There are many things in our lives that makes us great whether we chose to believe it or not, if you are rich or poor every single person has to be considered great in some way. The most famous and well respected people known in the world were named Great. Although there are so many ways one person can show greatness, what makes Jay Gatsby so Great? How can a criminal and an adulterer be so Great? Jay Gatsby is indeed, Great for the purpose of having such a strong devotion to Daisy Buchanan, He had the potential to make something of himself and he held the American Dream even when he could not reach it entirely.

Gatsby was making schedules throughout his childhood , as his idea of reaching his materialistic items as he got older. Due to having the feelings of not having any riches, growing up poor on a farm Jay Gatsby knew that he was going to be full of wealth, have the girl of his dream and overall, the American Dream. In the Novel, The Great Gatsby Nick tells the audience this “James Gatz – that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career – when he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior,” (Fitzgerald, 50) The changing of his name was significant in that Jay Gatsby was finally fulfilling his dream by changing his identity, which shows his potential to make something of himself, by hiding his past from society as well has his “businesses” whether it was moral or immoral. This as well Proves Gatsby is indeed Great, for he is open and willing to change his identity, hid his past for years from society with nobody really knowing the truth and mystery behind the name The Great Gatsby.
