Through his book “The Yellow Birds,” Kevin Powers immerses readers in the real and harsh feelings of war. He weaves his real-life war experiences into a haunting story that portrays the harsh realities of combat and its impact on the human mind. Kevin Powers uses metaphors and other literary techniques to show the psychological aspects of war that he experienced. "The truth of what I'd done welled up in my chest, and I wanted to vomit it out onto the ground like black oil." Powers uses imagery, such as the yellow light, to “describe the sickly atmosphere of war.” (GradeSaver). The color yellow reminds Bartle of the war and brings back the unpleasant memory of combat; however, the color green is the opposite; green to him, represents safety and hope. The green trees help him realize that he is finally home and will be okay. Powers uses imagery in many different ways to help convey the message and deepen the story. It provides the reader with an improved understanding of the book and a mental image of what's happening, which can make it much more serious. Being able to visualize parts of the book helps show the reality of death and destruction in war, which Kevin Powers experienced in his real life. Kevin Powers uses symbolism to represent his real-life experiences in the book Towards the beginning of the book, John Bartle introduces a character named Murph, “soldiers like me and Murph” (powers 4). Murph is a significant character throughout the book, but eventually dies. His death has a significant impact on John.
