Atticus was a fantastic book to read. Hansen did a spectacular job keeping the reader into the book with the use of imagery, syntax, and figurative language. Also, the story was good, Atticus was like a modern story about the Prodigal Son Parable. The book was interesting to read and enjoyable. However, the book was all over the place. It started off with Scott coming over and then Scott dying and then finding Scott and then Scott’s point of view of what caused him to fake his death. If the reader was not able to fully understand what was going on throughout each chapter, the reader would have been lost. The shift of point of view confuses the reader for a little bit but then it all starts to click. This book will have a lasting effect on me
Figurative language is in most well written novels. It helps develop the overall theme the author is trying to portray. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, I noticed Harper Lee distinctively used two types of figurative language. The first is symbolism, Lee used this twice during the novel with the mockingbird representing beauty innocence and Boo Radley representing the good in people. The second is motifs, Lee used this to emphasize the small town life in Maycomb, Alabama and helps give a better understanding of the people in the town.
Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published in the year of 1960, and is one of the few American classic novels awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The racism that is prevalent in many southern American towns in the 1930s is brought to life with profound imagery in To Kill a Mockingbird. There are several characters in the book, yet the true main character is the narrator's father, Atticus Finch. He is a man of great integrity and intelligence. A very heroic figure in more ways than one, Atticus possesses traits like being principled, determined, and, more importantly, he teaches others. When looking at To Kill a Mockingbird, one can see that Lee uses lots of description, dialogue, and actions to portray Atticus as a heroic individual.
Atticus Finch is another victim of prejudice in the novel. After accepting to defend Tom Robinson, the town doesn't treat Atticus as an equal. The people of Maycomb believe that Atticus should not present a proper defense for a black person. Atticus doesn't care for this because he believes in equal rights. Atticus does not believe in racism or prejudice. Many people believe that Atticus should not defend a black person in court. This is because many people in Maycomb think a black person is guilty before anything is announced. While Atticus is defending Tom, Atticus makes the jury think differently about Bob Ewell. A symbol in literature is an object that stands for a word, cause, belief, or another object. A metaphor is a figure of speech where a word of phrase is applied to something but it should not be taken literally. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the mockingbird symbolizes innocence. The mockingbird is innocent, singing for people to hear its music. In the book Atticus says to Scout, “Remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” When Scout asked Miss Maudie about it, Miss Maudie tells her, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy… but they sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Killing something so innocent would be a sin because it had never done anything to hurt you.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee vividly illustrates two sides of humans. These two sides are their dark side, as well as the highlights, and all that is good, and noble. Harper Lee uses a sort of diction to explain this very clearly. She also clearly uses motifs to her advantage to show this. In To Kill a Mockingbird, this is clearly shown time and time again.
"I'd rather you shoot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want , if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This is what Atticus Finch tells his children after they are given air-rifles for Christmas. Uniquely, the title of the classic novel by Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird, was taken from this passage. At first glance, one may wonder why Harper Lee decided to name her book after what seems to be a rather insignificant excerpt. After careful study, however, one begins to see that this is just another example of symbolism in the novel. Harper Lee uses symbolism rather extensively throughout this story, and much of it refers to the problems of racism in the South during the early twentieth century. Harper Lee's effective use of racial symbolism can be seen by studying various examples from the book. This includes the actions of the children, the racist whites, and the actions of Atticus Finch.
Harper Lee’s only book, To Kill a Mockingbird, is the stereotypical tale of childhood and innocence, yet it successfully incorporates mature themes, like the racism in the South at the time, to create a masterpiece of a work that has enraptured people’s minds and hearts for generations. According to esteemed novelist Wally Lamb, “It was the first time in my life that a book had sort of captured me. That was exciting; I didn’t realize that literature could do that” (111). Scout’s witty narration and brash actions make her the kind of heroine you can’t help but root for, and the events that take place in Maycomb County are small-scale versions of the dilemmas that face our world today. Mockingbird is a fantastically written novel that belongs on the shelves for classic literature that everyone should take the time to read and appreciate for their execution of style and the importance of their content.
The tone that was created by the author in paragraphs 10-12 was a sardonic tone. The lawyer informed the judge that he was late because he was planting bushels of corn in his field that he had just boiled. He was making fun of the innkeeper because he made the farmer aware, “ if those had hatched, I would have had ten chickens. They, too, would have laid eggs, and so on” (paragraph 3). The judge asks the lawyer if he really thinks that cooked corn will grow. He replied, “if scrambled eggs can turn into chicks, then why not” (paragraph 12). this shows how the author created the sardonic tone by the lawyer mocking the witless innkeeper.
In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch emphasizes his closing argument during the Tom Robinson trail using several rhetorical strategies. Atticus attempts to persuade the jury through the use of ethos, pathos, and, most importantly, logos.
“To begin with, this case should never have come to a trail. This case is simple as black and white” (Atticus Finch). In the story “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee a man named Atticus Finch a lawyer living in a small town of Maycomb, defends an African American named Tom Robinson from a crime he did not commit. Though the liable evidence Atticus shows to prove Tom Robinson is a innocent man, the jury still claims he is guilty for his crimes. Though Atticus attempts to prove his innocence and fails, he gives off a speech say how all mankind are the same no matter what race. Throughout Atticus’s ending argument he shows the rhetorical devices ethos, logos, and pathos to direct the jury mind to Tom Robinson as innocent and not guilty.
“My hair was black like my mother’s but basically a nest of cowlicks, and it worried me that I didn’t have a chin.” (36).
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus uses intelligent word choice in his closing argument to convey to the jury and judge to listen to him. He uses excellent word choice to make him sound brilliant and to make people trust him. Smith-Yackel writes in the story, “She persisted, as her subsequent reaction is something that all of us have known at one time or another,” (Lee 231) though this quote Atticus uses good word choice. The word choice of “subsequent” show of how Atticus used intelligent word choice and how he fills about the subject. Also in the quote Atticus used “persisted” to show how he trying to use certain words to try to get the judge or jurors attentions. Another time in the book Smith-Yackel writes, “
