towers, “Long time I fell,’ he said at last, slowly, as if thinking back with difficulty. ‘Long I fell, and he fell with me.
