Hamlet is a play that we have studied for centuries, people have watched, read and acted the scenes of Hamlet. The messages throughout the play have not changed throughout the years. Hamlet teaches new concepts and ideas everyday even though we have been studying it for centuries. In William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet has to contemplate many philosophy’s as he goes about seeking revenge for his father. The philosophies that resonate with me are that one person is not the centre of the universe, we can not determine who we will be in the future, never doubt oneself, and to always be true to yourself. We know and we can control who we are now. In grade 12 I have been so worried and focused on who I will become in the future. I often get caught up on the future as I need to choose which university I will attend and the appropriate program for me. I get so caught up in what will become of me that I forget to focus on the present, and who I currently am. This play reminds me that I do not know what the future holds. I can only plan the future to a certain extent and then I have to let the course of life continue. Ophelia understands this even through her madness; “Lord, we know what we are, but know not what we may be” (IV.v.43-44). This quotation is significant throughout the entire play as many characters forget that they do not have control over the future. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet knows who he is. He is heartbroken over his father’s death but content with going back to school, Then his whole world turns upside down. At that moment Hamlet never would of guessed that in the future he would be a murderer. Hamlet is a scholar, and could not have predicted that he would seek revenge on his uncle. I thought that this was a significant and meaningful quotation as in our lives today we are so caught up in what will become of us.
