So many people are drawn to popular people. Most popular people have many friends, and everyone wants to be friends with them. A popular person is someone who models something of importance and makes the path clear for everyone else. Atticus Finch is the most popular character in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee because he models being a friendly neighbor, a compassionate father, and an educated man. Atticus Finch models being a friendly neighbor in many ways. One way he models this is by helping Miss Maudie when her house burns down. This shows he is a friendly neighbor because he comforts Miss Maudie and helps by trying to save the furniture inside (92-95). Another way Atticus models being a friendly neighbor is when he tells Jem to go read to Mrs. Dubose. Atticus tells Jem he has to read because Jem cut off the tops of her camilla bushes. Jem does not want to go, but Atticus says he has to because it is the right thing to do (136-137). The final reason as to how Atticus shows that he is a friendly neighbor is when he decides to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus says, “I’m simply defending a Negro-his name’s Tom Robinson. One way that he shows that he is compassionate is when Jem, Dill, and Scout follow him to the jail. He is especially compassionate because if Scout had not come and talked to the Lynch mob, something bad could have happened to Atticus (204-205). Another way Atticus is compassionate is when he defends Tom Robinson. Even though Atticus knows he will be laughed at and called names he still defends Tom Robinson (100). Finally he has compassion for Mrs. Dubose. He is compassionate towards her because he knows she has a problem and is in her last few days. He says, “She has enough troubles of her own”(145).
