Lies never really save anybody from trouble. In this case, Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” is a play following the Salem witch trials, and lies are used to sabotage. Causing havoc within the town. There are 3 big components within “The Crucible” where lies get people into more trouble than they were already in. For starters, Abigail and the girls were caught dancing in the woods, they lied, which started this whole devastation. Next, while in court Abigail runs in saying Goody Proctor had stabbed her with a needle she had for a poppet, which Goody Proctor’s maid, Mary Warren, had made. “I saw Sarah Good with the devil! I saw Goody Osbourne with the devil!” (pg 48) Once Abigail starts accusing women of being with the devil, the girls start joining in with her as they all shout names. This is where things turn and people start going into court, changing the lives of all the townspeople. Fear and worry bleed through the town. Trust is lost, as more women are accused of associating with the devil, even if it’s just by seeing him when you close your eyes. As everyone is worrying about their safety and who to stay away from, this gives more room for more lies. Continuing, Abigail framed Goody Proctor for “stabbing her with a needle” that was used for the poppet she had. “Stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly, he draws a needle out.” (pg 74) Abigail “roared” and weeped. Parris saved her and found a sewing needle on her stomach, which then turned heads to Goody Proctor. Though, after Hale and Cheever had made their way to the Proctor household, the poppet turned out to belong to Mary Warren.
