The Kite Runner, a novel written by bestselling author Khaled Hosseini, teaches a lesson centered on the journey to redemption. Amir, a wealthy boy, and his poor best friend’s friendship ends due to issues caused by Amir’s paternal issues. He searches for constant validation and love, but never seems able to find it. The novel follows a guilt-ridden Amir, and what it takes him to find and earn the forgiveness necessary to absolve his pent up guilt. Amir’s mother Sofia dies during childbirth, leaving his father in a horrible mental state. These emotions and discontent only rise from his father, Baba’s immoral actions. Though Hassan did not even attempt to steal the watch, he admits to stealing it in order to protect Amir from getting in trouble with Baba. Not only does this show just how much Hassan loves Amir, but it also shows how Amir will do anything to put a stop to the attention Baba shows Hassan. Due to Hassan falsely admitting and the ensuing drama, he and his father decide to leave the Baba’s estate permanently. The horrendous actions Amir commits against Hassan leave him with immense guilt, especially the instance when he runs from the rape. Decades after Hassan leaves, a still guilt-ridden Amir receives a phone call from a former friend, which marks a new beginning. Amir receives a call from Rahim Kahn, a lifelong friend, telling Amir of his declining health. After hearing this news Amir decides to take a walk, on which he sees a father and son flying kites, reminding him of his home and all the memories from kite running. Amir greatly respects and trusts Rahim, seeing him as a father figure, so when Rahim Khan tells him he knows of the “Unspoken secret”(Hosseini 192) meaning him running from the rape, guilt once again fills his body as the person he looks up the most knows of his worst
