Human beings are extremely diverse and unique in many different ways, but sadly the world tends to discriminate against those who are different simply because they do not understand their culture. Whether we choose to believe it or not, cultural diversity has become a very important part of today's society especially in the medical field. One might ask, how diversity influences nursing practice of the 21st century. First, one must understand that cultural diversity is vital to humanity and is a group of individuals with shared common experiences that help them to better understand the world. different form us, we as a society can build relationships and begin to cooperate with one another to strengthen opportunity for growth as a nation. Culture can also help us relate to each other and decrease health disparities, allowing us to provide more personalized care through nursing practice. In the world of medicine, one must embrace values and views of others to better provide patients with quality and comprehensive care. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses are on the front lines of bridging the gap between the culture of medicine and the beliefs and practices that make up a person's unique background. We as nurse practitioners must have a firm understanding about what influences an individual's experience with an illness and how it is perceived. There is still a lot of progress to be made to successfully implement transculturally sensitive care. When nurse practitioners understand their patient's culture, customs, and religious beliefs, they can provide a positive healthcare experience that creates better healthcare outcomes and patient satisfaction.

The term culture is defined as “the thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups” (Potter & Perry, 2013). With the increase of culturally diverse populations in the United States, it is important for nurses to practice cultural competence. Cultural competence is the ability to acquire specific behaviors, skills, attitudes, and policies in a system that permits “effective work in a cross-cultural setting” (OMH, 2013). Being culturally competent is essential because nurses who acknowledges and respects a patient’s health beliefs and practices are more likely to have positive health outcomes (OMH, 2012). Every culture has certain views and attitudes concerning health. Providing culturally competent care is a vital responsibility of a nurse’s role in healthcare. “Culturally competent care means conveying acceptance of the patient’s health beliefs while sharing information, encouraging self-efficiency, and strengthening the patients coping resources” (Giddens, 2013). Competence is achieved through and ongoing process of understanding another culture and learning to accept and respect the differences.

We have learned that it is important to acknowledge our own cultural values and beliefs while also realizing that others around us have their own beliefs. Due to these cultural differences and lack of knowledge, disparities are increasing. This study provided a positive outcome when communication and cultural mutual understanding took place and patients had a more positive health outcome. As the nurse manager of an oncology unit, I often receive employee complaints. However, a recent confrontation has stuck my attention and after analyzing the situation many cultural conflicts seemed to present themselves. From the information I was given many of these complaints involve one of my nurses, Miryam, a 29-year-old Nigerian Muslim. Miryam is said to be slower than other nurses and takes too much time, as well as foisting her religion on to the patients she works with.
