From the first use of stone tools to the creation of the iPhone, technology has influenced culture and vise versa as culture has helped spark advancements in technology. With that, both technology and culture go hand in hand and once one begins to change, so does the other. In our society, it just so happens that our techonology is so far advanced that pop culture is incorporated in almost every aspect of our lives. Our ideas, perspectives, and attitudes are very much influenced by what we see in our modern day media. But with this ever so rapid technological advancement, yes, in many ways has brought us together globally, but when taking deeper look we come to find the content of our pop culture has created corruption in the minds of …show more content…
For instance, continually we watch shows like, "The Kardashiandns" and "The Bachelor" as they whine and complain, constantly getting in trouble and digging themselves in ridiculous holes. Shows like these lack focus on the importance of intelligence and real world success and in turn, place emphasis on material things, sex appeal, and hard-partying. Without knowing it, society has been a victim of reality T.V and it has effected the way some teens and adults portray themselves. We also have the famous technological advancement, the cell phone. The ability to stream shows, text your friends, and get on social media all at the ease of your fingertips has been given to us but is not necessarily a good thing. Living in the 20th century, we are constantly preoccupied with our phones, counting our "likes" and making sure we have more "followers" than the next guy. We persistently feel the need to be in the loop, looking to our phones to keep us updated on all the lastest news. But in reality, there are hundreds of people that surround us everyday, hundreds of people that we could be physcially talking to face to face. There is almost a great sense of irony that we use the phone to connect with people but in the world outside our phones there is an extereme disconnection between people and
While there are many controversies of studying pop culture, in some cases, however, it can be very beneficial to learn from it. For instance, pop culture are in people’s daily lives, and it can have an effect on some people; pop culture “builds and strengthens interactions with people who are also into the same kind of things”(Ratha). Pop culture is a way for people to become connected with one another, and be able to make some sort of relationship with another person. By being able to make some sort relationship on the bases of pop culture,
American actress, Lisa Bonet, once said, “What saddens me is the corruption of youth and beauty, and the loss of soul, which is only replaced by money.” Today’s television shows are decaying into more polluted and inappropriate ideas, which are then presented worldwide. This is a negative influence on not only young people, but also society as a whole. How can it be expected of youth today to be appropriate role models to future generations with such corrupt influences? With the filth, dishonesty, and abuse of freedom of speech, reality television ultimately does more harm on today’s society than good.
Pop culture can be described as a wide range of mediums that are deemed acceptable and popular by society. Films, namely Walt Disney films being a clear example of a pop culture outlet that has a positive influence on society. In Adorno and Horkheimer’s critique of pop culture and society, they state that mass produced entertainment serves to shelter their broad audience to the harsh realities of their lives. That the culture industry offers a deceitful escape and a freedom from thinking. They further argue that mass produced entertainment suffers because it aims to please a broad audience. The critique states, “Every detail is so firmly stamped with sameness that nothing can appear which is not marked at birth, or does not meet with approval
As we look backon past cultures it reveals so much about the world, and the same will happen when we lookback on our culture today. We will be able to see how important certain things are to oursociety, and how it reflects who we are.In our fast-paced society, the news is constantly changing, and what is news today, could be irrelevant tomorrow. Popular culture includes the most current and ongoing aspects ofour lives. However, with the union of media into the technical world, people are brought closerand closer to the ever-present media. We are able to get the latest news at our finger tips. Thestories that were important years ago, don’t have the same level of importance today. However, I don’t think this means that we don’t appreciate culture. Not only does popularculture teach us about ourselves it also helps us learn about society. We are able to see howpopular culture reveals information about our culture, and what society believes is important. Itgives us truths about our own culture, time, era, and society and it can even offer reassuranceon life’s challenges, and help us figure out who we are. Like I mentioned before, the cultures ofthe past have helped shape our society and tells us about what it is like to live in this world, thesame as the popular culture of today also helps shapes us. Popular culture reveals our beliefs, values, and decisions. It can also have an impact on younger
As an amateur reporter for the school newspaper, I have had the opportunity to interview quite a variety of people on many different topics. One of my favorite questions to ask is, "What do you think has had the most influence on American culture?" Why do I like asking this particular question? The answer is simple: the variety and range of responses. While some answers are more interesting than others, I must say that I've learned quite a bit from all of them.
Technology is unavoidable in our modern lifestyle. You wake up, you use technology; you use technology while cooking, while eating, while driving. While you’re lying in bed before you fall asleep, you use technology, technology wakes you up in the morning. Is all the technology around you good for you, or is it harmful to your health? Was our society healthier or safer before all the advancements? So many questions and concerns about all of the technology we crave, but there are very few people who know the answers. Technology affects all parts of human life. It can create jobs, motivate people to get active, and assist people in learning, but this does not balance out that there are dangers that follow the use of technology.
The Effects of Popular Culture on Society Popular Culture is music, dance, theatre, film,T.V., poetry and Art which is enjoyed by a wide group of people. Some people would argue that popular culture in the 1960's cause harm. Other people however argued that other factors brought harm and change to society. Some people would argue that music would cause harm because of the lyrics in pop songs. Lyrics like 'Lets spend the night together' by The Rolling Stones, influenced young people to have casual sex.
Popular culture embodies the beliefs, ideas, perspectives, attitudes, and images of various cultures. Popular culture is heavily influenced by mass media, key celebrity figures, movies and related entertainment, as well as sports and news. However, in the past decade, the Internet and social media has come to be a significant influence on pop culture.
Technology has more negative effects on today’s society than positive. Due to technology in the past few decades Canine Shock Collars have been increasingly popular. Students in school pay more attention to texting than they do their classes. Violent addictive video games have made their way into American homes. Parents encourage their children to not text as much, but them to face the problem of constant communication. The Internet gives the students easier ways to cheat in school, and reinforces laziness. Internet Porn gives every bored male a chance to look at the seediest film in the comfort of his own home. Technology has taken the innocence and mystery away from the American family.
An article about childhood development makes a strong statement, “To make sense of the world around them, young adolescents, as learners, build upon their individual experiences and prior knowledge--They also tend to be inquisitive about adults and are often keen observers of adult behavior,” (Caskey). When we are born all we can do is observe to learn. Family, peers, even our pets teaches us so much and mold us to become complex adults. There has never been a doubt in my mind that I would be who I am today without my friends and my parents. We must be be careful choosing who is going to be our friends, since you will be molded by them, “The social environment is perhaps even more crucial for a young person 's future development,” (Csikszentmihalyi). The social environment for adolescents that is around them changes they way they think because we learn from others and what’s around us. Even the music we listen to can how we talk, because again, we learn from our surroundings. The younger we are, the more vulnerable we are to influences and can absorb and act on what we’ve learned from, media, friends etc., “Young adolescents are also socially and emotionally vulnerable due to influences of media,” (Csikszentmihalyi). Even shows like “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” “Real Housewives of Orange County,” ‘portray’ a real life, and children are perceiving that this is how you should and act in daily life. Could you imagine the next generation acting like the people on those reality shows? Clearly, everything that is out in the world, can have some impact on you or others, we are constantly learning from others and even the
Popular culture has given people the opportunity for people to have a chance to shine, and many have had their lives changed. For example, when American Idol had launched in 2002, the winner, Kelly Clarkson, had her chance to shine for the entire time she was competing and eventually won the competition. Her success provided her with the ability perform not only nationwide, but also worldwide. But how exactly does popular culture enable Filipino Americans to have a chance at success? In order to answer that question, one must look for the means which drive them to popular culture. Although Filipino Americans were involved in the community, nevertheless they chose to get involved in popular culture, which gives them success. Through popular
Pop culture is a reflection of social change, not a cause of social change” (John Podhoretz). It encompasses the advertisements we see on T.V, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, and it’s the reason Leonardo DiCaprio has not won an Oscar yet. It defines and dictates the desires and fears of the mainstream members of society and it is so ingrained into our lives that it has become as natural as breathing. Moreover, adults never even bat an eyelash at all the pop culture and advertising that surrounds them since it has become just another part of everyday life. Pop culture is still somewhat seen as entertainment enjoyed by the lower class members of society but pop culture standards change over time.
Culture has been a part of our society, and way of life, forever. It is almost impossible to come up with an idea that isn’t influenced by culture. As new technology is introduced into a society, the culture reacts in a positive or negative way and is thus changed forever. Despite the fact that we cannot really ignore that there are a number of ways in which technology negatively impacts our society, for the better part it has greatly helped to make lives better. It has also helped us a great deal to be able to save on many resources such as time and money and these are great benefits that cannot be ignored. It has also worked well in bringing unity into the world by turning it into a global village which has in turn helped people to more easily overcome their cultural, racial and continental barriers. Like we saw in the case of Ireland where technological advancements have shaped and molded the country into a completely new one that is better than the one it was before. Technology is made and used in such a variety of ways because many people who use the technology of today come from all walks of life and have different necessities, so to compensate for that technology must adapt to all different cultures. Consequently, as cultures change so does the technology they develop. Ultimately, advances in technology directly affect how cultures evolve, complex interactions are all the result of the dynamic and perpetual relationship between technology and
...h about technology and new media, I can totally say that it all depends solemnly on ourselves. How much time we put into it and how well we can manage our limits. Like anything else in life, moderation is the key. Technology has so many advantages when used properly, but when not used correctly can definitely turn against us. Furthermore, everything we do is a result of the media such as watching TV, reading the newspaper, surfing the internet just to mention a few. The media feeds us information and fundamentally tells us what is precise. It is the only one aspect which affects what we do in society, although it is an impressive aspect. Modern technologies can very well be a double-edged sword, from safety to connectedness. Once again, they do have their advantages, but as with many revolutionary inventions, they can radically change our lives, for better or worse.
The evolution of technology has changed society in both positive and negative ways. People all over the world use and benefit from modern technology. Technology has simplified the access to many tools people need in education, medicine, communication, transportation, etc. However, using it too often has its drawbacks as well. In most cases, the time of finishing projects is cut by more than half with the help of technology. Many people do not realize that technology has its negative affects society as well, and its rapid advances has changed life for worse in a number of different ways.
