Researcher writers in today’s world need to be factual and knowledgeable on the writing topic. Reading “How I Came to Love the Veil” by Yvonne Ridley one can consider it a research essay but it is not true. Ridley’s essay is about how she got captured by the Taliban, and she needed to convert into Muslim or die. She did convert and her story is of people's action towards Muslim woman and her facts about what she see through her eyes. It sounds like a good essay but in truth is very opinionated. Yvonne Ridley’s “ How I Came to Love the Veil” is ruined by her credibility with her misinterpretation of opposers, over-generalizations, and fallacies that damage her ethos as a writer. The first way, Ridley ruined her credibility is with her misinterpretation. …show more content…
For example, Ridley states that she thought “ Veiled (Muslim) woman as quiet oppressed creatures (446).” Her misinterpretation is that all Muslim women are restrained and controlled. This is not true for all Muslim woman. Ridley’s also tells that all “Western excesses such as binge drinking, casual sex, and drug use (448).” The misinterpretation that all westerns are undisciplined and given to vice. Yes, maybe there is some westerns are like this, but not all of them are. Another way Ridley lose her credibility as a writer is when she insults the western male politicians and journalists by saying they have arrogance and ignorance (447). When Ridley say this she speaks or writes out emotion or according to attitude rather than a reason for arrogance and she does the same thing with ignorance but rather than knowledge. This is wrong of her because it is a biased statement to make. Ridley looses her ethos by not supporting her interpretation of her statements about westerns in general and western male politicians and journalists. Ridley’s use of overgeneralization disintegrates her credibility as a writer.
Over-generalization is attributing the same trait to a whole group of people without qualifications. In particular is that Ridley states that “ Women in Islam are considered equal to men in spiritual, education worth and a woman’s gift for childbirth and child-rearing is regarded as a positive attribute (447).” This is wrong because this is not true for all Islamic countries and American Muslims too. Similarly when Ridley also talks about what has a cabbie said “ Don’t leave a bomb in the back and asked, Where’s bin Laden hiding? (447)” This is very stereotypical and not all cabbie are like this, but she is judging that all cab drivers are like this. Especially when Ridley over-generalized all Christians from Reverend Pat Robertson statement “claim that Islam oppresses women (449).” This is not true at all because there maybe some people like this, but this does not mean all of them are like it. In religion, there are different grades of people and how extreme their beliefs are. Another example is how Ridley classified that all western male are obsessed with Muslim woman’s attire. There are plenty of guys around 18 years old to 25 years who old dose not care about women's clothes in any religion. One more example is that Ridley states that “Muslim feminists are more radical than their secular counterparts (447).” It is not right because she does not show proof of her statement. This really hurts
her credibility as a writer when she damages someone's religion, character, and profession. Good writers do not attack people's character but their ideas or beliefs with evidence. Finally, Ridley's use of ad hominem or fallacies also contradicts her credibility as a writer. Ad hominem fallacy or error in reasoning is attacking the person instead of his or her claims and argument; name calling is one type but mostly it is attacking the person’s motives or character. The biggest example is when Ridley states “most Western male politicians and journalists who lament the oppression of women in the Islamic world have no idea what they are talking about (447).” There is no claim or argument to see if she right in any way. She attacks the character of Western men. One other ad hominem is about Western men blame Islam “blame for veils, child brides, female circumcision, honor killings and forced marriage (447).” Again, there is no evidence about this in Ridley’s essay. All in all, Ridley loses her ethos throughout the essay with mischaracterizations of her critics, overgeneralizations and her fallacies damages her credibility as a writer. Ridley use of mischaracterizations is through the essay which damages her ethos. Ridley’s essay has a lot of overgeneralizations and it distracts from the content of the essay. She makes a lot claims about Western people, but do not back up it with evidence. This no way to write a paper, if she does not show proof and evidence for her work.
1) The story takes place in Pinedale, Florida. Where a HIV-positive Pinedale High School student named Alejandro Crusan or Alex for short, was attacked while in his car. A witness named Daria Bickell says that she was a student from the same school, name Clinton Cole at the crime scene.
Research is a systematic inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions and solve problems. The ultimate goal of research is to gain knowledge that would be useful to many people. The Tuskegee study was initially started to study the effects of untreated Syphilis for about six to nine months, followed by treatment phase which gained public interest and outcry from public which led to actions initiated by US federal. The knowledge and information gathered from the study was very small compared to the risk that the men and their family endured. The participants and the families got compensated after a lawsuit was filed, but the physical, emotional and mental damaged caused cannot be
One of the problems with this argument is that not everyone in society identifies with these stereotypes. If the audience does not find the characteristics to be true they could shut off thought, thereby defeating his purpose for writing the article. There are no statistics presented in this article. The lack of statistics or other evidence, such as results of surveys, could lead Mr. Leo’s audience to believe that these are his own perceptions. In the seventh paragraph, Leo makes references to Catholics, Asians, Republicans, and Africans.
The book Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Paul Brand & Philips Yancey gives a whole new meaning on what is studying biology. He starts by describing the very first time he saw a cell. He was amazed and from there on he learn how to be a biology student, while still having strong beliefs. He compares the human body as a community. Since each individual cell can live for itself. All cells come together to sustain the larger organism and properly function the way it should be.The analogy in 1 Corinthians 12, compares the human body to the church, where he states how god put each individual cell in its place for a reason. We all are made up of many cells but, we can not function if there are not together as a whole.
Castro “[has] learned not to back down” (Castro 269) in the face of a differing opinion; this is unlike many other writers. It is for this reason that Castro’s writing inspires me to resist the idea that the type of writing that belongs in “the academy” is not for others to necessarily see, but for the people fortunate enough to read it themselves. The power of words and information is universally essential in all its forms, and this type of communication is vital for any sort of improvement or awareness. The passage about Castro’s feminist professor who writes about the Violence Against Women Act is a perfect example of what Castro depicts as one of the downsides of “the academy.” The essay her professor writes could potentially “help protect thousands of women,” but instead it is categorized as an “academic journal” (Castro 266) and most likely will not be accessed by those in need. Lastly, Castro inspires me by emphasizing the need to broaden the origins of authors that are read and interpreted to those who were actually affected by heavy issues. Writing that belongs in “the academy” should be eye-opening and not full of common
The author Jeannette Walls of the Glass Castle uses the literary element of characterization to further the theme of the individual chapters. Walls, divides the novel into sections which signify different parts of her life. During one of the last sections in the later half of Jeannette Walls life she comes accross the character by the name of Ginnie Sue Pastor. Ginnie Sue is a single mother who works at The Green Lantern (a local brothel) in order to support her family. When Jeannette first comes across Ginnie Sue she thinks to herself, “It was only on the way home that I realized I hadn’t gotten answers to any of my questions. While I was sitting there talking to Ginnie Sue, I’d even forgotten she was a whore,” (Walls 163). Jeannette is referring to her question she had earlier anticipated on asking which related to her
This means that these women have less privileges than black males, because even though both of them share the same race, male as a gender is generally ranked higher than women. Similarly, black men have less privileges than white men, because the white race is ranked higher in society. These universalizing assumptions rely on the essentialist way of thinking, therefore blocking the fact that women’s lives are much more diverse, as each woman has different, multiple life experiences and personality traits. This idea of the power-dominated group of society is known to be rooted from the other oppressive structures such as Eurocentrism, heterosexism, transphobia, and ableism. For example, Eurocentrism is “a view that Europe is the centre of the world and “civilization”, and everything must be measured against this standard.” (56). This ideal standard is creating oppression towards members of society who are not necessarily white, male or heterosexual, thus, allowing inequality to take place and unearned privilege towards this group of “power-dominated” people. From children’s Disney movies, kids witness masculine and feminine stereotypes from a very young age. These reinforced stereotypes teach children how men and women should act, look and behave. For example, in the movie “Hercules”, a delicate and gentle princess finds love with the big, muscular, and ‘manly’ hero named Hercules. As these films describe that men are the complete opposites of
We all are categorized and labeled in some form of a stereotype. The sad truth is, the same stereotypes we may place upon others are placed on us as well by someone else based on their perception of some group of people. Now think of the young black robber in the movie played by Ludacris. On one hand, he keeps complaining that society discriminates against him by viewing him as dangerous and white people avoid contact with him. On the other hand, he pulled out his pistol and robbed the innocent white couple of their car, confirming any preconceived notions the couple already held. The Persian shopkeeper feels inferior to others and is always furious. We are always complaining about the unjust way others treat us, but we rarely think of changing ourselves. The movie shows that no matter what cultural background you are from everyone draws a conclusion about the
“The White Umbrella” by Gish Jen is a very reflective realistic fiction story of a chinese american girl’s youth. When the girl was young, her mother went to work without telling anyone. Her mom didn't even tell her father. The narrator and her sister just assumed normal life when their mother started coming home late. The story picks up one day when the two sisters are at their piano lesson. The older sister becomes envious when her piano teacher (Mrs.Crossman) applauds Eugenie (the girl whose lesson was before hers) on her playing. When the Eugenie leaves, the narrator notices that Eugenie has left her umbrella. Before she can react, Eugenie gets in her car and drives away. When the

Some hardly even apply to the particular group of people it claims to. It is true that how people are perceived has a big impact on how other individuals interact with them; however, people are not perceiving these groups correctly. Instead, the people are actually deceiving themselves into thinking that a certain group acts in a certain manner. This is done so that a group is able to fit a particular stereotype so that ironically, the people placing the stereotypes are not perceived in a certain way.... ... middle of paper ...
What is horror? Webster's Collegiate Dictionary gives the primary definition of horror as "a painful and intense fear, dread, or dismay." It stands to reason then that "horror fiction" is fiction that elicits those emotions in the reader. An example of a horror film is "The Shining", directed by Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick was a well-known director, producer, writer and cinematographer. His films comprised of unique, qualitative scenes that are still memorable but one iconic film in his collection of work is The Shining. Many would disagree and say that The Shining was not his best work and he could have done better yet, there are still those who would say otherwise. This film was not meant to be a “scary pop-up” terror film but instead, it turned into a spectacular psychological, horor film in which Kubrick deeply thought about each scene and every line.
Writing can be very frustrating; laying your ideas out on paper so that others can grasp the concept you are trying to convey is a very difficult task. In Writing 101 I have learned how to formulate good theses that are arguable and also how to validate articles that have to do with my topic. The most important element of a paper is the thesis statement. It captures the reader's attention and tells them what the essay is about. Having a well-structured thesis along with evidence to support that thesis are the main ingredients to a well-written essay. I have also learned how important it is to research an author’s background to ensure their credibility. This is a very important step in writing because today we can find information on a topic, however, it is not valid. By researching the author, we can see if he or she is an expert in the area and so this would make his or her information more credible. There is a ...
“We were witnessing nothing less than a war of Islamic fundamentalism against both secularism and modernism” , Lewis states that Islam is an oppressed religion and the lack of secularism caused many of the wars and conflicts with the West. This however is misleading because as he generalizes the whole religion, each religion has its own pleasing as well as its atrocious adherents. As he continues to generalize the Islamic religion as a whole and state that it is indeed oppressed, he seems to lack the information about how each individual may respond differently to other cultural traditions despite any religious aspects. Islam may be viewed to be an oppressed religion, but in fact, it supports freedom and one’s voice to be spoken and heard. For example, as Islam advises women to cover up with a hijab, it certainly does not mean that women have no rights and that they should be placed at home. Oppression defines power taken away from someone, while the hijab is an element of privatizing the woman, both which have no linkage whatsoever. In fact, Islam supports and praises women in many ways, the hijab is an approach to cover her up with no intentions of making a Muslim woman any less than a Western woman or any
One of the most discussed and debated conversation that has been done over research writing is that, whether apprentice scholars is allowed to use personal pronouns and emotional language in research writing. This can be really confusing when apprentice scholars writing research paper , because lots of people have a same doubt in their brain, sometimes the personal pronouns and emotional language in the report or in research writing is more making sense with the writing and seems necessary in essay. Apprentice scholars is the undergraduate who are fresh and going to discover academic writing. Sommers and Saltz (2004) deems that the process that cumulative experience from writing and sustained instruction the gaining of expertise that provide students more chance to participate the world of research writing, then they transfer from novices to later as experts. In my opinion, apprentice scholar should avoid to use the first person pronouns and emotional language in their research with high frequently. The following article will be discuss the reason that first pronoun and emotion are should be avoid to appear in research writing.
