In To Kill a Mockingbird, the Maycomb folk are prejudiced towards African-American people, even though they do not deserve it. Firstly, Mrs. Dubose uses racist comments to show how African-American folks are less than Caucasian folks, “Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” (Lee 105). Mrs. Dubose reveals her racist personality with derogatory and racist comments. These comments show the amount of prejudice and racism that is directed at anyone of colour, regardless of who they really are. Mrs. Dubose only looked at the race of who Atticus was defending, not how this boy acted in his everyday life. Even though coloured folk have been oppressed and treated like this for as long as we can remember, does not make it right. By being racist and leaning to a white man’s word over a black mans we stop ourselves from progressing and becoming better people. Tom Robinson was a kind and strong man, just like him there are many people with great talents that have been rejected merely because of their skin colour. People follow tradition and resist change because they fear the unknown. The unknown will only be bad unless you shift your perspective. When we change we adapt and move forward, but when we do not we neither move forward or backward . We all bleed the same colour, so we should all treat each other with respect. Furthermore, Miss Gates, a teacher at Scout’s school, tells her that people in America are not treated with hostility, however, Miss Gates goes on to discriminate a coloured man later, “Over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced.” (Lee 329). We see how Miss Gates, is hypocritical about what prejudice is.
